  • Hi. I hope you will respond. I use cubase 5 and a roland sh 201 synth. What is the problem us that i want to sync the tempo from cubase into the sh 201's recorder. Because there is no display on the roland sh 201 it is impossible to get the right tempo. And another thing. Is it possible to transfer MIDI notes from cubase into the sh 201's recorder? Please reply. I would be very happy

  • YOU KNEW THAT DAMN PAD WAS GOING TO COME TO A COMPLETE HAULT ON THE RELEASE AND START FROM THE BEGINNING WHEN IF YOU WERE TO CHANGE IT TO AN AUDIO FILE THEREFORE ITS WOULD HAVE NOT CAUGHT THE PAD'S RELEASE ON THE END

  • @shinnaraku2 I didn't think of that originally but you are right it would chop off the release at the end of the audio track, just extend the loop longer when converting into an audio track, and to create a loop just then copy and move the track along and use the crossfade tool. Thats one of the only main issues about hardware synths in general when converting.

  • Hey there. Many people say, and it's even written on the back of the synth, that it can travel AUDIO data via USB. How can it be done? I always need to connect the output JACKs to my audio interface in order to get the sounds in the speakers. Can the sound of the SH201 be routed via the USB to the computer then to the audio interface and to the speakers finally?

  • @urukang Its possible to use the synth to transfer audio data, however you can either use the synth or your audio interface, but not both at the same time (unless on a mac in which you can create an aggregate device but you may have clocking/jitter issues). I think you have the best solution using the synth outputs into your audio interface as sound will be better replicated using your audio interface's AD/DA converters rather than those on the SH201. The manual may have something on this too :)

  • Oh, and if you want to use the synth as the main audio interface (not recommended if you are using microphones and the like to record also) then select it as the audio interface in the Device Manager page, and connect your outputs of the synth directly to the speakers.

  • @SolosWithStyle I dont want to use the SH201 as an interface. What I try to do is using only one single USB cable to connect the synth to the computer, so all data, including the generated sound of the synth and the midi transfers via that single cable. Then midi data goes to Cubase and audio data goes to the UA-25EX (that connects to the PC via USB) interface that has the speakers on its output. But now I got to use at least a jack to send the sound of the synth separately to the interface.

  • Heey i have installed the editor on my comuter in the folder : vstplugins ..

But how do i open it in cubase it doesnt work :S

How do you have installed it ? and how do you open it?

    Greetz Noijze

  • @noijze Look in the Devices -> VST Instruments area of Cubase.

If it doesn't show up in that area, make sure its not in the VST3 folder, just in the VST one. I think there are two possible places to put the plugin on a PC, so try putting it in the other location (program files\steinberg\VST i think) Otherwise, search for a folder called vstblacklist.xml (to my knowledge) and delete this folder (this is where all the plugins that cubase doesnt like are shoved).

  • Heey nice,

Does the SH-201 send audio to the usb-cable to cubase to ?

and if that is poseble can i it still as a midi devices ?

    Greetz

  • @noijze You can allow the SH201 to send audio to your computer through USB, you have to go to the VST audio system (shown on the video) but select the synth as your ASIO soundcard. Then connect your monitors to the outputs L and R. You can then use this as a MIDI device by setting it up in a similar way as shown on the video, but when you load the audio track to record your synth on, you want to select the synth as the input source and turn monitoring on.

  • Is it possible to connect a Roland E-15 to FL Studio in order to play live?

  • @congrainshinny yes but i dont know how

  • @congrainshinny It is possible, if you have an audio interface select it as your device, then plug the outs of the E-15 to the line inputs of your interface, its pretty similar to the SH-201 but using FL studio. You might get a bit of latency though so it depends how good your audio interface is. Could you not just connect the audio outs of the synth to two of the line in's on the front-of-house mixing desk? Most large ones have dedicated line ins. Hope this helps :)

  • @SolosWithStyle Unfortunately I don't have an audio interface. Would it still work using a USB connection to a laptop, or would you advise me to get an audio interface?

If so, how would I select the bassline to use during each song? I'm thinking of having a live setup soon like an actual band, percussion/guitars and all but myself playing the piano and launching samples. If I was to get a Novation Launchpad could I use it simultaneously with the synth on the same laptop?

    Thanks for the help. :)

  • @congrainshinny If you don't have an audio interface then you can get a cheap one, but it should work fine thru laptop USB. Live, when you want to change the sounds, you can use the Program Change MIDI command and place it at various points in the songs and stuff so that the sounds change automatically for you (have a look online about MIDI commands) Otherwise, if you want to change sounds manually, you can use the sound bank buttons 1-8 onboard :) Again, just beware of latency and buffer size.

  • @SolosWithStyle Thanks so much again! I'll definitely be back to you if I have any more tech problems. You have a wealth of knowledge! ;)

  • @congrainshinny No problem :) I hope you find a solution that works :)

  • I'm assuming this would work for my GAIA SH-01

  • omfg thank you... this was pissing me off for ages!

