  • Bloody hell, Helena is by far the best.

  • patti patti patti patti patti patti patti patti

  • I love all the versions, but I love the movie version. Don't know why, haha :).

  • Angela's is a sort of high-strung crazy. She's the type you'd expect to randomly fly off the deep end. But there's also a hint of maternal affection in her.

Patti's is also pretty wild, but slightly tamer than Angela's. She has a bit more passion to her.

Helena is a softer portrayal, a bit more tragic. Her crazy is less wild, more in control, but there nonetheless.

They're all such different interpretations, it's impossible to compare. All three were brilliant in the part.

  • I think if anyone is going to compare anyone, it should be Patti and Angela? They are both on stage, while Helena's version has been adapted slightly for the screen, I mean her version is obviously a lot calmer, so of course she isn't going to match the other two. (:

And anyway, Patti and Angela are both amazing performers and portray the role of Mrs Lovett in their own special way.

But that's just my opinion. They were all cast by Sondheim, so they all must be good enough :')

  • Everyone needs to stop comparing them.

They all have their own style and interpreted it differently. They all obviously have different voices. I think for those who said HBC was absolutely terrible needs to shut their mouths. She's not a singer, she's an actress. Does she have the best voice? No. Can she carry a tune? Yes. Besides, Sondheim himself personally chose her for the role. Patti and Angela are Broadway performers. Obviously, the movie version is gonna be different. They all did amazin

  • Love Angela, but that accent really grinds my gears, shes an amazing actress though. Patti is such a beautiful singer but Helena is my favourite, I absolutly love Tim Burton, I love Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp is just a phenomenol actor. Tim definitely did Sweeny Todd justice, incredible movie.

  • u can put the voices at same time...

    GOOOD VIDEO

  • Geez Helena sounds like she's falling asleep... whose idea was it to play it so boring like that... especially when this number is done like at such high-octane energy in the stage version? WTF... can we say EWWWWWwwwww... the direction there was completely off... come on. She's supposed to be a CONTRAST, an OPPOSITE to Sweeney in personality .... cheery amorality in contrast to quiet, stern vengeance.

  • You know, Patti's version is considerably faster than the other two.

  • I love Angela! :"D

  • i love helena

  • I like Patti LuPone's "IS THAT JUST REVOLTING?" I like all three of them. :)

  • Not that Angela isnt amazing & she was the original (so it has its pro's & cons) but as far as the theater versions go I like Patti more. She has a very nice theatrical voice & played the part well. Not gonna lie, Helena's probably my favorite but thats most likely because I saw the movie before the play versions. Helena also plays it differently because its a movie & it has to be a bit less theatrical. Overall I think they all did wonderful jobs but just had very different approaches. :)

  • @TitanicDawson1912 I like Patti too. There's something about her... like shes almost insane in this song. That is Mrs Lovett. Someone crazy enough to come up with a plan to make people into pies and go on with it.

  • @TitanicDawson1912 well, dont forget that Patti in concert is a lot different than she was in the actualy boradway revival, and we dont see that here

  • haha @ 2:35 theres a guy in the window behind helena....:}....I lyked the video btw i lyked all 3 voices they were all different which made each performance of Mrs. Lovett special and different =]

  • somehow it look like me like each one fo them wants to steal the show

  • I would always have Helena. Her voice is so beautiful. The arrangements to the score made for her are beautiful. She is a great actress and and a great singer too!!

  • Tim Burton didn't think they were supposed to be able to sing all that well but she sang fine and a more deviant portrayal of Mr. Lovett, but my favorite Mrs. Lovett is Patti LuPone hands down, she was brilliant in the concert version, Angela is Mrs. Potts and that's all I see. Helena I thought did brilliant being bad Patt was funny and cunning, Angela...well

  • and she was the ORIGINAL Mrs.Lovett

  • yes Original does have its advantages but the disadvantage is you set a standard so everyone that does it after you has to be better and no offense to Angela love her to death both Helena and Patti did in different ways mind you

  • They all have their good points but... Carter can't sing...

After I watched the full show by the other two, I tried to rewatch the movie and was too turned off by her singing and had to stop. Though she does look the coolest.

Patti Lupone is my favourite! She's the best singer.

Angela's portrayal seems the craziest, which definitely has its charm. =)

  • Ahhh, it's so lovely that you did this!

Though the line-up does make Helena Bonham Carter's weaknesses as a vocal performer more obvious.

