Catnip contains nepetalactone, a terpene. Nepetalactone can be extracted from catnip using steam distillation. Cats detect it through their olfactory epithelium and it simulates cat pheromone. Also, not all cats respond to catnip as it depends on a genetic trait. House cats in Australia for example rarely respond to catnip.
