@N7TFP this is great! I have a couple of questions for you:
1) At the beginning of the video you mentioned that a repeater will receive a signal (input) on one channel then repeat that signal (output) on a different channel. I noticed your radio display switching from 146.220 (Tx) to 146.820 (Rx); is this the input/output process in action?
2) What is the 118.500 on the left side of your radio display for?
I was thinking of getting an adapter for my UV-3R that just came in, and was thinking of using my CB antennae with my hand-held. Would I need seperate antenne for the 2 meter, or could I use my CB antennae?
@Trymjohndeere well im on a baoji handheld it took me a while to find out how to use the repeater's in australia but i just put my radio on output and one frequencie on the input and transmit on 1 and heard it on the other. but also i have the ctcss to well i forgot but yeh hope that helps
Hi Tyler, I just bought a FT-2900R 2-meter VHF radio BUT I am really new to armature radio. Can you explain the difference between this video and one of your other called "How to call CQ" I noticed there was a difference when trying to make a contact to another listener.
@dreamtoneamps Hi Rob, "CQ" is usually only used on the HF bands, and wouldn't be used on the VHF bands. You would usually just say "calling anyone" on a repeater.
Can I get "Decent" performance using a magnetic mount antenna ontop of a tool box (large, rolling kind) sitting in the corner ontop of the rubber mat? Or do I need metal on metal contact? I'm not looking for perfect, just something better than a hand held with a rubber ducky!
Whatever you do, and I have been guilty of it a few times, but learned quick not too, do not "ker-chunk" or "dead key" which is simply keying up for a second, not identifying, and unkeying to ping the repeater to see if it can hear you. Some hams can find this annoying and some have got on the air and chewed out people for doing this. Just a word of caution.
@xabbu1974 notice when in this video when he transmits, and unkeys, you can still see the signal meter is full and hear like a beep. That let's you know you are in the repeater, and the courtesy tone let's other parties know your tx is over. 73 from KJ4UPD
@xabbu1974 most big name radios will automatically set the positive or negative shift. Wouxun or the other chinese radios, you manually have to program shift. As far as PL, before programming in the radio, simply key up and throw your call our, and you will usually hear a courtesy tone, or will hear feedback from the repeater.
All you looking to get your tech licensese, wishing you the best! You will love amateur radio! The tech test is pretty easy. I am looking to upgrade to extra sometime this year. You can do it! 73 from KJ4UPD
Always learning great stuff from you man! Just got my Tech ticket this month and I've been playing with the 2m repeaters in my area (Birmingham, AL). Each video gets better! And I've taken most of your recommendations. I was wondering if I could submit some requests for future videos? What I have found the most confusing is programing repeaters into your radio. How do you know you did it right with the right PL tones and offsets etc.? Also, what is the diff. between wide and narrow band?
i hope to get my tech. very very soon.thanks for all your interesting videos.great for beginner hams as myself.many thanks and best wishes for a happy holiday season and happy, healthy 2012 and beyond.
great vid.

@CE750 You should have metal to metal contact for that antenna.
