  • OMG!! Can I live there?

  • people it's more like SHATLEND not shit-land please get it right!

  • Shetland, haha. shitland..HAH.

  • Native peoples to these islands are British picts who were there loooong before the vikings

  • Amazing to think there is like another Highlands and Islands within the Highlands and Islands

  • @SamsSpaghetti Well, Norway pawned Shetland off to the Scottish history books say.

  • @Ardwynna Do not disrespect me like that. Read the previous comments to understand why I posted my comment.

  • @gshunw Your 'joke' was a piece of disrespectful dreck in itself, one I'm tired of dealing with. Act with tact next time.

  • @Ardwynna Who are you??? First of all my comment was not a joke it was an honest question. I was commenting on how beautiful the island was and someone made the comment that the name sounded vulgar hence my question. Don't start an argument over a comment that YOU have taken out of context...I think you should act with "tact" next time and not call someone you don't know a nasty word. This will be my last time responding to you and if you don't like it drop dead.

  • @gshunw There were any number of diplomatic and polite ways to ask about the pronunciation even in light of the conversation. You ignored them all and went with the crudest route, hence my comment. I've heard that "S***land" line my entire life and it is beyond tiresome. You'd be fed up too if people kept saying you were from TexASS. The truth might sting, but you said something rude first and that's why you got what you did. Deal with it.

  • Can you sea the northen lights from shetlaand? I want to go to shetland someday, do they do trips to Jan Mayen from there or the Fero Islands?

  • I must see this place before I die!

  • had a grate time there from robotruss

  • fuckin beautiful!!! it must be a honor to die in a land like this! ^^

  • Is it really pronounced Shitlands? Seriously???

I thought I was pronounced like 'shut' but with an 'e'.

  • @gshunw No, it's pronounced 'Shet' just like you'd say 'Let' but with a 'Sh' at the start and without the 'L' obviously.

  • @gshunw Don't be a dick.

  • @killu19 That's cool that you did too. I'm addicted to it for some reason?!?

  • does the people of shetland feel scottish or norwegian?

  • @dinmamma3234 Well genetics show that the Shetlanders are 65% Scottish Pict descended and only around 35% Viking descended, and Shetland is geographically closer to Scotland than it is to Norway.

The reason that they have around 35% Viking descents there is because the Vikings robbed the land from the native Scottish Picts who inhabited the land, and it was owned by Norway for a while but Scotland did gain the land back.

  • -Beautiful!is not enough to say..

  • I found this island on Google Earth =)

  • @gshunw So did I! It's so mystical.

  • OMG I'm jealous of your island but the name is :/

    change e to i and it's so offensive I can't say it.

No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence! No offence!

  • @trppmdm Hahaha if you haed to pit up wi da waadir you wid ken whit we caa it

  • @Malc666the1 Are you Jamaican?

  • @trppmdm no Shetlander

  • Comment removed

  • these are just some things of shetland though, they didnt put in all the underage drinking ect

  • Please don't think i've anything against the Norwegians or any of the Scandinavian countries. I don't. I've been to Norway twice, Sweden 4 times and about to go to Finland for the first time.

    My GF is Swedish.

I just want Scots to be Scottish. And I want Scotland to model itself on Norway and Sweden. Jumping ship is not the answer, not to Norway or Ireland.

  • Some of the comments below are why Scotland is in such a mess and part of a warmongering union.

If you norwegian wannabes, the unionists and the irish wannabes actually concentrated on being the SCOTS that yous ARE then our country would not be in the mess it is.

Orkney and Shetland had a spell in history that they were Norwegian, but it's been Scottish for over 500 years and before the vikings it was Pictish.

What next? A Welsh uprising in the borders and Glasgow?

  • @albabhoy81 um actually if you think about everyone from shetland was disconnected from scotland for most of those 500 years therefore bearing still all the norwegian values. seaming as most of the population are the descendants of viking and norwegians, and thats part of the beauty of it, the fact that its inbetween

  • The majority of those scenes are not from shetland! haha!

  • I want to visit shetland some day

  • I live up there. Tis... o...k

  • @zfirewargodz haha hey there my little buddy :P and this video isnt too good really... alot of its not of shetland...? seeing as we dont really have trees... :S and its the same stuff over and over really... :P

  • Sjofugla you are very right. I'm from Shetland and don't really consider myself Scottish. If someone asks where I'm from I always say Shetland, never Scotland. I'm a Shetlander :)

  • Nortrix87, you'd be surprised by how many Shetlanders don't feel scottish and would consider going back to Norway.

I hope this will happen when Scotland goes independant.

Scotland is the worst thing that ever hapened to Shetland.

  • im from shetland (constant wind, we haven't had some good weather in a while)

  • And if you knew anything about Shetland then you'd know that the Picts occupied these lands long before the Vikings did.

The Picts were the original Scots and settled on these lands long before the 18000/19000!

Your family were just inbreds to invaded certain parts of the land and 'attempted' to claim it as their own.

  • @chadstur1991 True, the Picts were the early Scots, the genetic haplotype OGAP4 code is Pictish and it's found all over Scotland, Shetland was genetically proved as being 65% Pictish and only 35% Viking descended.

The Scottish Picts are the original peoples of the Scottish off shore isle of Shetland.

The Vikings did successfully rob the land for a while, but Scotland gained it right back.

  • @segano1 Oh dear! justification for land ownership by ethnic genetics, that has got to be a good idea.

  • I'm making the point that Scotland and England are nations whereas Shetland is an island which has been apart of Scotland before you, your parents and your grandparents were born.

Shetland would not be entitled to any North Sea oil, so please, how would you sustain yourselves? Join Norway!

