  • I agree that CLERKS is Smith's best. Only one I have't seen in your list is WITHNAIL & I, though I've heard great things about it for years. THE KING OF COMEDY is brilliant. Scorsese's best work was in the '80s IMO.

  • Ooh, you MUST see Withnail! The most quotable film there's ever been and it spawned a legendary drinking game too!

  • Glad you like 'Talk to Her'. I love Almodóvar, but nothing of his quite affected me like this. I was speechless after watching it. It's just extraordinary.

  • I love the Redux edition. I share the scepticism of those say that so many 'director's cuts' just serve to remind us why they were edited in the first place, but the extended scenes in AN Redux flesh out the political context of the film, and provide an interesting change of pace.

  • 01. All The Presidents Men [Pakula, 1976]

    02. Alpine Fire (Höhenfeuer) [Murer, 1985]

    03. The Apartment [Wilder, 1960]

    04. Apocalypse Now [Coppola, 1979]

    Cheers for the commentings!

    09. Catch 22 [Nichols, 1970]

    10. The Celebration (Festen) [Vinterberg, 1998]

  • Catch 22. I'd forgotten about that Brilliant, vintage Arkin. Have you seen 'Simon'?

  • I haven't, no - I'll have to check it out. Incidentally, I always preferred Catch 22 to the critics' favourite, MASH.

  • 11. The Conversation [Coppola, 1974]

    12. The Boat (Das Boot) [Petersen, 1981]

    15. Dr Strangelove [Kubrick, 1964]

  • "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!" hahaha

  • Surely the funniest line in motion picture history, and (like a lot of the best jokes) a reminder of our mortality.

  • 16. Dogville [Trier, 2003]

    17. Drowning By Numbers [Greenaway, 1988]

    19. The Godfather [Coppola, 1972]

    20. The Godfather: Part ll [Coppola, 1974]

  • I was well disappointed by Godfather II. Not a patch on the first one.

  • Blimey! You must be the first person I've ever heard say that! I had to re-read it, having assumed you'd said the familiar, "the Godfather 3 was a major letdown".

    22. The Grapes Of Wrath [Ford, 1950]

    30. Nashville [Altman, 1975]

  • 'Life of Brian' is by far my favourite piece of Python.

  • There's no contest, is there?

  • 'There's no contest, is there?' was intended as a response to your 'Life of Brian' post.

    44. Three Colours: Blue (Trois Couleurs: Bleu) [Kieslowski, 1993]

    45. Three Colours: Red (Trois Couleurs: Rouge) [Kieslowski, 1994]

  • 'Talk to Her' was great. I saw it in New Zealand, if I remember correctly!

  • I can't narrow it down to 10, so I'll clog up the comments board with 50 (and in alphabetical order, to save on the 'tearing hair out' problem):

    46. Together (Tillsammans) [Moodysson, 2000]

    47. 12 Angry Men [Lumet, 1957]

    48. The Wages Of Fear (Le Salaire De La Peur) [Clouzot, 1953]

    49. Withnail And I [Robinson, 1987]

    50. The Year My Voice Broke [Duigan, 1987]

  • A tasty list (although I pray I never have to sit through soddin' 'Star Wars' again) - the majority are among my faves. Interesting you should mention 'You, the Living'. I'm off to see it at the Stoke Film Theatre on the 18th.

  • Ah, Star Wars is my childhood.

Enjoy 'You, the Living', it's a great film.

  • This is SHIT!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, what a well considered comment. Would you care to elaborate?

  • More good picks. Pulp Fiction, The Matrix, Clockwork Orange and The Wicker Man are all up there for me.

    Cheers for the comment.

  • in no order empire strikes back pulp fiction the haunting (60's) logan's run wicker man clockwork orange the matrix scarface ( i don't like rap so i like for different reasons) the party a bout de souffle
  • The Deer Hunter

    Rushmore

    Boogie Nights

    Goodfellas

    Apocalypse Now

    The Godfather

    The Odd Couple

    The Shining

    Dog Day Afternoon

    Blade Runner

  • Good picks. Yes, Rushmore and Goodfellas would definitely be in my top 20.

  • Apocalypse Now's the second greatest war film ever. My favourite's A Clockwork Orange, and by the way, Deer Hunter's what i thinks the best De Niro film. And i'm from Sweden too.

  • Yeah, Clockwork Orange is a great film. I walked around the campus of Brunel University in West London, where a lot of the film was shot, when I lived nearby.

So are you a Roy Anderson fan then?

  • OOO, I LOVE Platoon!! Great choice!

OMG.. I LOVE Bobby D. too!! HE HAS MADE SO MANY GREAT FILMS! The Deer Hunter is actually one of my Faves! Ever see it?!

  • Yeah, I love the Deer Hunter. I think, after all, it probably IS my favourite DeNiro. Read what I put in the description box!...

    Cheers!

  • that was a spot-on impression...of myself. I've seen all those except your #1. I think I saw Naked. anything with "Naked" in the title, I watch.

  • Ah dude, cheers. I don't think it was that good - you do you much better! Have you seen Naked Lunch? THAT's pretty gross. Naked Cheerleaders Ticklefight 2 on the other hand...

You should see Withnail & I. It's fookin' funny and jam packed full of swearing.

  • Sadly, I've only seen one of those films; Star Wars :(

  • OMG, you must rush out and rent the others. Now, now, NOW!

  • Robert De Niro is awesome. I really have to check out Dr. Stranglove cause I hear how good it is. It's going on my Netflix right now.

  • Glad to hear it. OMG, it is one of THE funniest films ever made! But worryingly still rather pertinent.

  • Robert De Niro is awesome. I really have to check out Dr. Stranglove cause I hear how good it is. It's going on my Netflix right now.

  • Another Star Wars geek eh?

It's ok though, you redeemed yourself with Spinal Tap. Not that I can judge of course. I'm a big Kevin Smith fan. heh.

By the way I turned this vid all the way up to eleven!

  • It's not my fault, it's my age. The Star Wars trilogy was re-released when I was 11 years old and my fate as a Jedi Nerd was sealed!

Glad we agree on the Tap though.

  • That makes you how old?

  • 32 (but with the mental age of a 25 year old, haha)

  • I know that feeling all too well.

    I wonder if at 50, we'll still feel 15.

  • A few of those I haven't seen, i'll be sure to have a gander.

Apocalypse Now - Great choice, good film.

Good video and spoken very good ;) Keep up the good work buddy.

  • Cheers dude! Do indeed have a 'female goose' at them.

Yeah, I managed to see Apocalypse Now in the cinema when the 'Redux' version came out a few years ago. Awesome!

  • hahaha i'm kinda addicted to your vlogs... nice movie pics a few comedy's i havent watched and will be checkin' out. hahaha your voice is pretty relaxing has anyone ever told you that... :) peace jez

  • Watch them, WATCH THEM NOW!!

Cheers! Not to get into the whole sycophantic back-slapping scene, but I do so enjoy yours too. Glad you find my voice relaxing. Over here I just sound like a bloody Brummie!

  • i know know what a bloody brummie is but is sounds bad.. lol peace....

  • Haha, a Brummie is someone from Birmingham (Birmingham, England NOT Birmingham, Alabama - obviously). You're right it does sound bad. It's not the worst insult but I don't think it's ever used as a compliment!

    Peas...

  • nice imitation!

  • Thanks, I'm not so sure. Johnny sounds much cooler.

I hope he doesn't think I'm taking the piss!
