haha yes I have I use it all the time, but for a Metallica song like this you have to downpick as often as humanly possible to get that metallica chunk. Alternate picking just doesn't have the same effect.
i have been play for 15 years and own a usa strat and one of these i absoulutely love it. sounds awesome though when turn up to band levels pickups feedback. a mate brought a epi and put gibson 57 pickups in it so i got his epiphone pickups and put in my j&d and problem fixed. I will say finish chips and dents real easy. I heard legacy les pual copies are even better i reckon i try one of them next. would never sell my J&D though.
Well this one is just the cheap 400 dollar bolt-on I can't speak for any of their higher end models. I love it but it has a lot of flaws and really only sounds good at lower volumes.

When James records and plays he uses all downstrokes as much as humanly possible. So yes, to help recreate that "tone" he's playing correct.
