  • This is a very good version. I've only heard two versions, the other being Andy Irvine and Paul Brady's, which is also great.

  • Al O'Donnell does a mighty job of this song.

  • Four thousand seven hundred views for this man. Shows what happens with the passage of time. We forget greatness.

  • never thought I'd say it but this is almost as sweet as Luke Kelly doing Raglan Road or The Unquiet Grave.

  • A voice tinged with a beautiful Dublin accent singing this song better than I have ever heard it sung!

  • I could not agree with you more, he sings it so beautifully.

  • Great Pic of Al as I remember him in the 60s!

  • I heard Al for the first time in Dortmund with the Dubliners and it was great. I never heard him before but he impressed me so much during the concert that i bought me a cd. and all of his cd s were sold out after the concert so i was not the only person who thought like this........

    Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • Great to hear AL ...used to hear him in the 60s in 86 St Stephen's Green ...ballad revival time ...Sammy's Bar was one of his best then .

He may still do the odd night in the Cobblestones .

  • powerful song by a powerful singer. UNDERATED!!!

  • Truelly breathtakingly beautiful .... what a gift :) I was 10 when I first heard this (gulp)

  • Al O donnell IS THE ONLY MAN/WOMAN who can sing this song properly. He is to ballad and folk singing as Tony Macmahon or Joe Cooley is to playing the box.He is a genius

  • Absolutely, he did a fantastic job of this song. To me he fits in the list of Nic Jones, Paul Brady, Martin Carthy, et al.

  • @tazio2

Isn't it strange that Al O'Donnell has been singing for over 45 years without much commercal sucess but loads of people like yourself who say that he is the only man to sing some songs

I wonder could it ybe the fact that he held on to his job in RTE for 40 years allowing him sing what and when he choose.

Great player with some really fine songs and a nice guy to boot.

    Paddy P.

  • @padraigpurseal

I dont know anything about most of that, but he is a fine singer and an absolute Gentleman to boot.

  • @tazio2 Andy Irvines version is much better in my opinion

  • @tazio2 Agreed!....Al was doing it when there was little money or fame involved...he had/ has a unique style.

  • @tazio2 Agreed!....Al was doing it when there was little money or fame involved...he had/ has a unique style. He sang ...never roared or engaged in stage irishism...no names mentioned ...I have to live in this town!

  • What a great voice! This guy hits the right spots........Where's me fuckin' gun?!

  • Brilliant rendition.

  • Brilliant!
