I remember taking one from ATL to DFW and there were 40 people on board, it was being moved there for an early flight out of DFW (Hawaii?). The day had been incredibly hot and humid and when the engines were fired and the A/C came on, condensation came pouring out of the vents like the fog machine at some all night rave. The thing rattled and clattered down the runway and seemed to articulated like a centipede as each 50 feet section or so lifted off the ground. Disconcerting!
I flew on the TWA L1011's what a great plane. In the 80's i got to cater the DELTA L1011's when they would have to sub aircraft. The galley was in the belly of the plane and they had two elevators up to the main cabin.
My favorite all time aircraft. I last sat in her in 1992 from ATL to ORL. Same paint scheme and all. Hearing that distinctive buzzsaw sound really brings it back. I loved how Delta painted their logo on the engines. Nobody else had that look.
this had to have been post 9/11 cause Delta discontinued those old old colors after. Also to u those colors seen on the md-80's b4 takeoff must have been the new colors to u back then right.
@antimatterXXXIII Actually the L1011 was state of the art for it time based on the wing design and a few other things. This aircraft was produced way before 76 and 75, though those AC wings are amazing in themselves. Basically two different eras.
To answer the question as to why the Tristar was discontinued, first it was locked in a mutually destructive sales battle with DC10, which hurt both MDC and Lockheed bad AT a time when the oil crisis depressed air travel greatly and then it was squarely beaten by the new gen 2 engine airliners from Airbus and Boeing in the fuel economy dept. The Tristar was beautiful and really advanced for her time. But she was born into the wrongest possible time.
You forgot to mention that Rolls royce nearly went bust manufacturing the engines for the Tristar & struggled to make profit for Lockheed who, accepted a great investment to keep up with MD Corp. But the DC10 suffered its own downfall with its design flaws & bad engineering which caused many fatal crashes in its early years. If you measure the success between the 2, the TriStar comes up trumps everytime, both in performance, airline choice, reliability, likability, and overall success over the years!
Operationally and technically, the Tristar won hands down agst the DC10. But commercially, the DC10 was LESS of a failure than the Tristar because it sold more copies due mainly to the intercontinental DC10-30s.
The Tristar did have a long range version, the L1011-500. But it came to the market too late (thanks to the RR debacle) after the long range DC10 had more or less swept 90% of the share. It was available from around 1979 when the first long range DC 10-30 was available in 1972.
Unfortunately, Boeing out-sold Lockheed, and more efficient twin engine aircraft eclipsed the Tri-Star in trans-Atlantic service as well. Now, in my humble opinion, you'll never find a smoother flying plane... not even the big Boeings can compete (yes, I've flown in 777s an 747s)... but, Lockheed lost hundreds of millions when a superbly designed and FAR ahead of its time aircraft just wasn't bought by anyone. So they discontinued production early.
you taped in the year 2005?, you know probobly do know where is the Delta L1011 Tristar since 70's, 80's, 90's and the year 00's in the Atlanta Takeoff.
The Co Pilot or the First Officer as their actually called always goes down to the tarmac and inspects the plane and makes sure that it's in good flying condition and inspects the tires and kicks them too, what's so humorous about a FO doing his or her job correctly?
well distance is not the only determinant in selecting an aircraft. delta still fly's 767's from atl to jfk.... im guessing to support the heavy demand.
you can see the 757, the 727 the tri engine aircraft, the CRJ, the DC-9, and the MD-80 and the 767 all on take off..nice variety of airplanes...the smaller aircraft i hav no idea whatt they are called
The Tri stars still fly on....chartered that is. i flew one back in 2002 from Okinawa Japan to S. Korea. And agaiin for the last time I came back from Iraq on one. I love these birds. They to me are a more pleasent aircraft to look at with there blended Number 2 engine design where as the DC-10 and its bigger wingletted brother the MD-11 have there number 2 looking somewhat incomplete.
This airplane was extremely well designed, it was way ahead of its time. The only one that comes close is a 777, and that's saying something about the good ol' TriStar... a Tru Lockheed !
There was that distinctive engine noise that always felt comforting.
For the many times that I flew them there was never another plane I enjoyed more. It was like flying through the air while you were sitting in a lounge chair.
I always felt safe on this plane even going through some pretty bad turbulence and visability issues. It was sad to see them go. But then again, everything changes.
If you ever get the chance to fly in one take it. You will see what I mean.
My favorite all-time plane. I was fortunate enough to get to do a roundtrip on TriStars from ATL to LAX and back in 1996 for an interview trip when I was getting out of college.
RB211 engines really have a beautiful grunt. There's a vid out there with Euro Atlantic taking off from Manchester... and a lovely point where the high whine and low roar both come into sync at full throttle... beautiful...

For some reason this plane was always a comfort when you knew she was going to be your aircraft for a trip.
That was back in the days when the airlines appreciated your business and flying was a joy not an overwhelming task.
