Rich Hall (on QI this week) found out - Total world gold = 2 Olympic swimming pools worth

(Max = Rich Hall + too much coffee)

Gold just sits in vaults - hasn't been used for anything useful for decades

If gold is not used to back currency (which it isn't) it is worthless - even Olympic gold medals aren't made from gold

If gold is worthless as you say, then why would central banks hoard it? Many of the major central banks (china, russia, india) are net buyers and reducing their dollar holdings. you forget that gold is just another form of currency that humankind has been using for 6k+yrs. It is financial insurance and is traded like usd into euros or whatever.
