  • great song!

  • i like the Hives version of this but this was pretty good to.

  • I've been a Johnny Thunders and New York Dolls guy since 1973.

I found this song 'I Was Born To Cry' when I bought Tav Falco's Shadow Dancer album. I just loved this song, and never ever knew til now that Johnny did it.

This song just seems made for him.

He's just another great talent that couldn't beat his addiction. Amy Winehouse died today and she was head and shoulders above so many others.

I was listening to Pipeline by Johnny the other day. Rocking.

  • he looks like one of those people on the subway asking for a cigarette, the moves are spot on.

  • This vocal track is SICK!!!

  • A masterpiece.

  • does he says"tell you something about the good and the bad" or "something about the girl i know bad"???

  • I get it.

  • little bitch stole my gibson

  • I like the stunt feet.

  • @idontwantohurtnobody Yeah, being gay must ruin everything for you. Like the facade of homophobia you put up to hide your real yearning to be nailed in the ass by Iggy Pop.

Or else you're just a homophobe.

  • the hives R gay boys. a reliable source says they were cought in their dressing room poken each other in the butt.....and sucken eachother off...i mean total faggits....

  • everyone should do heroin...it will make you be like johnny....do heroin or else you wont have creativity....just do it...dont be a wimp!

  • I don't care if the quality of the video is poor I only care for the music's quality, great!

  • he's a jew, right?

  • @MaetelUsagi what's the importance if he is or not? what's the meaning of that question?

  • @whatisthef i was just wondering what natioality he was....

  • @MaetelUsagi Our boy from Jamaica Blvd. raised Noo Yawk Eyetalian Catholic, making him the proto-Pope of crazy mixed-up kids everywhere, you Muslim.

  • GREAT!!!!!

  • poor johnny.....damn the H!!.....i hope to pass 40.one in a kind,j.t.....we dont get theese kinda musicians anymore....most of the musicians we get now are bad copy cats or music that it's not lived.guys like thunders lived their music...what they wrote and played was their true lives.i respect that.

  • love johnnyxxx

  • Over the top. Hands down.

  • Poor baby

  • Great song, but junkie dancing.

  • @qwisp

....i knew bout foxstrot,i knew bout rock n roll and samba but i didnt know there was a kind of dance called junkie dance :-o

  • love johnny thunders rip love u im sure u gone to a better place xxxx

  • Nice! Johnny was and is the best! :)

  • Was there ever a more vulnerable tough guy? He was almost nonchalant about tossing off killer guitar, and could do so even when barely standing.

  • 20 years times fly

  • OUT...OUT...STANDING

    Just perfect!!!

    For Russian speaking:

Ну что всё ещё слушаем Прилипа и Алты Куклачёву?

  • great

  • Wow, this was great. :3.

    RIP. :/.

And @fakeoutlove, you can't believe everything you read here. I havent heard anything about him having HIV/AIDs..

  • @TheLevityBall He did not have HIV/Aids, if you can check out the documentary "Born to Loose" they talk a great deal about his demise and lots of folks were around who knew.

  • What a great voice ! <3

  • wow your so stupid it makes my eye hurt

  • kickin vocal!!

  • I wish Johnny had covered more of Dion's stuff...brilliant guy

  • GREAT!

    He looks a vampire!

  • July 15 (today) birth of a legend...Johnny Thunders

  • where do you go for Johnny Thunders addiction clinics? listening to his music is OBSESSIVE!!

  • true

  • @penthouse10

    methadone clinic

  • @coldironhands1

but then you sell your methadone for stations of the cross

  • @penthouse10 ---great comment!!! lol. same reaction here. can't quit. Pirate Love, Born to Lose..... it just gets worse.... see you in rehab, penthouse10

  • @prettythings3 addiction to JT isn't pretty. You don't want to hear anything else. You waste your money buying every damned bootleg and bad dvd's. Hear him in your dreams. It lasted real heavy for about a year. Now, when I hear JT it's like coming home. Hard to believe there was a time I didn't know his music. Anyone know what Pirate Love really is?

  • @penthouse10 I think its just because his back catalogue is sooooo extensive, its hard to stop when there are literally a thousand songs, with at least a thousand different versions each.. As an artist Johnny put out alot of material, and was known for being pro bootlegging of any and all live material.. Johnny left us with a vast amount of footage, and audio that will keep us close to him and his music forever.. I'm never lonely when I have a record player and Thunders.

  • I have worn out the cd already. One of my very fav Johnny songs.

    RIP.

    xx

  • love this song!!