  • I think they're all good in their own unique way The thing about a character in a musical production is; the character changes with the actress/actor. There's no one right or wrong way to do it. They all did breathtaking performances.

If I had to chose a favorite, though, it'd be Patti. She has the best singing voice (sorry Angela and Carter fans) and she made some really strong character choices for the role.

  • Agree completely, each actress brings something different to Mrs. Lovett but Patti's was the best performance, she brought spunk and conieving and was very much in love with Sweeney

Helena was the devient, manipulative, also in awe of Sweeney

Angela was crazy eyed, played dumb, not as decieving or cunning as the other two great because she was the original

  • All about Angela!

  • Helena Helena Helena!! She's the best !!!

  • You cannot say that Helena is better than Angela Lansbury. She played Mrs. Lovett for the very first time which means that what she did was the way the character was conceived. Her Tony Award for her performance proves this. Moreover, her Mrs. Lovett and the one Helena got to play are completely so they are very difficult to compare but Angela Lansbury could do what Helena did with Mrs. Lovett and beyond, but Helena could never do what Angela Lansbury did. This shows who the better actress is.

  • Healana is #1 always. <3

  • Helena is 100 times better than the other two combined. lansbury sounds like shes smoking crack, and the other sounds like shes having a stroke while constipated. carter is better beyond comparison hands down

  • I think they all did amazingly. ^^ it's funny how they can all play the part so differently and pull it off perfectly. But idk it also has to do with how different the 3 versions of the story are.

But honestly i don't think Carter's singing in this song specifically is all that great. I mean she's good and when you're watching the movie you don't really notice cause it's such an amazing movie. lol But when you see it like this back to back to back with Patti Lupone and Angela Lansbury. Ehh

  • But Angela Lansbury is the first one who played Ms Lovett

  • I think Carter needs more energy. If you look at Lansbury and LuPone, they are both bouncing around running here and there. Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be energetic (like in the song "By the Sea"), after all, she's the one running around turning people into pies and getting rid of the evidence.

As for the diva comments, I think Mrs. Lovett is a bit of a diva; she wants things her way and that's why she lied to Sweeney about his wife rather than tell him the truth.

  • I think since it is a burton movie that is probably what he wanted it or maybe Helena just tried to make her more depressed idk I think she pulls it off well

  • Helena got it down mainly because she dosen't have to project as hard as the other two and her voice dosen't get as shrill and craggy at places

  • they are all good in their own ways and its hard to choose favorites, because they all have different styles of singing

but if i have to choose, it has to be helena

but i also love angela and patti as well

  • i think Patti is yelling the song

  • She has to project

  • To me, helena is the best lovett. i did see the movie before the plays, so maybe its just my stero-type. because of the movie i see mrs.lovett as a dark person. but as some of you said in the movie with johnny depp, she was depressed. NOT EVEN! she was happy and todd was the one who was depressed and angry at judge turpin.

but in the plays every one seems happy, and i liked it better in the movie as them looking goth and ect. its a relation to my own life. and i would love her dress

  • Angela is the best Lovett. Helena is the second best and Patti is horrible. Patti plays every character the same, like a diva. MRS. LOVETT IS NOT A DIVA!

  • And Helena ISN'T guilty of playing every character the same?

Depressed crazy girl with crazy hair, that's Helena's only character.

  • That's a more believable Lovett than the characterization Lupone had.

  • Not really. Lovett was never characterized as being depressed, or even stereotypically so. She was also characterized as having a relationship with Sweeney (Sexual or Loving), and enjoying the murders just as much as Sweeney. Patti and Angela got that part right, whereas Helena did not. The only difference is that Patti's version is much more sadistic, and is portrayed as the real brains behind the operation.

  • The point is that stage and screen are two very differant things, and therefore have to be played differantly. Helena got it right for screen, the other vertions work very well, and I really enjoyed Patti's vertion! (Can't say I ever took a liking to Angela's portrayal of the character) But when your on screen, singing and, ulitmatly, dancing in a musical thriller, you have to play the charecter as down to earth as possible.

  • That still doesn't mean that she should have robbed Lovett of her dark, twisted, and humorous personality. Down to earth is one thing, but removing all humor from a psychotically humorous character is a completely different affair.

  • ANGELA IS THE BEST

  • Your opinion obviously, I'm just saying that I really didnt' enjoy it at all...

  • Also, Lovett and Sweeney are characterized as seeming normal to most people. They didn't act or look odd or strange in any way.

Take one good look at Helena and Depp in the roles, and tell me you would trust those people with your life. If you say yes, you're a moron.

