I will eternally regret to have missed that - I would be ready to travel around the earth to see it performed in such an extraordinary way with musicians and singers as excellent as these...
This brought a wide grin to my face... I dearly wish this sort of thing happened more often; it's obvious that both musicians and audience are having so much fun out there--and it's great music at the same time! This video alone puts the lie to classical music being crusty and boring!
This is a perfect example of the value of YouTube.
I found this and other "Sauvages" videos from this production here and I love them so much I went right to Amazon and bought the DVD!
This is so much fun, I can't wait to get my discs. This production seems to me to capture the spirit of Rameau's music so well! Baroque opera does not have to be stiff and slow!
this is a wonderful production and this final dance was a delightful surprise, the best "good bye" that a conductor and his musicians and singers can give; obviusly they were playing and singing with joy and love for the music... and the audience took part in that joy .. I dont understand when people complain about this demonstrations ¿so, because its opera its supposed to be tragic?
Indeed an exellent production! I feel really sorry for those who haven't understood the performance, the video is from the ENCORE, i.e. AFTER the opera!!
BTW is Mr. Christie nothing less then THE(!!!) man who rediscovered French Baroque Music when he came to France in 1971 and founded Les Arts Florissants in 1979. The rest is history ... I highly recommend to read his biography on his homepage. It reads like a fairy tale and every lover of music and esp. baroque music should eternally thank him and his lifetime achievement.

I'm sorry but if one spends a GREAT deal of money AND your lifetime studying and perfecting the concept of authentic performance practices then THAT'S what you should do when it comes to the public performance. I know they were having a good time up there but I expected to see Christie or someone else break into Jackie Gleason's 'ol "And Away We Go" dance. He'd always say after his opening monologue "A little traveling music, and AWAY we go!"

If you want "fun" in an then watch "At The Opera" with the Marx Brothers, 1935 MGM. I've performed baroque music as an "informed" performance and we still had fun without turning it into an episode of the Three Stooges. Each has its own place and time.
Hmm... the audience seems to be enjoying themselves. Enjoyment of opera, BTW, shouldn't only apply to the instrumentalists and the [pseudo]literati... it has to extend to the audience as well. Otherwise, there's no point. Opera needs to be able to grow with the times, or else be only available and relevant to some small, pompous elite. You can't put "rules" on things like this.
This sort of thinking is the reason why most people find opera old and stiff. This might not be the proper period representation but it is a good way to approach new audiences.
You mean, most people who don't know anything about opera find it old and stiff. Once an appreciation is developed it becomes relevant and vibrant.
But you need more, don't you?
And you think everyone else does too.
This is a fine production and does not condescend in any way to it's audience. It is remarkably traditional and true to the original spirit of the piece. (Unlike other productions of theirs.. . )
I'm sorry but I think you mean that most people who know nothing about opera find it old and stiff. But once an understand is developed it becomes vibrant and relevant.
But you seem to think people need more than the genius of the music.
This is an extremely good production and it does not condescend in any way to its audience. (unlike other productions of this group).
I need more? Of what? I don't need "more" of whatever you're refering to. I just wanted to say that this production is not treated like and antique but as something "releveant" and "vibrant" as you said. And I like opera, I'm not a connoisseur but I don't think I'm just attrated to it because it's "circus" but for the music itself.
I will eternally regret to have missed that - I would be ready to travel around the earth to see it performed in such an extraordinary way with musicians and singers as excellent as these...

seems liek a great opera. Why has it been staged as a pantomime?

@Waldvogel91
This is not "grand opera". This is an opera-ballet, whose purpose is entertainment and not a "tragédie lyrique".

The era of Zeffirelli and kitschy conventional staging is over. Bravi!

Oh yes... God forbid a person should have a bit of "fun" with his art, because opera and ballet are supposed to always feel archaic, no?
