Incredible what American rail travel was at one time. Fast, clean, convenient. It's too bad that Eisenhower pushed for the Federal Highway Act, which resulted in our interstate system and the doom knell for passenger rail travel. It's good that we have Amtrak, but it's a tiny shadow of what we once had.
@ACLTony: You are right. And it was the A F of L, C I O that "somehow or other" managed to get the absolute exclusion of tractor trailer trucks from the Interstate Highway System lifted. The roads were not intended nor designed for truck traffic. That's why the entire infrastructure is falling apart. Corruption, that's it.
