for all who want to sing it; Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing: the last whose realm was fair and free between the Mountains and the Sea. His sword was long, his lance was keen, his shining helm afar was seen; the countless stars of heaven's field were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, and where he dwelleth none can say; for into darkness fell his star in Mordor where the shadows are.
The Siege of Barad-dûr lasted for seven years. The Alliance suffered heavy losses from missiles and fire cast from the tower, and Sauron also sent many sorties against the attackers. Anárion was killed by a stone cast from the tower, and his helm, a forerunner of the crown of Minas Anor, was destroyed.
It was eventually destroyed at the height of its military power due to the machinations of Sauron in the year 3319. The Dúnedain, survivors of the catastrophe, formed realms in exile in Middle-earth.
Sauron feared the kingdoms in exile, Arnor and Gondor and he attacked Gondor in S.A. 3429. Sauron took Minas Ithil in a sudden assault while Anárion managed to hold Osgiliath and halt Sauron's advance.
Sauron had contended with the Elves and the Men of Númenor for mastery of Middle-earth and the Rings of Power in the War of the Elves and Sauron. He was defeated and driven out of Eriador in the year 1701 of the Second Age. During this war the Elves suffered great losses. Over the next 1500 years, Sauron extended his power eastward and the kingdom of Númenor on the island of Andor flourished, even receiving the submission of Sauron.
Elrond describes the Last Alliance to Frodo Baggins, comparing it to the Host of Valinor that overthrew the Great Enemy Morgoth in the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age:
"I remember well the splendour of their banners ... It recalled to me the glory of the Elder Days and the hosts of Beleriand, so many great princes and captains were assembled. And yet not so many, nor so fair, as when Thangorodrim was broken, and the Elves deemed that evil was ended for ever, and it was not so."
The early history of Gil-galad is somewhat obscure, as Tolkien himself repeatedly changed his mind about who exactly Gil-galad was, and how to fit him into the already existing history of the First Age (see concept and creation, below). Gil-galad was certainly born in Beleriand at some point during the First Age.
Gil-galad was the last of the High Kings of the Noldor-in-Exile in Middle-earth. An Elf of the House of Finwë, he was named High King of the Noldor-in-Exile in Beleriand after the fall of Gondolin and the death of the previous High King, Turgon.
"Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing: The last whose realm was fair and free Between the mountains and the sea. His sword was long, his lance was keen. His shining helm afar was seen. The countless stars of heaven's field Were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, And where he dwelleth none can say. For into darkness fell his star; In Mordor, where the shadows are."
il-galad was the last High King of the Noldor in Middle-earth. In early texts, he was the son of Fingon the Valiant, son of Fingolfin, son of Finwë, first High King of the Noldor. Other sources and versions of the text however, indicate Gil-galad is the Son of Orodreth of the House of Finarfin. This would make him grandson of Angrod, the brother of Finrod Felagund and Galadriel. It is through this descent that his High-kingship of the Noldor is explained.
You people cant compare Gil-galad to Feanor...I mean cmon...are you serious? totally different kind of person. Gil-Galad is not a genius nor a criminal (silmarils + kinslaying any1?). Not underestimating him, but he is not anything Feanor was.
@julianhuan Gil-Galad is more like the line of Fingolfin -> Fingon, Turgon, Aredhel, (Argon in the later scripts) ... they're all valiant, goes in the family.
@Elainiwen What does bravery has to do with my comment lol...And Feanor IS valiant and brave. Valiant and brave enough to challenge the will of the Valar, bring an army to Beleriand to battle Angband forces, fighting outnumbered against several Balrogs, and more. Feanor is no less valiant than any of his (half)brethen. But he IS more vengeful and much more selfish.
@julianhuan Just wanted to strike up a convo really since you seem to be interested on this stuff. :) And yes Feanor is valiant as well, and as you said, like all the Finwions. But my personal favorite is the house of Finarfin. They knew how to fight as well, but they used wisdom as their main weapon.
@Elainiwen lol np man!....<3...My fav elf ever was Fingolfin. Dude has quite some guts for dueling Morgoth 1v1...even the orcs dare not to mock him after his defeat...
Gil-Galad was the last mightiest Elven King, leader of all the Noldors. He is the last of a long line of Elven Kings that stood against the darkness ever since Feanor and Fingon. Then the elves were few, some in Rivendel with Elrond and the rest in Lorien with Galadriel and Celeborn, what was left of the Noldors at least.
@bangbangmax1 He was, now just read up on your story and all arund it before you talk :) dont just read the 3 books, read all that Tolken have made before you talk :)
The Battle of Dagorlad lasted several months until the Alliance breached the Black Gate and laid seige to Barad-dur. The seige lasted seven years until Sauron enaged the forces personally at Orodruin. Here, Gil-galad and Elendil were both killed and Sauron was finally overthrown.
he was slain with elendil at delgorad field( the battle at the beginning of lotr film) ....where they fought sauron and deafeted him but not the ring....! Ive heard from somwhere that he went alone with a small army in mordor for unkown reason and he did never return but it seems Im wrong about that(I guess) XD
@sethengine when sauron's army was defeated he came out of his tower and challanged elendil and hil-galad to a duel, he won but then isildur...well thats the part everybody knows
He was with Elrond, Isildur, Elendil, etc at the Last Alliance battle against Sauron. Gil-Galad challenges Sauron to combat, and Sauron picks up Gil-Galad with his hands and sets him on fire.
what killed Gil-Galad? And when? You see him brieflt in the last alliance battle, he hacks an orc and than stabs it to finish it off and thats it, when does he die?

Did the film show Gil-galad's death? If not; then were did you get those pictures?

Yeah he was killed directly by Sauron. He gripped him by the throat and he just crumbled into a firey dust.

A record left by Isildur in Minas-Tirith implies that Sauron himself slew Gil-Galad, with the heat of his bare hands.
But LOVE the song adn story in it !! THX 5/5 !
