Those horizontal and diagonal supports take the weight of the tower and push down and away from the center. The stress is on the pieces that hold the plates together.

Removing one of these pieces allows the plates to slide apart.

you should build it again but as a free-fall tower ride put an elevator for the lego minifigures to ride it and drop on.
