morality comes from the social process in which we construct value. Secular humanism is where it's at. There's a reason why values like love and courage have existed cross-culturally throughout history; it's because it's inherent, it's within us. Well, morality isn't exactly a choice. It's "programmed" into us, ingrained in us after millions of years of evolution. We don't need to know WHY we feel something (incest is gross, killing is mean), only that we feel it...as such emotions are beneficial to the survival of the individual. So during *millions* of years, emotions evolved, and those with beneficial emotional traits out-produced those without them.

@JoeyPsych It is pretty bad here...I know only a handful of people who are atheists. If you are one it's usually best to keep it to yourself. My parents would pretty much disown me if I ever told them. Ufortunately I know alot of people in the same boat, some have even been denied jobs by people who didn't want to work with an atheist. It's especially bad here in the south!

Well, morality isn't exactly a choice. It's "programmed" into us, ingrained in us after millions of years of evolution. We don't need to know WHY we feel something (incest is gross, killing is mean), only that we feel it...as such emotions are beneficial to the survival of the individual. So during *millions* of years, emotions evolved, and those with beneficial emotional traits out-produced those without them.

I don't understand the atheist point of view to abolish religion, religious people should just shut the hell up, but still be aloud to believe what they want.

@JoeyPsych I don't want to neccessarily abolish religion...I just want to be given the same right as people supposedly have in this country to believe in (or not believe in) whatever I see fit without being raked through the coals by intolerant people. Christians tend to claim it's them against the world, and that our society is "anti-Christian" when it's the other way around, at least in America. I have to hide the fact that I'm an atheist from friends and family to avoid rejection.

Maybe I'm wrong about it, but it almost seems like being an atheist is the same as being gay. where you live both are denied freedom of speech, while in my country, it doesn't matter who or what you are, as long as you don't hurt people.
it's a cultural protest to stand for what you are, is it not?

@JoeyPsych It is pretty bad here...I know only a handful of people who are atheists. If you are one it's usually best to keep it to yourself. My parents would pretty much disown me if I ever told them. Ufortunately I know alot of people in the same boat, some have even been denied jobs by people who didn't want to work with an atheist. It's especially bad here in the south!

So my opinion untill now has been that atheists are basicly the same as the religious people, constantly bashing eachothers heads in, denying eachothers opinions. @JoeyPsych Our country is very much divided into groups of people who can be intolerant of eachother, whether they are republicans vs. democrats, christians vs. non-christians, or even racists vs. non-racists...it's never ending and one of the major problems with America. We used to be a very open to a lot of things, but lately we as a country are starting to become more selfish. And a lot of the people here either adore or hate Americans :P But still, if it comes to religion, people here are very open minded. Well, that is if you're not muslim unfortunatly...

@killallnonbeliever I did, it's actualy a very intresting book, at least if you know how to read it. Don't take the bible litteraly, and don't take it out of context. You do have to realise that the bible was writen in a time when humans lived differently and didn't know as much as the modern society does, and therefor to place the ideas that they came up at the time in our time is just plain dumb, so if you're smart, you'll use the bible for a different point of view.
