This group got tremendous airplay in Cleveland, Ohio USA in the early 1970s, or I'd never have heard them. We even got rare live tapes played for us on FM radio there sometimes, so I heard Sandy sing some "modern" stuff, too. The old stuff, the ballads, are fascinating, and I live in France now and really enjoy hearing French stuff, some still done in the old languages. Thank you for posting -- was shared with me by a friend I knew as a teen back in Ohio -- music pals, still!
@senojkj Exactly, have you noticed how accurate and entertaining 'Storytelling ' was back then before recording devices and the printing press. 'Storlytelling' was their way of passing history from one generation to another, throug Living Oral History with catchy tunes added. People remember song lyrics better than any written prose, and as you know the majority of people back then did not read or write.
@nedarc Storytelling is embedded in our nature from birth. Just watch several children together sometime. They will sit around and make up and tell each other stories. That is before they reach the age where daydreaming and creating is considered to be somehow bad and it is squashed along with the spirit. Put people in front of a TV or play recorded music and there is a 50-50 chance they will zone out. Tell them a story in person (if well done) or play them a live song and see the difference.

Fairport have kept going, and all these years later are still producing some terrific stuff - well worth seeing live and buying the latest album. This, however, is still their finest hour. Sandy - I miss you.
As most of us know deep down, this kind of music transends all races creeds and generations....it is and always will be immortal as long as humans inhabit the Earth....God bless Sandy !
I am a metalhead...and this is one of my favorite non metal albums. This song is what got me. I used to collect vinyl and threw this sucker on a turtable. Audio crack.
the ending is wrong: this is the real ending: than the hostage crisis team arrived and kicked down lord arnolds door shot the sucker in the head and he fell to the floor: a grave a grave the sargent cries to put these arse holes in who'd a thought two men would die just to get a little trim.
very interesting! Thank you. I love this song and have always thought the ending is not as it could be. Is there a better(more complete) version out there? I think Sandy Denny's vocals are devastatingly, brillialntly emotional
Awesome song! I first heard it on vinyl years ago (Moat on the Ledge), and had forgotten it was Fsirport Convention who did it - thought it was Steeleye Span. Hard to pick between the angelic voices of Sandy Denny and Maddy Prior though. So glad to be able to hear this again, as it brings back such fond memories. Thanks so much for posting!
What a wonderful collection of gifted musicians and Sandy.................sublime!

What A voice !!!!!
And what a beautifully song, crystal clear
I only picked up Sandy and fairport a few years ago I don't know why I wasn't listening to them when sandy was alive, I really missed something.
But at least we have fine recordings such as Liege and Lief to remind us of that angel voice.

@sapomojado I'm glad somebody ELSE heard that. That was so weird that they were using "Matty Groves" as a holiday jingle.

Richard's playing achieves something indescribable - god like - at the end of this song - the interplay between him and Swarbrick. Just amazing.
