How well I remember this sexist ad...it wasn't exactly subtle, was it, guys? "Big Ginger" insisting that you take her home so you can see what she'll "do to your thirst." Oh well, Cotton Club wasn't known for being nonoffensive back then. I mean, they sold that classic drink "Cherokee Red" too. (Slogan: "Honest Injun--it's terrific!")
@TruWatcher Wow, you make some really interesting points. It's good to know that some things have changed for the better. Thank you for your insightful comments.
I vividly remember the HUGE billboard sign on the top of the building that used ot be on the corner of E. 131st and Miles...featuring the Big Ginger ad for Cotton Club Ginger Ale. She had those big hoop eearings and her hair was flowing like the wind was blowing it. Stuck out because here was White Big Ginger sitting in a black neighborhood. But I LOVED her earrings.
@Tracymmo That is fascinating trivia to know. Thanks so much for sharing. Sorry about the delay in response. I am recovering from a stroke. Thanks again!
One of our classic sexist Cleveland ads...yeah, "You're gonna love my big 32-ounce quarts!" They weren't exactly subtle with this one, were they? I'm not surprised that grown men to this day reminisce about "Big Ginger"!
Yep, a definite "double" meaning in those ads LOL. I wonder if they will ever do a "whatever happened to..." update on Big Ginger or who she was? Thanks for watching!
You got a real treasure there! Big Ginger was always one of my fantasies. I wonder who she was and where she is now? Anyhow, Grandma always, and I mean ALWAYS had a half full bottle of 50/50 waitin' for me in the fridge after I cut the grass! Probably to mix with the Canadian Club, but I wasn't on to that at that age, no matter.....
Yep, I wonder who she was also. I also remember 50/50 Thanks for sharing your memories about your gramdma and for watching this video. Very much appreciated!

My uncle worked for Cotton Club, and I remember him saying that Ginger was the wife of one of the higher ups.

There's NOTHING like a nice cold BOTTLE of Cotton Club ginger Ale...or 50/50...It's just NOT the same in those plastic bottles.