  • @Sanguinarian13 No probs :)

  • Any audio interface that features line inputs will be fine, and as most do you have a pretty wide choice of what to use. Some good ones are NI Kore controller 2, Audio Kontrol 1, as they feature only line inputs. If you already have line inputs on your interface and use those. If you are unsure you can always use the built in synth interface and record directly (you will have to plug speakers into the synths outs to do this) but the interface I am using with it is the Fireface 400.

  • Which audio interface is best for this?

  • thanks

  • Hi SolosWithStyle, please see your personal messages in your inbox!

  • @MAProject2222 Hi, I have read and replied to it, I hope it helps clear things up :)

  • Hey, Solos, I have PC Vista, trying ot hook up the Yeti usb mic to cubase and to no avail.

Please do yo have any Ideas?

  • @biglock74 @biglock74 I am not sure myself but I had a look on the net for you and this is what I found on a forum:

If you are using a USB mic, It should be connected to an alternate Usb port or hub. NOT the sound card.

Check if signal is coming through in sound recorder.

    1. If windows installed a generic driver, or downloaded one from the Net; delete it in control panel/system/hardware, and install the proper software from CD.

    2. Reboot

    3. Create an audio track and check whether it shows.

  • Hi SolosWithStyle ! I very like your video so as your preset of Sh 201, I just wanna ask if you made some adjustments to this preset before making this video cause originaly mine preset sounds like a bit filter opened. I just wanna make sure if there is nothing wrong with my synthesizer!

  • @MAProject2222 Hiya

I think the factory presets may vary slightly depending on when you got your SH201, but I think you may be hearing that the filter sounds slightly more opened due to my AD/DA conversion on my Fireface, or the fact that the mic I had my voice on may have picked up some of the high frequency content of the sound as well. Don't worry your SH201 is fine and there is nothing wrong with it :)

  • Comment removed

  • To be honest i have never tried automation with the sh201. But giving an intelligent guess, try loading the sh201 editor software into cubase and then see if the parameters show up for automation, a lot of the synths parameters are also midi assignable so you could try assigning a CC to the parameter you want to automate and do it directly on your midi track. I will have a look into this anyhow :)

  • can you make a video for see how you make automations from your synth to Cubase and for see how you can manipulate them?

    Thanks for your videos...

  • hi dude, i got myself a cakwalk audio interface i think the model is UA-25EX, i've installed all of the drivers and stuff but i can't get it coming into cubase. i havnt done this before so i'm wondering if you can give an explanation for dummies on how to connect it so its coming through and going out of the correct inputs and outputs. oh! i didnt say either, what i am trying to acheive is recording vocals on to a track i have produced already. hope you can help. J

  • Unfortunately this is the only way to directly monitor the sound. But in a way it makes sense because when you want 5 sounds from soft synths, you would load 5 VSTi synths in cubase. The Roland can produce only one sound at a time, just like your go-to software synths, so if you wanted to play 5 sounds at once you would need 5 synths. Try composing using just the soft synths for 'dummy' sounds and at the end substitute the SH201 for the required tracks so you can record when parts are sorted.

  • Isn't there a way to get the sound coming out without putting the direct monitor on? because it seems like you can input midi notes and all that but you still gotta record the sound coming out.. you know what i mean? like when you use a VSTI.. you could normally load literally 5 of the same thng but with this you are really stuck to one sound at a time recording them.

  • thanks alot m8

  • @Zkrudriverz: You should be able to go on Roland's website and find a driver download, if you are on a mac, you shouldn't need to use the CD.

@theoldschoolraver: I am not sure how you use the synth in Ableton since I have never used Ableton, only Cubase. I think it should be a very similar procedure though. About arps, I have no idea also as I have not tried them out in a DAW yet. I'm sure your DAW should have some sort of Arpeggiator? Try using that as a workaround.

  • can i install the synth without the CD? i got the synth but nnot the CD

  • great tutorial! but how to use the same SH201 in Ableton??? im totally stuck :((( the only 1 synth i have problems with....

and also there is no possibility to use arpeggios....i draw a long note and it doesnt play an entire arpeggio, only this sustained note...

  • Your amazing thanxxxxx

  • Ah ok, I will put full instructions in the description in a minute, are you using an audio interface or the synth itself as a sound interface?

  • cheerz m8 but i dont seem to get a sound out of my speakers only visual

  • @miko1989100 Make sure your outputs are set to your speakers in VST connections. If you see audio coming in on the Input but not the audio channel when you play the MIDI, then monitor the audio and midi channels. Set midi channel to 1 and program to OFF, if all is visible and in outs but still no sound, its your speakers, so set the right outs in VST connections.

  • well thx again m8 i found out that when it starts u have to adjust the audio driver I set it to the hardware instead of the ASIO4ALL & it worked verygood program by the way
