After watching my friend play it, I think the creepy thing is, all the other rituals in the other fatal frame games took place in like the 1800s, but this ritual took place in the 1970s...a different time period, but freaky rituals still happen.

@KHLover1234 After a lot of reading, the reason why the mask broke is inconclusive. It could've broken because Sakuya panicked during the dance or it was a poorly made mask, it doesn't say. But some say that the musicians didn't die right away, but they did die from it, they collasped, didn't recover and died. Tsubaki supposedly died of a heart attack, according to what I've read, the force of the mask being broken caused all twelve performers in both dances to collaspe. TBC after more research.

@DarkValkyrie0512 The reason the mask broke is because it was 'incomplete' and could not withstand Sakuya's blooming due to her strong 6th sense and advanced progression in the Luna Sedata syndrome.

@SuperjojoNova Probably, but remember this ritual was done like, kind of half assed according to what I read. Like the Kanade were supposed to be girls with strong lunar melodies chosen by the Tsukimori nuns and You Haibara just chose five random girls, the ritual had been forbidden because the mask was supposed to be difficult to make and the last ritual had resulted in the day without suffering. I think this tragedy was like a perfect storm. Many bad things leading up to one very bad thing.

@sakura197 Because while the main ritual was going on, or the show ritual, I don't quite remember... for ages the place had been host to this ceremony every time there was a lunar eclipse. It became very showy and was done to anyone who paid to see it on the right now. BUT, there was a true ritural down below the showy one, and that one failed because one of the five girls on the outside did something wrong, ruining the ritural and killing and cursing the area.

@sakura197 Misaki and Sakuya were friends, sort of. Sakuya haunted Misaki with a vision of the Girl in Black. Sakuya of course missed Misaki and she lured her so they could be together again. Sakuya had no desire to harm anyone really. The reason why the mask broke is because during the ritual, the person wearing the mask was taking in lunar energy in the form of spiritual energy. Like the end of the game shows, the energy is supposed to be purified, but because the ritual failed, it wasn't.

The song isn't actually the Tsukimori song, it's "COSTUME CHANGE" :P the Tsukimori song is the one Ruka plays in the last chapter

@Shinjuko445 If you listen really carefully it actually does contain the "Tsukimori Song" in it and the reason it's difficult to make out is because its a mixture of a violin (I think!) and piano and also the "Tsukimori Song" has been supplemented with extra notes for some reason.

Basically Sakuay had to perform a dance called the Rougetsu Kagura which would allow the spirits of the dead to venture into the afterlife. However, at some point in the dance she began to panic and the build up of her emotions caused the mask to break apart and thus causing the ritual to fail.

@00metta00 Also, during the ritual the dancers souls would leave their bodies and return at the end of the dance. For some unknown reason this would allieviate the symptoms of those suffering from the Gestuuyu/Lunar Sedata Syndrome. However, due to the failure of the ritual the souls failed to do that and there was a massive spread of the Getsuyuu Syndrome which caused many suicides.

@00metta00 The reason Sakuya and her Kanade never died was because there was a mock group (for tourist purposes) performing above them. So it was the mock group that never had there souls return and thus died due to the failed ritual.
