You can do it with Linux Backtrack using your standard laptop wireless adapter. In Linux you can throw your wireless adapter in promiscous mode without needing the special airpcap usb because Linux driver supports promisc without kernel protection crap in linux. All the commands need to manually entered to capture and anaylze IV's but this is old stuff. Try capture a WPA handshake and crack with Cain only it is a gaziilion years long.

@chiesarahah yea backtrack wireless does not work with on virtual machine, i had the same problem. So i have to just boot backtrack from live CD on my laptop if i wanna use wlan0

hey, for some reason when i go to the wireless tab, the only option is "active scan", and also it only shows the top half, not the bottom (MAC address etc... I downloaded directly from the oxid site. any help's greatly appreciated.

now i looked up the airpcap, and let me get this straight. its a thumb drive looking thing right? i just thought it was a plug-in. they want like 300.00 USD for this thing. is there a way with out spending a crap load of money?

u should really include the tools u used such as an expensive software and hardware to that isnt exactly common place. i was confused cause on my cain and able that window to the left dosent allow me to click on anything in it. if i buy the air p cap adapter and install the soft ware will that allow that window/boxs to the left be available.

It would have saved me alot of time if in the beginning you said this works with the winpcap adapter ONLY. I bought a Alfa adapter because everybody recommended that one

@TheSunraker To be fair, the video is titled "Cracking WEP Encryption with Cain and AirPCap". If you are interested in cracking WEP specifically with the Alfa adapter, you should check out my other videos which show you how to use it with Aircrack suite. The Alfa adapter is excellent at all kinds of wireless "activities", due to it being well supported by Linux. While Windows based applications such as Cain & Abel are very good at what they do, you will find Backtrack is far more versatile.

I'm assuming you are asking if this can be done privately ? The scans here are done in a passive manner, which means there is no interaction with the access point (Other than when packet inject starts) therefore it is possible to carry out the full operation without sending ARP requests, but this relies heavily on there being sufficient data flowing on the wireless network. Doing the entire attack passively means that it is COMPLETELY undetectable, as nothing is transmitted. It is slower however

Leaving a wireless access point with insufficient security on it, gives a potential hacker the "foothold" he /she needs to access your network as if they were physically connected. The danger with this is that they can do this from outwith your home or office infrastructure. Once inside your network, it is possible for someone to search for further vulnerabilities on network hosts, which could allow someone to list files stored on the network and potentially download them.

I'm not in a position to offer a "step-by-step" instruction to hack into someone's computer, as it varies from computer to computer. There is no definitive "silver bullet" that works with every machine as it were. It is better to develop skills in a wide variety of areas of network security, so that you build up your own skill set. My advice would be to study TCP/IP (know it inside out), get a good grasp of Linux, and use Backtrack. Backtrack is a great selection of tools in Linux.

The video was fantastic. The AirPcap is very costly. The Classic (no packet injection) runs around $200. The TX version is $300 (supports packet injection). The EX version (supports packet injection with external antenna) runs $500. I use the EX for developmental projects.

Thanks for your comment ! The AirPcap is a little pricey, but windows is a bit restricted on what can be used adapter-wise. I've done a tutorial now that shows WEP Cracking in Backtrack using Aircrack-ng.
