Some of the locations in this film were Thunder Bay, Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Big Trout Lake. It was the first time this region of Ontario had been featured so extensively in a film. It was also the first film shot entirely in full frame IMAX. It's ironic (but typically Canadian) that many of the people in Northwestern Ontario remain unaware of the role they played in the historic beginnings of a great Canadian cinematic invention.
Amazing that a government could make a film like this. Those were heady days, with youth in control. It couldn't last, but we can remember, thanks to Youtube.
I am glad I found this on You Tube, My father was the pilot who flew the low aircraft footage in a Piper Aztek, with the camera mounted in the nose bagage compartment.
don't know if anyone responded to this already, but, the song is called (Obijawa Country) and the best part is you can get it for free off Bill Houston's site ;).
Brings back fond memories. I was probably 5 when I saw it at Ontario Place in Toronto, back in the mid 70s. I remember the roller coaster scene, and I believe we bought a song from the soundtrack at the gift shop. Thanks for posting this, I had been looking for it recently.
@rgteddie There was a roller coaster in the film Catch The Sun. That film also had Stompin Tom Connors. The film's theme track played towards the end and was about 4 minutes, showing lots of images of flying over frozen lakes and land.
They played North of Superior and Catch The Sun recently at the Cinesphere, and they looked incredible. I don't remember seeing them as a kid. But they look like they've taken care to remaster both the video and stereo audio. No DVDs of these Gov of Ont films
This is a fantastic movie. Unfortunately, you don't get the full effect in small format but you do get a sense of the incredible beauty of Superior country. In IMAX the effect is overwhelming - especially of the forest fire and the scenes taken from the aircraft.
