I really miss my Viggen, but had to trade it in, mileage was getting WAY too high, out of warranty :( My history with my Saabs has taught me the timing chains break between 110k and 160k. My '95 900SE 2.0T it broke at 122,223 miles.
So....traded in the Viggen for a 2010 SHO. 3.5 Litre Twin Turbo, All Wheel Drive, 20" wheels wearing Eagle F1's. I got it after looking VERY HARD for 6 weeks for a SHO with a 12S package. But it's okay still have the '95 Stg 3 2.0T. It's very nice, fills the void.
I don't doubt it, I've seen even the worst of cars just last and last (Not to imply a Saab is bad...woo no no hehe)
All I can say is lucky you, man I'd have severe anxiety driving it, but because of the history I've had with Saabs. Hell considering how many I've owned, had die on me... I must be one of the most loyal Saab fans/owners of all time lol.
So what year is it, and did you buy it new? I'm curious because if you bought it used the chains could have been replaced. Otherwise, amazing..
I can't explain it, 4 cars in total, all very well maintained, every time the HUD asked for dealer maintenance, I took the car in. I've used Royal Purple and dealer filters for every car I've owned. 6 Saabs, 2 VR6 GTI's (MKIII), my '04 Terminator, the '99GT & '88 GT. My present VR6 & Saab are circuit raced monthly.
RP won me over after getting over 180 passes on a 347 stroker '88 Mustang GT on a 100 shot!
I've had no failures on any other car, although the only cars comparable are the VR6's..
Great choice of filter, I'm not familiar with the oil
Okay.. all 4 failures were used cars when purchased. All under 100k. 2 of them with no records, nothing, but in great shape and my mechanic gave me the go. All lasted a long time before failing, only once did I have any warning. Luckily only one of the failures led to damage to the pistons, so the rest I fixed myself. The bad one I used for parts :)
My Viggen was the only new purchase, and treated me well until I traded, about 8 weeks ago.
@HypnoticSuggestion The B204 / 234 are some of the strongest engines ever made!!! Some able to handle upwards of 600 HP....If by bad quality you mean poor MAFs and a faulty DI cassettes, then Yes I agrree but those are average wear items...Costly yes.The B205 / 235R is poor because of the mahle pistons they used "at least I think thats what they uesd" But that is a simple fix to have a BOMB PROOF motor!
I will also say I think SAAB should have stuck with the B series engines and not GM crap.
Love the ad, Love the music, Love the car! It shows the Viggen's Bad-boy side along with its tame side. LOVE IT! I'm a Saab driver and I can't wait to get one of these to go along with my 9-5! :)
I had a 2002 SAAB Viggen convertible for a weekend. It was a blast to drive. I was very close to buying it until I researched the quality of the new SAABs since GM got their hands on it. Plus parts were expensive and a good SAAB mechanic here was well..nonexistent. I'll always remember that weekend though.
the viggen was considerd a non GM SAAB......yes it was built on a GM platform but had little to do with GM, I would consider it SAABs last stand before the new style Sport sedan took over, remember GM only owned half of SAAB when the Viggen came out. It had SAAB style,a SAAB motor, FWD, and is still unmatched in mid range performance.
Deltaspeed93, absolutely correct. Bout damn time someone realizes about the Viggens, I owned mine since new, traded it for a 2010Taurus SHO. The Wife wanted a Taurus because it's the safest car in America, so I had to get the SHO, this way I would still have a high performance sedan. No Viggen interior tho :(
The SHO is so much faster, EcoBoost is amazing! The performance of the SHO is great fun, but I still miss the Viggen. Such a perfect car. But the SHO is so safe, and that's too important.
I was just as lucky, I had a guy about 60 miles away, was a Saab genius. Charged a bit but not dealer prices!. Kept my Viggen very strong and tight, eh, this is making me miss it thinking about it. The '95 2.0T, even with the countless mods just doesn't fill the void, the Viggen is just, such a desirable car, but I had no choice but to trade it in, the maintenance & fear of chains breaking were too much for me. So I got the 2010 SHO W/ 12S package, it helps fill the void, much faster, and AWD.
I've wanted a Viggen for quite some time, but I can't find them (or really afford one with my four other cars), so I've decided to get an older BMW 325i convertibe for a "fun" car instead to go alng with my 9-5.
And as for the Taurus SHO: awesome car! It has something like a 350 hp twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, right? Plus the new looks are amazing! I've heard they out-perform some of the best European V8's. In all, I really like the new Taurus.
Trop bien !

was the 9-3 viggen awd?
FlyinFreek 2 years ago
Nah FWD, was a 2001, but it was the first year they had TCS, which was nice, really helped in lower gears.

is the 3 door the same as the 5 door?

My 900se has 260K on the clock and still ticking strong on the original engine

Bought it used with all records, i am the second owner. it is a 1997 5 door with the B204l (2L turbo) engine.
Only modifications are a auxiliary input for the radio.

Odd, where they bought used? i have had a few lemons myself.
RP is good. i usually use Shell rotella t-synth (diesel truck oil) along with a bosch filter. works great in these cars.

@HypnoticSuggestion Why didnt you replace the timing belt before it broke?, I have a old 1995 900SE and it runs great
Wise1mr 1 year ago
@Wise1mr I was building a long block, the motor that's in it now, I guess I really didn't care at the time.
It's a chain, and they're not of good quality to begin with. But I admit I'm pretty hard on the cars.

Saab cars are not terribly brilliant (the 9-3 Viggen was panned by the motoring press), but they have a certain coolness, don't they?
They are very likeable cars.
JELH 3 years ago
True. I would rather own a Siib than a beemer, but unless there's a wagon/estate version of the viggen I'll stick with a Nissan Stagea any day.
