Waldo Stakes and Ken Mason test the Sonic Wind LR-11 bi propellant rocket engine which runs on pressure fed Aqueous Ethanol and liquid Oxygen for the New York Times at El Mirage dry lake California in 1989. The rocket engine makes 2,200 lbs. of thrust for a maximum of 22 seconds. Longest test done here was 17 seconds. This is enough to push the tine Sonic Wind ice racer to nearly 1,000 M.P.H.
