  • Great video I just bought a xdm .45 competition 5.25.This video will help me.

  • T&E gun? Please elaborate...

  • what do you mean one level of cleaning and two levels, would your second level be the same exact thing again or more detailed

  • You are very liberal with that oil :-0

  • Well done, Sir, as always. Your videos are consistently the most useful I have seen on YOUTUBE as relates to firearms.

  • That Ballistol spraying in slo-mo at the end is absolutely epic.

  • i love his dry sense of humor.

  • We need a shotgun cleaning video please.

  • Hi ! Do you know if there's a way I can get some Ballistol back in France ?

  • Do you take the slide apart like a Glock?

  • LOL! Came to the wrong cleaning/reloading table, buddy!! Nice work Hickock! You are loved

  • Hickok45, could it be possible that you can do a 22. Bolt action rifle cleaning or shooting video, I'm hopefully get a gun license soon and will obviously be new to shooting.

  • I learn so much from your videos. Now I need to get Balistol to help cleaning.

  • I think you should do shotgun cleaning next hickok.

  • i spray everything down with remoil or wd40. the great thing about wd40 is that it actually dispells water. if im going hunting in the rain, i give my shotgun a good spray. I have never used ballistol, but i'm sure its basically the same concept

  • @TheeMcDonger wd40 the penetrant ??? read the label :)

  • @SOULFLYSI yes wd40. it works wonders ive been using it for over 20 years.

  • Do you ever bother with copper solvents? I've found that in rifles at least that they help get a lot more of the residue out of the barrel.

  • Cool vid on cleaning. I am glad you did the XDM 5.25. The more I see the new 5.25 the more I want one....well may be a need one now. Great video!

  • can you please do a revolver one

  • @MrDD321 He already has a revolver cleaning video. Search for "revolver cleaning hickok45".

  • i thought of using plastic cloves like surgeons use just to keep finger prints of of gun and keep hands clean have'nt tried it yet tho

  • Thanks for this vid; I'm one of the people who requested it.

Seems like I've often heard only to push cleaning patches through a barrel in one direction, something like that. But hickok didn't think twice about scrubbing back and forth. I'm not doubting the master, of course, but am I missing something?

  • @WarmMachineME well if you could only go one way, how could you ever take the patch back out?

  • @Am4h8 Push it all the way through and out, then pull it back. One side of the patch wipes the barrel, then the other side on the way back out.

  • @WarmMachineME, Might be better, but I've done it this way for 40 years with no ill effects. Your results may vary. :-)

  • @WarmMachineME You aren't supposed to push the cleaning from front to back when the barrel is still in the weapon. If you remove the barrel it doesn't matter. The main reason you hear that, is to avoid pushing dirt and other trash in the firing pin area and what not.

  • "Cleaning is a little messy"

    Isn't that an oxymoron?

  • Comment removed

  • you can eat the traditional Ballistol i like the smell of it in the morning. it is good for black powder guns too. newly i use Ballistol "USTA " or Ballistol "gunex" but i still use the traditional ballistol for wood stocks.

  • Another great vid, Hickok! Even though I follow this method having watched your earlier Glock cleaning video(s) it's always good to have a refresher...repetition to engrave the process in your brain is always good. I really appreciate seeing the XDm in .45ACP. I have an XD (no m) subcompact in 9mm and enjoy seeing the new models. Thank you for turning me on to Ballistol early on before I spent years trying this that and the other thing.

  • i liked it better in the other place we could actually see the whole thing not that this is a bad video but that it was better in the older place

  • @lovinguns16, Liked WHAT better? What's the "older" place? :-)

  • @hickok45 the place that you talked about in the beggining of the video that you cleaned inside

  • I love the smell of Hoppe's too

  • Shooting guns is fun, cleaning them is not. Can you really eat the Ballistol? Did I hear you say Glocket science?

  • I've found an awesome way to clean my brushes. Just dip and swish the brushes in some Simple Green for a few seconds. Works so good its crazy.

Great vid man. Keep 'em comin.

  • I still prefer oil and vinegar on my salad, but I put Ballistol on just about everything else. ;-)

  • Hickock, just thought I should let you know, Hornady now has ammo made specifically for zombies. I'm sure it would help greatly on the compound using their Z-Max ammo in .45 acp with that little XD.

  • lol. Slo-mo Ballistol shot.

  • My Glock I didn't clean for 1000 rounds and it ran perfect, I think cleaning is over rated. lol

  • NICE VIDEO!!! I NOTICED THAT THIS XDM HAS A SINGLE SPRING (MY XD HAS THE CAPTIVE RECOIL SPRING) . DOES THAT MAKE IT DIFFERENT RECOIL WISE?

