Either she started recording very young, I'll give her that.. or when she left AP and ran off with Coy Bayes her newfound freedom included smoking 2 packs of Pal-Mal non-filters a day... Sarah's voice deepened. I don't think it's just age that caused it but of all the Original Carter Family she had the prettiest voice, in my opinion.
@Commentarian1 Zwonitzer's book about the Carters states that Sarah was a smoker at a very young age, not really unusual for a mountain girl. In the day, Sarah was absolutely a knockout.
But Zwonitzer says that the old-timers called Maybelle 'the belle of the valley'; she could "sing, dance, play several instruments and bake a banana creme pie that would curl your toes". She was also very attractive, and video doesn't reveal just how tiny and petite she was.
@moproducer LOL I'm sure mountain girls had all sorts of vices but I beg to differ. The times, not surroundings, caused Sarah Carter and various other young ladies to bob their hair and smoke. Maybelle may have had a nickel in 5 different jars but Sarah had a whole quarter in one pocket. She had the better voice.

@Commentarian1 I'm not quite sure what you disagree with from Zwonitzer, but I guess you're entitled to your own opinion.
