The latest news on Apple they have purchase more adjoining land and the new solar farm is rumored to be merely 5 acres dedicated to solar and the rest is rumored to be a training center integral to their I-cloud strategy. The location may eventually be much more than anyone ever imagined.
Piss on Apple! Love to PC, Android and regular-ordinary simple mp3's.
Why would someone get such a fkt up idea to remove the old plug-n-play mp3's, and Androids, so much cheaper with android, almost half the android-market is free to download to your cellphone while you have to pay for both an iPhone AND the damn apps. WTF !!?!
And what about Mac's.. Can you even upgrade a Mac computer with a new motherboard (remember that half-globe -looking iMac) ? How the hell do the apple-heads think? >,<
@PunkBuzter i can easily swap out a motherboard on my Mac Pro and put in 4 hdds and up to 32 gigs of RAM. it's all extremely easily, actually. where'd you get this idea? you're living 15 years in the past, bro.
@PunkBuzter Even if Apple products are expensive, it's WORTH IT and come on, it's powerful. The iPod, iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pros, etc. They're all great products and not boring. You can do a lot with this products.
PS:
NOT ALL APPS HAVE A PRICE! A LOT OF THEM ARE FREE! And take note, FREE APPS EARN MORE MONEY THAN PAID APPS! So a lot of developers still want to upload their apps as FREE and NOT PAID.
Apple has practically abandoned OS X as a server, which is a shame I think there is some promise in it for specific applications but I think for them to be successful with it they would have to at least allow the specific things they do with it to run on linux or freebsd or allow some variant of OSX on commodity hardware.
They would need a million times more panels than you could even get on the roof to power that joint. That building is sucking down more juice than Lindsay Lohan at an open Bar.... Combine that with what Duke Energy is paying for solar right now in this region...peanuts...It is almost not even worth doing solar
They need all that space to store the money they make off of the lemmings that buy their overpriced computers.
cloud is a step backwards in computing, why would you want someone else to store your personal information? Caterpillar let the chinese do that and now the US is flooded with Komatsu tractors that are amazingly identical to Caterpillar tractors. not a smart move.
I see your logic. Just because something has never happened before, means it can never happen. There is a first time for everything. Just ask the towns recently hit by tornados for the first time ever. Your ignorant comment sounds like you are about 12 years old, and a bit on the crazy side. Take your ritalin today?
When this development is completed it will be massive not only in size but also in Scope - This thing is so massive and expensive - Word is some of the contractors had to live on site...Apple will soon be netting $50 Billion per year from here...
Not bad when you consider that as of Janurary 1st this year, all that was there was the nearside half of the building, minus the section down the left side and the exterior work in the right side. and most of the was a shell waiting for work inside.
As of today, the building is about 50% truned over to Apple and approx 80 % complete.
(I have just finished working there and yes, it is impressive inside as well)
maybe it has something to do with the military seen visiting apple HQ...and the new itunes agreement that apple can release your physical location to anyone...
I don't really understand all the excitment , They are claiming to employ 50 people. This place is practically in my back yard and this area has been economically devastated, 50 jobs will not help very much!
@mrstevesigmon its 'exciting' because this data house is 'as big as they come' equivalent to Google's data houses, it may mean, that Apple (as secretive as they are) is going to create something spectacular for the computing industry, or just a over blown upgrade for its services at this moment.
Some speculate free MobileMe for all iPhone users, (i doubt), most think its for iTunes, App Store, iBook Store, etc.
@egn93 It may be very exciting but that is not what I was getting at. This is more directed at the Gov. but Apple was given huge tax breaks and incentives to come here to create jobs. 50 jobs. Most I bet will not come the local area. I have read articles and blogs claiming that they will be the savuor of this area, I just don't see it.Apple makes very nice products but something larger and less techy would have more suited to our situation.Hope I'm wrong!
@mrstevesigmon No tech company can save a mining/factory town. Plus, I'm sorry but they aren't meant too. There isn't a rule that says they have to help revitalize that town to it's former glory days. Free market economy man. Like you said though, something larger and less techy. Lets hope for the best for that town.
@mrstevesigmon I am working there right now as a construction worker and it has kept me and 1000 people working for a year now. They have been very secretive about everything and security is outrageous at this point. This is not a billion dollar building its a billion dollar project that is not close to being done.
@mrstevesigmon depends on how much they are making and it can. because if this is in a small town what it sounds like it is it will bring in more money for the small business owners thier and bring in more money to the town. now im not saying it will make it so that everyone is making 80k a year now tho. but it could make it so the people of this town are able to pay thier bill and have a christmas for their families. You have to think about what else can come from them jobs.
does this mean if a bomb was dropped there would be a lot of things (data) missing??? :( i don't feel so safe about my stuff on MobileMe anymore anymore..
@suckcari Rumor has it, that Apple will offer MobileMe service for free. So I presume to accomodate a shit load of accounts, Apple will use this data center for this.
There is something very special now!!.. Apple INC. Apple also just bought 70+ acres across the street from the new data center with plans for a high rise office building and........???????
What makes this location Nice to Apple is how They can Tie the entire Data center to Super Nap not to far away in Charlotte. The closest your data center is to one of these Super NAPs or Network access point, the better, But theres nothing special about this land.
This little town will never be the same now that Apple has put down roots there. The future for Maiden NC is very bright. Wish I had bought some land before they announced the project, I am sure there are lots of happy farmers now the land they own is GOLD
wait, you mean cloud computing doesn't actually mean all the data is flying around in the clouds? Its still in computers?! Way to ruin my plan to take an airplane and steal tons of music, movies and photos from unsuspecting users!
It could be for MobileMe or it could be for the iTunes Store as well. With the iPad release just around the corner, I'm guessing it's to store the hordes of new apps that will surely be coming out.
Any reason why they picked Maiden, NC? Seems in the middle of nowhere, but is there some major internet routing through that area, being so close to big city Charlotte? I'm in NC and even had to look it up to see what area it's in.
@originalrecipes - Microsoft definitely has 100x the bugs and security holes that any Apple OS. Scratch that, 100x is a low ball estimate. You should go download the latest service pack, get some more memory to run that beloved (vomits) Office Suite, and spend more of your hard earned dollars on Microsoft's next crappy operating system.
Wow. I'm surprised this isn't a no-fly zone. I was expecting to see a half-dozen iSAM missles fired at them at the end there. I guess you guys lucked- this time.
Because its an Apple facility. If you can't fly a helicopter around the pentagon, then you surely should not be allowed to fly one around an Apple facility.

Relatively cheap land.
Relatively cheap electricity.
Ample available workers.

Actually as of today, Microsoft is worth 255 Billion and Apple, 180 Billion. Would you like to change your story?
When this data center opens, iTunes Store, the App Store, and iBook Store are moving in, to join Mobile Me.
Microsoft's Marketplace will be puny by comparison, so they better get busy and sell a lot more Windows and Office software.