  • G96 - that's the stuff - sweetest smelling gun oil on the market - planning to get my wife some for Christmas to dab behind her ears!

  • Loved the slow mo at the end! Very informative video Hickok. Thanks.

  • I clean my pistols almost exactly the same way. Except I use CLP instead of Ballistol and I put some Hoppes lube on the shiny contact areas. Q-tips FTW!

  • Well done, but then again, your the expert and we always love watching anything you do with your firearms.

    Much appreciated!

  • @LordTimelord - WD-40 was "perfected" on it's 40th try. That's why there is a 40 in the name.

  • thanks for the tips!

  • I almost expected a slow motion portion after the main part of the video. :)

  • Hey Hickok I just wanted to say I love your work and appreciate your vids and advice your a scholar and a gentleman.

  • the first thing you've killed in a video was that yellow jacket, and you did it with a toothbrush. Thats a combo I didn't see coming.

  • lol.. "you can almost eat the balistol"

  • I would not buy any cleaner only based on smell. :o)

  • Hey Hickok, random question, and you've probably told us at a point in time, How tall are you?

  • @ccm21r32 i think he said 6 8

  • How dare you kill that yellow jacket! Seriously? He was not hurting anyone! Why would you kill him? That was the most brutal and abusive thing I have ever seen. I am calling for all of "Hickok Nation" to boycott your videos from now one, since he committed that awful crime! PETA will be notified and we will have a candlelight vigil to remember the life of that yellow jacket, who was cut down in his prime by you, you savage beast!

  • Will WD-40 Work??

  • @409na

WD-40's name is based off it's 'water displacement for 40 days' ability. I prefer to use real gun oil that will last far past 40 days.

Use any gun cleaner you want, and use any gun oil afterwards that you want. The all-in-one cleaner/oils work as well, but cost more.

I currently use Hoppes Copper Solvent to clean my guns (the copper solvent version works much better than the standard Hoppes Cleaner imho), and Militec-1 Lubricant. The rest I do just like Hickok does.

  • ballistol is excellent stuff, just needs some time to remove copper

  • i actually marinate my steaks in ballistol.

  • Anyboy else do a double take at 3:14???

  • So glad to have been introduced to Ballistol by your channel a few years back. It has worked wonders for me on everything from old wooden stocks to dried out moldy leather holsters and rifle slings. It's also my primary B-level cleaning solution now.

  • hickock67 here

  • The slow-mo on the CLP spray actually made me lol.

  • " You can almost eat the Ballistol." LOL!!

  • Another good vid i like your style this is the way i do it and you arent bashing other methods products etc. Love your vids

  • toothbrushes are the best gun cleaning tool ever. dip in ballistol and brush away, nothing cleans better.

  • Hey hickok45, where did you get that sprayer for the top of the ballistol? I love using the stuff, but have never seen the windex like sprayer on top of one of them. That could really come in handy.

  • @Iridium242, They come with the bottle you see it on. I use these more with black powder cleaning, but it's all the same stuff.

  • @hickok45 what do you think about using brake cleaner?

  • @Iridium242 My bottles did not come with them. They are standard spray bottle size. I used the top off a Fantastik bottle and shortened the straw to fit. I'm going to find a top with adjustable spray pattern.

  • @thetasig1284 Yeah... I saw the threads on the top of the bottle.. didn't think to try that.. I will, thanks!

  • I just changed over to Ballistol and I love it. I have a Mosin Nagant M38 with sticky bolt probems and tried everything and nothing. But once I used the Ballistol on it everything went butter smooth. For cleaning and lubing this is it. Thanks Hickok45!

  • Preferably Denatured alcohol???? I wasnt going to use my Jack or Glen supply to clean my guns...LMAO but serriously why doesnt anybody promote Breakfree any more???

  • Any thought on Break free CLP?

  • @jigsaw183

Break Free is a good product. Honestly, I have used a lot of different solvents/cleaners over the years and haven't noticed a great deal of difference among them. I am, however, an advocate of Gun Butter when it comes to lubrication.

  • @jigsaw183, I'm not an expert on all the various cleaners and lubes. I've used three or four over the years. Once I found something I could use for everything about 10 years ago, I just fell in love. :-)

  • @jigsaw183

Breakfree is best used for those who want a quick and easy combo clean/lube in a can and don't know how or don't want to spend much time working on and lubing their gun. Use a proper cleaner, a proper rust preventative, and a dedicated lube. Think of it like shampoo and conditioner, the combo stuff always sucks and it's better to use each individually.

