If you aren't familiar with him as a stage actor or his entire body of work, then you probably don't think he was special. @septichar, I also think it would've been better had Landis directed. Spielberg's humor in this movie is mostly slapstick (which was already outdated even back in 1980.) That kind of humor works in small doses but it can't carry an entire film.
