Such golden memories for us aging baby boomers. No one could both stir and soothe the pangs of young love like Sam Cooke back in the innocent times of the late '50s and early '60s.
As R.J. Harris put it: "The greatest voice that ever sounded out."
...is, as far as I know, Mackie isn't a natural singer. We wouldn't want a corny lip-singing movie like 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'...but Mackie has the edge Sam had, and is young enough. Another good actor is Chiwetel Ejiofor; he actually looks like Sam, more than Mackie, and is currently 33...again, I dont think he can sing naturally but these are good casting choices, look and bearing-wise.
A movie's currently being made on Sam starring singer Ray Lavender...I don't like the selection (Ray playing Sam). I read a recent interview where Ray said he was originally going to bring some of himself into the role, until Jamie Foxx met him and told him to get into method acting; to thoroughly study Sam and become sam. Ray reportidly said "Ok, I'll do that". My reaction's like you didn't plan on doing that already?!?! IMO, actor anthony Mackie would make a great Sam Cooke, only thing...
@Raphuzzler he was killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but he loved women she was a hoe and she stole his pants with his money the hotel clerk did not know that she shot the famous sam cooke i dont think she meant to do it she was just scare
I don't know what New Jerusalem will be like in eternity but I hope some of the soulful singers like Sam cooke will be there singing and helping all those who made it over to praise the Lord! That includes myself. See You someday Sam. RIP!
After hearin vocals this smooth and pure, how could anybody conclude anything otha than, "Sam Cooke is the GREATEST musician of all-time"... I concur. Sam Cooke deserves a movie about his life, so many otha artists have it. But Sam Cooke's turn has been loonnngggg overdue. Sam Cooke is indeed "The Inventor of Soul". RIP Sam Cooke.
Definitely one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century, if that's what you mean, I would agree. The poor sound quality doesn't do his voice justice here.
@montecarlo0 my name is diane jeffery when i was a child sam cooke lived with us because my father was trying to mg. him when he was gospel i klove sam cooke he would always sing to me so i know all his songs and his lifestyle i would love to see a movie about him rod stewart would be the one to help us because him and bobby womack loved sam please chat back to me about sam he was my play uncle and i loved him dearly diane metters55@yahoo.com
@Treavce I believe John Legend could give it a good shot. Sound is a liiiittel different than Sam's, but is original. Heartfelt...from the soul. And he has that build, and old school look ANYway. LOL!! Love my old music. 36 yrs old, born 10 yrs after my bruthuz and privy to listening to my parent's old records...Sam, Aretha...good music. Meant something....love it. CanNOT hear "Bring It on Home to Me" enough.
@brandongyrl please no. you have to go with the way sam looked to. i think legend would fit if you based it on his looks. how about an unknown singer/ actor who looks more like sam? hollywood needs to get out of using the sam old well known people for movies. we need new talent in hollywood
@cliffe98 That guyin the opening scene isactually singer Dionne Warwick's son. Dionne actually was headed to LA the day Sam died; she was going to spend her birthday partying with Sam. So it's a strange, sort of ironic twist of life that her son winds up playing Sam in the movie 'Ali'.
You are priviledged. You special few who has an opportunity to hear a phenomenon. The man who had the ability to reach the part of man that connects us all. That deep part. The inside. Objective Beauty.
Man he's been my favorite artist for many years now and I just can't stop listening to his music. Maybe it's the innocence that comes across his voice.
"sam cooke, then michael jackson: best male voices"
MJ was a great entertainer, but he was nowhere near the singer that Cooke, Lou Rawls, Levi Stubbs, Ronald Isley, Chuck Jackson, Al Green, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and many others were in their time & prime!
What a talented voice!!! Was he a human being, are you sure? He was so above, i never heard another singer performing by this way. I think i'm dreamin whenever i'm listening for his tube.
It's all just for you anymore......nothing else matters....you are what's important to me....you make me happy and I want to give you the same feeling......I live my life...just for you....Yoo-HOO.....

He was most likely robbed be a lady he had taken to his room in a hotel/motel. When he found out the lady was gone he went to the manager. Sam Cooke, being drunk and angry, and half naked (because the lady had taken most of his clothes) got to close acording to the manager. So she shot him. The clothes were found later, but the money in his pockets was gone.
the purity of the melody, the unsophisticated (but not silly) lyrics and his ELEGANT voice made the songs like this one absolute magic. yes: the magic does not exist in the world... except in the sam cooke`s songs. pure poetry.
TOTALLY AGREE!! There is just something about Sam Cooke that no other singer on God's green earth has!!! He definatly has the best voice of all time!!
I was just thinking if he was alive today and did this song in a duet with someone like alicia keys...how much better popular music would be if so many didnt die so early, left a large gap.
This song runs deep in my heart. I remember this and ChainGang had me missing my girl and Dallas, TX (my home) when I lived in Seoul S.Korea. Especially at the end of Chain Gang when he says, ill be coming home one of these days.... and everything I did in Korea to better my life for me and my chick, family. Bring it home to me is a classic 2. Cooke is my favorite singer and im only 28, a first generation American who taught himself about this music. RIP Sam .. I know ur still piping them notes.
