@henryporter101 Close. Let's say the structure (particularly the first verse) is borrowed from The Patriot Game, and yes, the whole song is, as you said, "note for note"....However, Dominic Behan, the composer of The Patriot Game, himself used (note for note) the melody of a traditional song titled "The Merry Month of May". More ironic is that Dylan learned it from Tom Clancy, one of the Clancy Brothers singers, not the Tom Clancy that wrote the book "The Patriot Game"
Thanks for your lovely version! You've helped me celebrate Bob's 70th 5-24-11!
I dedicate this to the Christians with " god on their side " who murdered the non-christians in the Inquistion, the Crusades, the Puritanical witch burnings, the genocide against the native americans , the nazi's {who were christians] and now all the christians [with " god on their side"] who are murdering muslims. AND I dedicate this to Harold Camping!!! :) insert my sarcasm & contempt
Good cover but only Dylan is able to accurately convey the message of it. His is so soaked with irony and sarcasm it's amazing he did that as a 23 year old. Everyone else accidently turns it into a real jovial and happy song.
God is on the side of the nation that follows his teachings and heeds his admonishments. America was founded on those tenets...has not always followed them. That is the nature of the fallen men who have power...in any nation.
Great singing and playing, but this isn't a religious song. It's an anti-war song. They say "God's on our side" in order to justify war. The idea is that God is not on the side of any nation. The millions of lives lost under the false idea we're doing God's work.
"If God's on our side, he'll stop the next war." Does anybody think God would approve of some of the atrocities our nation has committed in his name?
Usually I get pissed at people not flagging 'cover' however you redeemed yourself through having such a good cover.

Wow, I can't believe you don't have more thumbs up for that comment.
Exactly right, this song doesn't work if you sing without the sarcasm and contempt.
Thank 'God' I don't rely on YT for my Dylan experience :-)

Lew, this is a truly beautiful cover. You do Dylan and Joan Baez proud.
I hope that 2011 is a bright one for you and yours.

@Mysteryskatin I believe the lyric is "If God's on our side, Hell stop the next war."

@xthroatx Oh, yeah that would make more sense, lol. Haven't looked at the lyrics only listened to them, so I just assumed.