  • This song continues to make me smile every time i hear it <3 :D

  • Johnny looks like he's been working out.

  • he played squash every day

  • appart from all the time I knew Him..

  • Johhny mastered it all;playing guitar,bebop,rock,glam,punk

but not life it self...this video was marv...

    thanks

  • c'est excellent! merci

  • yeah the hives!!!!! there cover is awesome

  • grandissimo!!!

  • When Johnny was sober, he was quite a talent. I was at the show at the Roxy, I didn't want to go because the last JT show I saw was a complete train wreck. The Roxy show.....damn. I remember walking back to the car being completely blown away. Absolutely f'n amazing. f'n amazing.

  • the Hives who? this is the real deal! God rest him Johnny T...

  • yes mt friend i have that show on dvd, its briliant, just watched it b4 xmas and had tears in my eyes watching a master at work.

  • Surprisingly strong Dion DiMucci cover...thanks for posting

  • were can I get tabs/chords to this song? cant find any!????

  • its a DION song wrtten by DION DIMucci

look for DION s music and you ll find it but its not as jazzed up of course its mid 60s cool cute guy oldies music but DION from the BRONX was is the best of all of em

  • Hey...once again I agree with you

    KC

  • @monkfistlust - Dion and Johnny T had a few vices in common, of course.

  • The Hives wouldnt last 5 minutes on tour with Johnny T or the Dolls for that matter

  • Johnny T had cancer by this point thats why looks so ill REST JOHNNY

he was the New York Dolls

  • he was 36 here.

  • it doesnt even sound like him

    his voice isnt that deep

  • in his later music career he used this voice a lot.

listen to his dylan cover here on youtube "joey joey"...

  • Another crazy dancer like Iggy Pop;)

    Good song.

  • I love JT but in this vid he almost doesn't look like himself...hollowed cheeks and eyes.

    RIP

  • lovin him lovin him LOVIN HIM

but gotta girlfriend and he's dead

    damn =(

  • hHHHOT DEAD MAN. <3 dancing,, even better.:D ( rip.)

  • This is good. I happen to like the hives better though you know?

  • if you think so, i think its shit !

  • the best of the best!!

  • first time ive seen a ghost dance.

im definitly not sleeping any time soon.

  • what a poor comment, sad..

  • Comment removed

  • he is the godfather of Punk, the little schoolband called Hives shouldn't mess with him

  • @Prowinzling I saw Hives live one time and I can tell that they were just stupid shit

  • @Prowinzling

the hives are actually really into punk. check out there cover of numbers, by The Adicts.

  • @Prowinzling Don't know why you're dissing The Hives. Fact: The Hives are probably THE best live band operating today! Fact: The Hives are well known in their love for classic 50s and 60s rock n' roll! Fact: This song was done well before JT and was made popular by Dion and the Belmonts. Fact: I'd says The Hives were probably covering Dion. Fact: it doesn't really matter though cause The Hives are the best punk rock band right now (real old-school punk rock). Fact: Lady Gaga. Case Closed.

  • I know this comment was like 2 years ago but it still doesnt change the fact that punk music suck and jt hated it,

  • @Prowinzling well, i really love johnny...as hard as i love dion and the belmonts who wrote first this song...but...I wouldn't call the hives "schoolband"...I think the rock too...don't they?

  • kimmen undrar om nån har öl å sälja till han ??

  • Beror på.... vilken sort?

  • like both the hives n johnny version but its just hard to look at him at dat time because of the quality.

  • Love love love him!!! Don't know how many thousand times i've listen to this

  • quel talent!

  • fuck 'em all...let johnny sort 'em out.

  • The Hives are wank. Whoever think The Hives version is better than Johnny's must be sniffing pam or nail polish remover. Johnny RULES!!! R.I.P. Johnny WE all LOVE YA!!

  • Lol yeah, cause that saxophone is really rocking...

sounds like the 80s! A rank stench The Hives truly sort out.

  • well said, fucking hives...wish they visit n.orleans soon if yo know ehat i mean.

  • I really like both versions...stop fighting

  • The Hives stink! JOHNNY DOES THE BEST ON THIS SONG! And he wasn't a junkie! he just has made a few bad choices in his life. (and most of it is Keith Richards's fault!) Keith was Johnny's Idol. Keith was a bad influence with drugs. I wish drugs, cigarettes, and alcolhol was NEVER EVER invented. RIP Johnny Thunders!!!

  • I am a huge Thundersfan, I have all his official dvds and cds, and lots of bootlegs and for me Thunders was the greatest. But your comment is really stupid, how can you say that is was Keith Richards fault that JT made the wrong choices. Yes Richards was Thunders Idol, but it was Thunders own choice to start doing drugs.