  • Patti had the best version of Lovett, I think.

Patti's version seemed to be in it for a sadistic thrill, and was arguably the brains behind the whole thing. Angela's was sort of the accomplice character, who's twisted but lovable. But Helena was just bad. She has no personality, and plays Lovett the way she plays every other character she's every played. She only got the role cause she was banging Tim Burton. She also can't sing.

  • Finally someone who does not believe that Helena is a goddess on earth! :) I totally agree with you! Patti and Angela are the best! And Helena can't sing nor act!

  • Good to know there are more people who think that way. Quite frankly, I'd respect Helena more if she added variety to her roles. She plays the same damn character all the time. She needs to realize there are more characters that are good than just a crazy bitch with whacked out hair.

  • i think helena was good as an actress for the movie, but her singing lacked depth, but considering most of it was digitally edited whispers and she isn't a singer...

I think Angela was the best overall. She was a good singer and played the character best, considering it's a play and got the heart of the character.

Don't get me wrong, I like Helena, but she I felt twisted the character and her adaptation -- while that -- was a little farther away from the intended way Mrs. Lovett was written.

  • i think that Patti is the spunky one...Angela is the funny one...and Helena is the overall best actress, best looking and beast singer...i love Helena the best though

  • Yeah, even though Helena can't sing worth a damn, and Angela is a much better actress than her, while Patti had a better voice.

  • The way I see it is Angela's Mrs. Lovett is a slightly deranged crone, Helena's is a seductress, and Patti's is sort of somewhere between the two.

Which one is overall better though? It all depends how you personally prefer your Mrs. Lovett to be personality wise.

  • i agree with you all the way...

  • 1. Angela

    2. Helena

    3. Patti

Patti is not right for Mrs. Lovett. She's an amazing singer but she plays Lovett like a diva. Mama Rose and Evita are divas. NOT MRS. LOVETT!

  • their all three so different, everyone is special and amazing but my fav is Helena becauseshe puts so much depth in the character, she lived it

  • So everybody needs to calm down & quit worrying about whose voice is 'too soft' & who sounds 'too much like an opera singer'.They are all bringing out different elements of Mrs. Lovett, something ALL great actors do.You accentuate the most crucial components of your character & expand upon a few small ones to make them special.I personally enjoy all three of these very talented womens' performances for different reasons. Lansbury is a comedic genious,LuPone is a flirty ham,& HBC is subtly sweet.

  • I think everyone needs to stop comparing the 3 of them. LuPone and Lansbury are BROADWAY ACTRESSES. Helena was in a MOVIE. They are two very different settings which call for very different critiques. Maybe if they all belted like opera singers it'd make comparing them another story, but the fact that they are literally in different genres of acting and singing you simply CANNOT accurately compare the 3. For HBC fans, the other 2 are oversinging and overacting, and for Broadway fans its normal.

  • I honestly love how ALL three versions are done... Angela brings the comedic element out in Mrs. Lovett's character, Patti LuPone brings an operatic twist to each of Mrs. Lovett's songs, (And I believe Sweeney to be a type of Operretta, not just a musical...) and Helena of course brings out the sexy side of the Mrs. Lovett character... So it's really difficult for me to choose one, so there for I like them ALL!!!! A great video for a wonderful character!!!

  • Well said! =D I agree wholeheartedly, as well, I've noticed that Angela is more the accomplice to the evil Sweeney is doing, and Helen is the sadder version of the character.

  • I like them all =D

Angela is just a comic genious.

Helena made a GREAT interpretation of Mrs. Lovett.

And of course Patti is just...awsome =D Loooove her in Gypsy as well.

  • I like helena, I like that she is bored because she literally is making pies for no one. Angela says her words a little wierd, and LuPone is too operish.

  • mmmm.... angela and helena... i like bouth

angela is very good and she is really fun.. and helena sounds like more cute.. ^.^

patti i never like how she sings... sorry.. but i didnt said that she is bad.. =) i just dont like..

    =)

  • Helena the best!

  • Is Helena in a lower key?

    1) Angela

    2) Helena

    3) Patti

  • yea she is definitely in a different key

  • Angela is great, but my heart always belongs to Patti. Helena sounds kind of bored.

  • Angela is the best. Poor Helena doesn't even come close to matching those other two.

  • LoL

    I love Patti LuPone

  • Yeah, but Lupone is terrible here, she is at her best in the 2005 revival, she really shines there, but all in all Angela is the best of all.
