Apparently "Aerith" was 'supposed' to be the correct translation, but it was translated to 'Aeris' by 'mistake'. This is because the Japanese don'th have a 'th' in their alphabet, so Aeris and Aerith sound the same in Japanese. The guys in the translation department managed to translate Sefirosu into Sephiroth without any problems though so I wonder why they made the 'mistake' with Aerith. (Personally, I MUCH prefer the Aeris spelling to Aerith).

Cloud never took his sword and ran off with it... When Zach was nearing his death in Crisis Core, he gave the sword to Cloud for him to always remember Zach. Zach was the Soldier First Class. So, Cloud "assumed" his role.

They were probably going off of Zack's death in the original game, not Crisis Core. In the original there is no dialogue after he's been shot, and Cloud does just take the sword from him.

@BurnRGO619 exactly, the way i see it, the only reason that aeris and cloud were kinda close is that cloud probably still had some of zack still in him from the experiments, which was why he thought he was zack the first go around, so psychologically he was interested in aeris because zack was, but later when cloud becomes himself by remembering his past he realized how important tifa was to his history and how of coarse how awesome her boobs are :D
