@TheVansoffwall It depends what you want and value. Berkeley is a very special place, but you need to want it. Visit each place and see what feels best. I am doing my Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Berkeley, and I love it. However, depending on who you are and what you value, Berkeley may or may not be right for you. UCLA is very manicured and in a posh suburban area. Berkeley is old-school beautiful, but in a vibrant and bustling & cosmopolitan community of very liberal values.

You know what, I'm actually going to be a senior in high school after this summer. I plan on possibly applying to Berkley, but believe it or not, my heart is now set on UC Santa Cruz. There's really no issue of whether they'll accept me, but I just fell in love. It's truly an amazing campus, among other great qualities.

As for the professors, I would say there are more liberal professors than there are conservative ones (disregarding moderates). But the general trend among universities is that the more "elite" a university is, the more liberal the faculty tend to be.

Well, interestingly enough, despite the obvious disproportionate political spectrum, only about 1/4 of college professors consider themselves atheist or agnostic. The rest believe in some form of deity. And here at Cal, there are so many Christian student groups. I remember my first year here and it was a grocery store full of christian clubs. I'm taking a religious studies course right now on religion and science and despite what some belief, the class isn't some excuse to bash religion.

In fact, we learn about how religion and science can complement each other and how scientific inquiry actually started due to religion. Yes, Berkeley is quite liberal, but due to the diversity of the campus, people are generally very accepting of others. There isn't some militant liberal group that goes around campus indoctrinating or anything.
