I was a devout William hater. In my opinion no one person can replace Layne. But, after seeing Alice In Chains at Buzzfest in Texas a few nights ago, I can now say that I love Alice In Chains with him in it. The new songs are great and he does the old ones justice. I could definitely feel the spirit of Layne in the venue. I even cried a little when they sang Rooster... Alice In Chains was and still is the reason I love music.
Layne died from a drug overdose. He injected a speedball and lay dead in his apartment for 2 weeks before being discovered by his mother, or so the story goes.
Layne is Layne. But AiC is AiC. I like it how that they got someone that sounds just like Layne to sing his songs, and William, imo, was the perfect choice. He is wonderful and people who say he sucks just because you think AiC shouldn't have reunited or that he sounds nothing like Layne can suck it.

This guy harmonizes well with them, I LOVE IT. The new album is fucking AWESOME! i prefer duvall over a drugged out Layne anyday. He would get so wasted he could barely talk. Layne will live forever, but sober in my eyes, not the addict he was!
No matter how wasted Layne was, he always hit the notes and put on a show.
Look at the Unplugges session, he looks really gaunt, but his voice is just amazing and his singing is effortless. Duvall does a reasonable job, but to say he is better than Layne is just ridiculous.

And if it's about the crowd enjoying AIC music, then do this.... get rid of the singer, and at every show, the audience is the vocalist. There's a revolutionary idea. They can do a live album and have the vocal credits go to Jerry and 10,000 other people.

I just read a comment that sean kinney made in an interview yesterday. He said the band name alice in chains is their name, and if anyone wants them to change it, they can fuck off. lol. I do agree. Alice in chains was diamond lie before layne staley joined the band with sean jerry and mike. they played for a while as diamond lie with layne until later changing their name to alice. So, the band has every right to continue on with their name being alice, since it was jerrys band originally..

you can argue that vedder, staley, and cobain are the singers who would be the most valuable to the band. But it has got to be the who's roger daltrey. There is a reason why love reign o'er is the best vocal performance in the history of rock. eddie vedder is a great singer with tremendous range and a real gritty sound. But even he cannot come close to daltrey on love reign o'er me but that is most likely impossible anyway

I was a devout William hater. In my opinion no one person can replace Layne. But, after seeing Alice In Chains at Buzzfest in Texas a few nights ago, I can now say that I love Alice In Chains with him in it. The new songs are great and he does the old ones justice. I could definitely feel the spirit of Layne in the venue. I even cried a little when they sang Rooster... Alice In Chains was and still is the reason I love music.

No matter how wasted Layne was, he always hit the notes and put on a show.
Look at the Unplugges session, he looks really gaunt, but his voice is just amazing and his singing is effortless. Duvall does a reasonable job, but to say he is better than Layne is just ridiculous.

well actually i think jerry was probably more of alice in chains with writing most of the lyrics and the songs, and duvall is a great representation of layne while still not being a layne copycat if you know what i mean. So i think they did a good thing by reuniting
