The problem with this guy's opinion of Space Balls is he's expecting the whole movie to be about Star Wars (which it is not). The movie was a general spoof on all the major science fiction movies around that time. If he doesn't have that mindset, of course he wouldn't be happy with it.
I really think that Lucas didn't know what he was getting himself into in 1978 as he did with the Family Guy and the Robot Chicken parody. Even Mr. Lucas himself hated it and was been quoted saying how bad it was in the trailer for the Robot Chicken parody. CBS should not have gotten a hold of Star Wars, they should of have been thankful they succeed with Star Trek. Space Balls - Horrible, and you're right the people at FG and RC love Star Wars and know what they're doing.

He forgot Hardware wars! It was one of the first (made in 1977, the same year as Star Wars) and is considered one of the finest. I still laugh my ass off when I see C3P0 as the Tin Man or R2D2 as beeping hilariously as he did.

Whilst I quite like Spaceballs, the guy was right - it was a superficial parody of the films. The best spoofs are those done by geeks who know the trilogy inside and out (like Chad Vader :) ).
I agree, the robot chicken parody was better than the family guy parody... don't get me wrong the family guy parody was good, but the robot chicken parody was far more clever...
