:D I think the main reason why Devil Dogs became a derogatory term for so many people is because of the context in which it was normally used by superiors. Sadly, more Marines consider it a curse word than a term of endearment. I continue to use it and don't mind being called by it, however, I'm careful of how I say it and am not an 03.

I think any term used by a superior, in context with anything derogatory, would be considered a derogatory term at the moment. Think about it. Your platoon sergeant says, "What do you think you're doing Marine?" and you take it as he is not pleased, right? Well, that doesn't make the term 'Marine' a derogatory term. It's just used to get one's attention, and to remind them of who they are.

I say, harden the hell up. "Devil Dog" is part of our history, a celebrated part of our history. For *YOU* boots to come into my Corps and throw hissy fits and equate a part of our storied history with an insult--this is no exaggeration on my part, I was thrown insults because I apparently had the temerity to address infantry Marines, from whom I was seeking help, as Devil Dogs.

Read your history. Then live it, Devil Dogs.

They equate it, I'm told, with "boots", new to the Corps, and false motivation. Some even question the history behind the term of endearment, "Devil Dog."