  • I'm from Chile, and I have got interested in Shetland Islands by reading Walter Scott. I must ask: what is the weather like there?

  • Some of the strongest wind you'll ever experience, bitterly cold and with heavy rain, a lot of the time. Nice summers though.

  • i live in shetland, the weather isnt to good

  • Your language speaks for itself....

    We'll see......

  • Fuck off you deluded moron.

The oil and fishing belongs to Scotland and those waters are legally Scottish Waters. Whether you like it or not Shetland is apart of Scotland as has been since time began.

I've been to Shetland twice, there's only a minority of people like you who think their Norwegian and you all get slagged off for being deluded idiots.

North Sea Oil is Scotland's and no one elses. And once Scotland becomes independet guess what, Shetland will come with us.

  • You sound an awful lot like the English talking about Scots who want independence. And Shetland hasn't been a part of Scotland 'since time began', try since the 17/1800's, and even then it's quite easily debated.

  • Sandwickman is right. We don't actually belong to Scotland and there is no legal document in existence that males us part of Scotland. I can't wait for Scotland to go independant because it will open a can of worms in relation to Shetland and Orkney.

seonidh, the "vikings" as you call them never raped and killed anybody. My ancestors(I have a family tree that goes back to 1472) came here from west Norway and Denmark to work the land and raise their families.

  • The norn language and the norwegian culture were removed by the scottish. The last norn speaker died in the 1800century.

Thats probably why people on shetland feel scottish. Altought Vikings in blood they have lived for generations as "scotts".

Shetland shuld do what they want. If they want take back theyre Norwegian culture, they are welcommed home as lost brothers=)

  • @Nortrix87 none of my family consider themselves scottish they consider themselves as shetlanders, also my great grandad still used norn type of words

  • @Alexandrarghh You wuld probably live as people on faroe/iceland if history had bin different.

Youre great granddad still lives? Respect to him if he cling on to the language=)

  • SHETLAND. 5 stars!

  • At 2.48 native Shetland tree (I think) clinging to a steep cliff, out of reach from grazing sheep.

  • I have lived on Shetland for all 13 years of my life, and there is always somewhere to go and something to see.

Going for walks on Shetland is just amazing!! You should all try it sometime!!

    =)

  • i lost my cherry in Clickimin broch (1:28)in 1983

  • great, except some of the images arent shetland, 0:19 for example, 0:22, lol nice forrest!

  • Ha yeah it's not hard to get over the fact that Shetlands a GORGEOUS place to live!

  • It hasn't belonged to Norway since the 15th.century.

  • I love Shetland. Ive lived there all my life love the landscape pictures though

  • Shetland belongs to norway by law it was a wedding gift to scotland and was not made legal. Just take a look at the shetland flag

  • Still the Picts were there long before the Vikings came as you can see in this video with the unique scottish brochs. The vikings took the islands by force from the Picts who united with the gaels to form Alba or scotland. So culturally the island was celtic and part of the british isles long before the vikings raped and killed the aboriginal people there.

  • Don't be such an in denial wanker.

Shetland is apart of Scotland whether you Viking wannabees like it or not.

  • Viking wannabees??. Get your facts right before you mouth off.

You are fighting for your country and we are fighting for ours. Oh, and we'll have all our oil and fishing back please...

  • Good job. The music really goes well with the film. Thanks for posting.

  • Shetland is Scotland you moron.

  • You are wrong m8. it is the shetland islands. so he is not a moron. Get the information first before you complain.

  • are there any famous people from shetland? ust curious? isn't catriona macdonald from shetland or scotland?

  • this is where my grandparents come from, and some of this doesn't look like shetlands isles at all- i think some is cumbria. but ta for posting. it's a long way away. fetlar.

  • Muy bueno !! Gracias, desde argentina.

  • HAHA lies

  • Complete nonsense ! The first 20 seconds don't show Shetland at all (at least not the one in Scotland). What is that all about ? Ran out of film ?

  • ;o My mum and I lived, there and worked in Jarshof the viking settlement ;] But the wheather is really bad.

  • The image at 12seconds in and the image at 13seconds in, don't look like any scenery i've seen in Shetland. I could be wrong? The rest I can recognise as Shetland though. Nice vid too

  • Thats nice... that reminds me of my country Faroe Islands.

  • The initial photos are not of Shetland, they are Cumbria images! Nice vid from the BBC tho! I lived there for 3 an a half years, and always was aware of the history and mystical aura of the landscape. Shetland was my first University!

  • Shetland is beautiful & mystical.

The people are so welcoming and friendly.

Up-helly-Aa is one of the grrrrrrreatest parties on the planet!!!

  • i liv there :D

  • Beautiful landscape like no other.

  • Maravilloso. No hay palabras para describir lo q este tipo de paisajes me provoca. Sueño con poder algún dia visitar esos paisajes. REALLY WONDERFUL!!

  • If I was Bill Gates, I would buy Scotland...his GDP is several times greater than the country...

  • I know this is a joke, but Bill Gates' net worth is many times smaller than the GDP of Scotland.

  • Shetland on the other hand...

  • I love the landscapes!!

  • beautiful music to go perfectly with this beautiful video.

  • Beautiful..It fills me with wonder and awe to think of how our ancestors lived and the things they achieved so long ago on this island.

  • Hmm, I think that if you're showing a vid of Shetland scenes, perhaps the Orkney ones are somewhat out of place. Nice Broch views though but the opening sequences are most certainly not Shetland.

  • Both Shetlands and Faroes are definitely two of the most beautiful and amazing archipelagoes worldwide. I do love them

  • only 3 shit thinks aboot shetland, weather chavs and well only 2 lol :)