  • @jigsaw183 Break free CLP works great and is safe for all finishes, it also protects well, for cleaning the barrel the Ballistol is better.

  • @semiautoriflelover1 I did notice the Break Free really gets my guns clean. I have heard the Ballistol smells bad but I want to try it.

  • What I do to refrain from taking to slide apart, completely for cleaning all inners is spray some type of automotive carb/ intake cleaner thru the pin channel. then get a can of air to spray the inners dry.

  • @HollowPointzz

The use of carb cleaners/brake cleaners is often mentioned, but some of those can damage synthetic elements. That is why I use Birchwood Casey's Gun Scrubber (note: NOT their Bore Scrubber), because it is safe on synthetics.

  • This video should have been called; "How to Clean a Croatian Glock"

    Oh I kid.

  • Great seeing that Ballistol there, hickok45! I'm never without that stuff!

  • hey, is wd40 an alternative for ballistol?

  • @barret740 No, but Ballistol's a great alternative to WD40!

  • @hovanti haha thanks :)

  • @barret740 It really IS good stuff; unlike some oils, Ballistol is actually harmless to (bare) wood and leather. It was developed many years ago in Europe for a soldier to be able to clean his rifle, protect the metal after cleaning, and could be used to preserve the leather sling. It also mixes with water, which is good for cleaning blackpowder guns.

  • @barret740, Not really at all.

  • Who the F is Harry Jones Hickock?

  • Only thing I would suggest: Wipe the gun down first with a paper towel. I use the blue shop towels. Get as much gunk off as you can first before you start spraying otherwise you just make black mud that seeps into all the nooks and is harder to remove. Just my two cents.

  • @satorres82, Good point, but I'd rather clean the nooks and crannies than mar the finish. I'd rather not start rubbing on the gun, particularly the outside finish, until it HAS been soaked. I'm going to clean out the nooks anyway.

  • Sounds like you need to go blue jay and crow hunting at the range!

  • I use Ballistol too.It works well, and is non-toxic, but it smells like DEAD THINGS! DEAD THINGS Mikey!

  • @BeagleBro, The only consolation I can offer is that after 10 years of using it, I actually like the smell. It doesn't smell bad to me at all, seriously. That might just mean I'm sick or something, but it really does smell fine to me. Maybe it's because I'm never smelling any other gun lubes or cleaners - don't know.

  • @hickok45 Hoppes smells really good

  • @hickok45 I agree. I hear people complain about the smell of Ballistol and Hoppes but I actually think they both smell quite pleasant.

  • @hickok45 I do eat Ballistol. I love the smell of it in the morning.

  • @BeagleBro It's an acquired smell. It smells like black licorice to me.

  • @MadDogXDM Smells more like the black death to me! :)

  • Hickok, what's your opinion on ultrsonic cleaners?

  • i miss my XDM :(

  • jeeez..you still have a lot of leaves still on the trees for Nov 22. We are just about bare up here in Mass.

  • Hey hickok, don't know if you'll read this or not and i'll probably send you a message to but i've been thinkin' of becoming a firearms instructor and i just wanted to know if you could tell what it takes to become one. Thanks for all the videos too!

  • what kind of cleaning rod is that?

  • you can make anything look fun and educational! you could post a vid of watching paint dry and ill still watch it

  • Do you ever scrub the bore with a copper brush? I do with mine because that's how I was shown, but I've often wondered if it hastens barrel wear. Suppose it depends how hard you scrub.

  • @Dalwhinnie15

Copper is softer than steel, scrub away (as hard as you want) it won' t hurt the barrel.

  • @TatendaZim Thanks!

  • I love the slow motion recap at the end. I laughed out loud.

  • An old trick (from Bill Wilson) for cleaning the frame rails, is to get one of those gun cleaning brushes (looks like a large toothbrush) with the square hole in the end of the handle. Cut off the end of the handle and the bottom "rib". Leaving the top "rib" protruding from the end of the handle. Once you have done your basic cleaning of the slide rails, then take a patch (with solvent) and place over the "rib" of the brush and this should be a good fit in the frame rails.

  • what does t&e mean

  • @RagingOatmeal Test and Evaluation

  • Good vid. One thing I do, is use Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber to clean the striker channel. (Gun Scrubber is residue free). I have had both an XD and Glock FTF because of gummed up striker channels (but I shoot a lot). I usually do a complete disassembly/cleaning of the striker assembly every 6 months, but between I spray the striker channel (through the striker hole and then the back of the striker) with the Gun Scrubber.

