If 80% of the bikes were stolen or trashed so badly they had to be replaced - over $10 million in combined cost - how can this program possibly be considered successful? Genius of the Paris project? Best transportation project he has seen? Private property creates responsibility. Socialized property creates abuse.
We used a Blue Card last October, you can rent as many bicycles as you want but you have to have a "subscription" for each user. Which means separate user ID and PIN numbers. We took out two daily subscriptions each day for myself and my wife as we were only there for 5 days. We are going back in August and will get two weeklies. It's the best.
ATTENION YANKS: Per previous post, a moment ago: AMEX will not work unless you order the new Blue Card, which is free and is the only one with EMV chip, easy to get if you already have an AMEX - and perhaps an even better deal (no annual fee)
Visitor from USA: OK.... so I'll try my AMEX card to buy a one or seven day ticket - set up my password -4 digits - allow a little extra time if all the parking spots are full and I have to ride to the next nearest one if someone will tell me where it is
Any feedback pleas? Could I buy a NAVIGO online if I'm going to Paris a lot? Thank You
We just returned from Paris and were crushed to learn American credit cards don't work on Velib! We were so excited to try it but no stories we read about it mentioned this, although people in Paris seemed aware of this fact. Rumor has it that AmEx cards have the special chip needed for the machines to accept them, so if you go, don't leave home w/out American Express!
I was visiting Paris last week (thursday - sunday) and I saw those bikes in use and I wanted to try those also. We have a quite similar bike system here in Helsinki but our idiot locals keep breaking our bikes.
Can anyone tell me where from the one-day or one-year ticket can be taken? Coz when the man speaks here about credit card then suddenly he has the ticket in his hand. Do i need to go to some special office or i take it from the machine?
Awesome lol, I am going on the 24th! I guess I could tell you about my experience while I am there... Lyon has the same deal going on, so I could give you both opinions :p.
The machine will print out a ticket with your number. The biggest obstacle is you need a certain chip on your credit card for it to work. My American card didn't work but my cousin lent me his card which was fine.
Nice presentation on a successful bike share program. Check out my video on discussion of a similar program in Philadelphia, USA. Some local politicians are behind the idea here. I hope that the idea transfers well, but some things would have to be different.
This is fine for France but can you imagine this in Aberdeen? Loads of trashed plastic bikes lying getting rained on for months on end until they become landfill. Roll on global warming so these cycling ideas work in Scotland.
A good idea. Commenter qqbis - good idea! I know in NYC, we need to lessen car traffic to make it safe for bicycles. Note: I wish the video's music was less obnoxious, and there was less background noise on the video. Rather distracting.
if they intend reduce traffic car in 40% they should look at london congestion charging and use it together if bike, bus and metro improvements. i.e., get the car lanes and reverse it to public use as bike lanes, bus lanes etc.. reducing competitiveness of car use and increasing other modes
This is a great idea! I loved riding these when I was there. They should have them in the US.

I'm going to Paris with my 14 year son. I've gotten an AMEX Blue card. Can someone tell me if with one card I can rent two bikes at once?
Thanks.

It's very nice. But I'm very skeptical this will work in US cities.

Try checking out the WebSite...

I tried, but the main website is so full with info that you get lost in there.

hm... well, I did some research, and found that you could just buy one from the pay station at the Bike Stop.

oh and by the way, are you a citizen of Paris, or are you planning on going on vacation sometime soon?
