@gasol777 O.O doesn't sound like SA either to me. Let's just say it sounds like Seventh Wonder. But you're right about it being great and you've got some goooood taste in music so rock on man. Cheers!
The thing about Dream Theater is that they are now focusing more on Metal than on Progressive. They are one of my favorite bands, and I guess I like them because they usually change their sound from album to album, whereas some bands tend to write similar sounding material most of the time.
Oh, and I just recently discovered Seventh Wonder, and they totally kick ass :)
I love SW & CM cause they're doing more stronger music than DT's recent material, which is sad cause DT is my favorite band of all time but I haven't enjoyed their last 3 albums
@CavemanJesus4Life i loved octavarium, systematic chaos had 2 good songs on it (in the presence of enemies and ministry of lost souls), and black clouds was not very good except the best of times. hopefully mangini can help to fix that
@ColFang Symphony x? Shadow Gallery? Ark? Sieges Even? Come on! Seventh Wonder is absolutely awesome but certainly are not the only good prog metal around.
@QingLong90 CM & Riverside are totaly different, whereas SW & CM are very similar. Riverside is between Prog Rock and Prog Metal, SW & CM are way more technical and melodic/epic in my opinion.
looking for prog bands ive just found this. Allready heard Circus Maximus and Redemption, and am really looking forward to hear more of this band, specially cause of the singers voice, really diferent to the bands i just mentioned and way diferent to LaBrie. BTW i love DT and love LaBrie, even though i know hes not the same he was, but i still love him. Watch DT twice in south america and he still sounds great.
@thechainzter If you love a great Prog metal voice, check out Vanden Plas again. Doesn't get much better than Andy Kuntz
You may also want to look up Threshold, Kamelot, Ayreon, Lydian Sea, Spheric Universe Experience, Andromeda, A.C.T. (more prog rock than metal). Royal Hunt, Riverside, Porcupine Tree and a slew more
Great band!! and DT also is Great band. I'm influenced be DT mostly!! I'm a pianist and play keyboard... actually, I've been listening to this album about 2 weeks ago, and almost I can play every keyboard track in this album.
but I've been listening to dream theater more than 5 years, and still there are some stuffs which are hard to play!! by jordan rudess!!
Seventh Wonder are more melodic and catchy, yet only a tiny bit less "proggy" than Dream Theater. For my personal taste that's the perfect balance. And let's not forget the singer's performance who really excels - quite a contrast to Dream Theater having only a mediocre singer which should have been replaced for ages.
I can already anticipate the haters comments haha. :-)
its justified to compare this to dream theater, "mercy falls" was definetely inspired by DT's concept album "Metropolis Pt.2", there are many parallels ..
yeah, guys sat down and thought "how the fuck are we going to make this music so people can compare us to DT...let's use MPt. 2 so we get some degree of credibility"! Hello! Give me a break. One truth about prog bands is that they all try to be as different from one another as possible. And I'm sure they get sick to their stomach when they read comments like yours; every prog band is compared to DT these days- does that make you look better in eyes of other fans? I doubt it - it's a false cliche
its simply so that everything you do is an inspiration of what you have seen and experianced, nothing of what you do is a total invention of yourself, it has all been there before.. we imitate without even noticing it ! wether you like it or not, but about 95% of this is just imitation :), though its good..
you've got a point - but just because I play a tone, rhytm or progression, does not mean that I copy all musicians in the world. There are progression limits to every genre due to certain rules of music, and at some point, each band is going to cross each other. My argument is that the comparison with DT is getting almost ridiculous to a point where it makes no sense anymore. DT is not such influencial band and other bands do not deserve to be called copycats - that's what it all comes down to.
if you come to think of it, even this kind of music was build up on something. with every new band interpreting this genre for itself you got a new kind of music, but it also contains all that has been to create this genre.. if it wasnt for the early rock bands in the 50ies there would be no progressive metal.. its like some kind of evolution, you need certain key elements and add new stuff to progress !
so ,not any band just copies it all from DT, but DT surely has an influence on most bands..
i fucking love it, i agree so much, THUMBS UP A 1000s times... Seventh Wonder ARE SW and DT are DT!!! like the music or not, if not fuck off... but i love seventh wonder more then DT!!! =D
@nanco Man, DT defines modern progressive metal, just like Opeth defines progressive death metal and Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson defined progressivness back in the 70s. That's the way it is, if you wanna compare yourself to improve, you gotta compare with the best there is ^.^
Favorite album of all time. Period.