  • Hickok, I just hope someday they can make Ballistol smell like apple pie instead of dirty socks.......:^)....I love the stuff

  • love the Romeo Y Juiieta cigar box

  • Comment removed

  • Why you killed the bug? @:

  • @olverafernando He didn't, it flew away.

  • LOL Are you the Bob Ross of gun cleaning???

  • I think it's neat when we get watch the cleaning. Right now I would like to wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

  • i use rem-oil any opinions

  • Thanks. It's always interesting to get different viewpoints on how folks clean their guns.

  • you can eat ballistol... an old hunter told me he used it to get rid of hangover- sickness and to tread little wounds..

  • Mmmm...moosemilk sounds delicious. When you do your level A cleanings do you ever use a bronze bore brush or do you just stick with the patches?

  • I've heard of people putting their pistols in the dish washer and then lubing it when done....Have you ever done that?

  • Hickok did not shave.

  • great video. i love the slow-mo spray at the end--hilarious!

  • Thanks for making a cleaning/maintenance video. These are important but unfortunately not as common.

  • “You came to the wrong shooting table buddy.”

    Hickok45 kills a bee... like a boss.

  • Well thats not how I do it....haha

  • Hmmmm....what does ballistol taste like? ;)

  • pretty much the same thing I do. Good info vid Hickok. JKW.

  • cleaning bolt action rifles is alot easier haha.

  • Nice slow motion. LOLOLOL

  • Ballistol is great..... too bad it smells so bad!

  • @VFRSTREETFIGHTER, Give it 10 or 12 years; you'll actually grow to like it. I like the smell now; that's how sick I am! :-)

  • @hickok45 Hahahaha! So many age jokes i WON'T make. Keep the GREAT videos come, sir.

  • @hickok45 I love the smell of the one I use. It smells like eggnog to me.

  • So is Ballistol a ln oil or a solvent?

  • Who's Harry Jones?

  • Haha I was wondering if Big John was gonna do some type of slow mo at the end

  • Do you not use nitro solvent?

  • When I do an A level cleaning for my Glock I detail strip the frame and wash it in the sink. lol

  • sir, do you clean your mags?

  • hey! dont kill the bee!

  • Would like to see you do an AR cleaning video, including taking apart the bolt carrier.

  • I have a bottle of Ballistol and I find the odor to be rather nasty. So, I just keep using my Breakfree CLP. If I had a shed or separate building to clean my guns, I would use it, but I have to do it in the house. Momma don't like the funk. :(

  • Rust is caused from the acid in your sweat, air, and oxygen

  • Will alcohol rust on ur gun ??

  • " Oral B, clean your gun like a dentist."

  • That Was 1 Dirty Barrel lol

  • I'm sure you've heard it before but, with as many guns as you shoot, you may want to consider getting a Sonic Cleaner. Could save you a bunch of time. I use the Hornady Magnum Sonic Cleaner, works great with the gun cleaner additive. Also, if you're OCD like me about clean brass, you can clean you brass as well (with the brass cleaning additive of course). Been watching your videos and listening to your radio shows for quite awhile, keep up the great work!

  • I myself like eezox.

  • LMAO, I use the exact same Oral B tooth brushes to clean my gun! Same colors too!

  • Hickok, have you tried CLP? CLP is supposedly better for rust prevention. I also like how I can pick it up when I'm grocery shopping at walmart.

    Great video!

  • @nebulabass, Every lube / cleaner is supposed to be better than every other lube. As always, I just share what has worked very well for me and what I like. I have a decade of successful experience with this stuff in all my guns, so I'm not likely to be switching around anytime soon. :-)

  • @hickok45 Thanks for the reply. I would probably try Ballistol if I could get it at walmart or other local stores.

Keep up the great work that you do on youtube!

  • @nebulabass clp is used by the military, therefore it is cheap and crap."contract goes to the lowest bidder"

  • @jdymes101 Yeah....right. I'm sure all the products the military use are cheap crap. C'mon, let's try to be positive on hickok45's channel.

  • Hey hickock do you like the XDm 45 5.25. I like your videos man

  • you clean just like I do. almost mimicked to the T my cleaning habits for my glock 27.

  • I'm so glad you posted this video. After seeing the last vid on the XDM, I was considering purchasing one and I was curious about how easy it would be to clean. Thanks for showing us!

  • you are a fine example as to why the russians didnt invade us

  • Yellow Jacket's love the smell of Ballistol

  • Hickok45 not sure if you have heard about it but I think you would love Froglube even better cleaner then ballistol. Just thought I would give you a heads up.

  • Comment removed

  • im cleaning it XD.. lol XD

  • lol at the end you just had to put that long range shot with you can

  • Right on!