  • No.I said it was mostly his fault because of his influence on drugs. I know it sounds bad, but its the truth. I didn't mean to offend Keith in any way though, I'm just saying how it was. It seriously isn't ALL about the drugs though! Drugs are terrible I have to say.

  • Remember that drugs like morphine were developed to give relief to suffering patients. It's how they're abused, that's what's terrible, but not the drugs themselves.

  • them blame CLAPTON to and GINGER BAKER who was a speed freak, speed was the first heavy drug JT got into as a teenager, Blame every rocker who took Drugs that THUNDERS dug Hell blame Elivs the pill head JT loved pills as a kid blame BobMarley JT loved reefer

thats dumb blaming Keith did keith come and put a gun to JTs head and say shoot up boy become a junkie! NO!

so rediculous some of the things written here

How about people talk about his MUSIC

for a change and forget the DRUGS!

  • are you like on weird bad drugs...and if that's the case jeez just get better ones!

    aka KCRamone

  • No I don't and will NEVER take drugs!

  • I didn't mean to offend you so don't take any of this too seriously...we all loved JT...peace, man

    aka KCRamone

  • It's ok,and you are right we all really truly loved Johnny. I hope we don't only love him because of his music... but for the person who he really was.

  • that's REAL fuckin life,to the fullest, take a deep look in jt's eyes ,if u still don't understand ,go and do somethin else baybaaaayhhh,

    cheers everybody

  • I think I like both versions :)

  • I hate to break the news to ya MaxJagStang, but your a fuckin dipstick. but, who knows, maybe you like Green Day too, I wouldn't be surprised. :]

Have a great day everybody! ESPICIALLY the JT lovers out there!

  • the hives do it better :P

  • You serious???Gotta be kidding man!!Johnny is the fuckin rocker per se!!!

  • Fuck the Hives.

  • come on, man! Show some maturity! Of course, all origionals are better in their own classic way, I just enjoy the hives' version a little better and there's nothing wrong with that. I have no problem with Johnny at all, he's fine. It's you who'se been overreacting and posting rude comments about my favourite band. You don't have to like them. Just you don't have to fuck them either.

  • fuck the fucking hives.

  • The Hives fucking own.

  • Own what?.........Shit.

  • They own the motherfucking world.

  • Thats funny, considering how shit they are.

  • That's why they're called The Hives :)

  • I don't agree.

  • jhonny thunders EL MAYOR ROCKER DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS.

    JT ES ROCK AND ROLL

  • Joder yo ya flipaba con él con 15 años. Eso es rock'n'Roll y no el puto Crazy Cavan. He dicho.

  • Fuckin bad ass! Long live JT!

  • Johnny was amazing!It's a shamehe was a junkie...He should've been bigger than life!!

  • Fabolus!

  • anyone got an undub version of the vid

  • This song I didn't know and it's superb! 5n hid Paris days,back

in 1977, he used to honour us with a visit to the club we run

called La Boule Noire, in Pigalle. He sometimes even played

d.j. for his pleasure and our. He pointed out to us his first of all reference Carl Perkins. Bye Johnny, always in our hearts. Gino

  • Man!!! This made my day!!! I'm expecting Copy Cats soon...!

I know some day, soon yeah, my master will call

and when he does, I know, I won't cry at all!

Until it happens folks, I'll go with the tide

and I know, yeah, I was born to cry!

  • Yeah,a little doo wop punk by JT.Love it.Better then Dion's version.

  • This song is the best thing that happened to me today, because it's the first time I'm listening to it!

  • The Hives did a cover of this song

  • and it sucked.

  • johnny was great, when he was straight!

  • "Copycats" is one of my all-time fave Johnny albums- every track is phenomenal. "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" is a tear-jerker, and this song is a blast too.

Johnny looks a little bad in this clip, but he's still workin' it. We love ya, Johnny!! RIP!!

  • this is my favorite song ever!

  • The more I watch this this the better it is.

I saw him play "These boots are made for walkin'" here in Berlin at the Loft. Anyone record it, I stupidily didn't & he died quite soon after. God save 'im.

Does anybody know if he was related to Dion?

  • I kid you not, thisis an outtake

from The Fearless Vampire killers #;~€

  • i love that song!!!

  • tão boa quanto a versão do roberto carlos!

  • Great song and performance. Johnny's really belting it out

  • nice job, brought back alot memories'

  • genauil..Colette qui vit a madrid..je remercie arlette et frederic

ic qui m'ont fait connaitre ce fantastique johnny thunders a liege

  • really gotta give him credit for this one! r.i.p johnny

  • yeah hes great when straight!

  • VERY GOOD THANXX one of the tops from his last years in my opinion..reminds a bit of Willy de Wille..great!

  • He sure could dance!

  • This song kicks ass.

  • Did anyone notice this is NOT JT singing? The audio track is from a tribute colection.

  • I stand corrected, I have never heard JT sing like this...

  • It's Johnny singing it was from "Copy Cats" an LP of covers he did with Patti Palladin in 1987.

  • This is one of my favorite JT songs now.

  • actialy it's not JT it's the singer from the heartbreakers i know it dont sound very much like him but listen and you hear that it is.

  • What do you mean. This certainly is Johnny Thunders and he also was the singer of the Heartbreakers, so I really don't know why you are saying that this is not JT.

  • that is him! only 1 johnny r.i.p

  • I just doesn't sound like JT's nasaly snarl. The BAD sync with the video seems like an overdub. So sue me. READ all the posts and see that I retracted that. I have been listening to JT for 30 years, I bought "Live at Max's" and "So Alone" on wax in '79! In '88 we didn't have the internet, to get Albums that stores did'nt stock in any kind of volume. This concludes the History lesson tday. Quiz next Friday.

  • But it is really JT.I am a huge JTfan, I have all his official cds and lots of bootlegdvds and cds. And I also have the cd which this song is on, that cd is called copycats, it's from 1988 but it is recently(this year)released again. Copycats is a cd where JT and Patti Palladin are doing covers from their favorite songs from the fifties and sixties.

  • Oh SORRY I didn't read carefully, now I know that you did know that it was JT, so sorry for my last comment. But I don't understand that onibakuagain. He said it wasn't JT but the singer of the Heartbreakers. Well anyone knows JT was the singer of the Heartbreakers.

  • I think he meant it sounded like Walter Lure. Waldo's voice is a bit deepe rthan JT's normnal tone

  • We're so fortunate to have the 'net to get all of these JT treasures. Back in 80's and 90's this stuff was just not available, there was no venue to sell it. I have spent the last 7 years replacing all of my wax on CD and have found all this "new" uncovered stuff. I had always heard about "Copy Cats" but could never get it until now. We couldn't find out when JT was playing unless we trekked to NYC area to get the Aquarian Weekly. Richard, any JT fan is cool in my book that inlcludes you.

  • Thank you, and I think that you are right and that he meant Waldo. There are also some very good liveclips on you tube from Walters band the Waldos. Walter is still performing these days. And you were lucky to get to see Johnny live, I never got to see him live. At least he left us with some great music.

  • its Johnny no doubt about it.......

  • mister gobacktogo!! please post a more better version!!!!

  • I have a version that the sound isn't off, want me to post it?

  • please do!

  • please do put up a better video pleez with matching sound

  • We went to the trouble of replacing the soundtrack to this - the original had some Frenchman chatting over the top - and the first half WAS pretty much in sync, but it got mangled somehow by Youtube. (The second half went out; Johnny was miming and they've obviously dropped in repeated bits almost at random.) You can see the exact same file but with a bit better sync than this up at:- WorldWideWeb(dot)last(dot)fm/label/Jungle

  • superb video,he was always a ROCKER RIP JOHNNY

  • dion rocked and this rocks harder

  • I just wanna say thanks to my son Joel for sending this video to me its made this old rockers day.I last saw johnny T at the Escape Club in Brighton...good times....good on ya son.

  • cheers dad

  • This is obviously Keith. Johnny must have been too sleepy.

  • Priceless performance. Can you say Rock Star? And Johnny always had great shoes.

  • Johnny had vitiligo or something similar. I don't know how much of his body was affected by this but I suspect one of the reasons he wore long sleeves was to cover this as well. Check hands and wrists in any pics from the mid 80's onwards for evidence thats when I first noticed it anyway. JT wore make-up most of the time in public and his lifestyle was never gonna give him a healthy complexion!

  • Are you sure he had vitiligo or something similar, because this is the first time that I heard that. And I thought that he always did wear long sleeves to cover his marks that he got from shooting dope, and that's what almost everybody thought.

  • Johnny would be nothing without your little thoughts. Try leaving your bedroom sometime.

  • And MottOne, who the fuck are you to tell me what I should do.

  • yeah johnny had vitilgo his doctor told him not to tour japan but he did anyway and two weeks later he ended up dying a mundane death do to that but pple at the mourg didnt bother checking cuz they thought he was just another junky
