My son , bless his heart. "Mom, ah, Mom--" I introduced him to concert's. HE KNEW, heard it, first, "I'll be there in a minute." Click. HE was raised on JD, no choice, loved his music!
What JD did with his life is amazing. His interests, "things that HE believed in", he gave us his heart in SO many ways. Mind blowing, He researched, now it's up to us.
Thanks to all his family for sharing him. WHAT can we do, for each of you? In each of your hearts?
That was beautiful, John Denver always held that one note, it was so very long and powerful. He sang with such heart and soul intertwined as one. This is a nice remembrance of man, who cared so deeply for nature and had such a appreciation for all of creation.
john denver sung of gods creations and the natural rescources given to us.he sung of love and harmony of spirit.harmony with nature.he expressed a great appreciation for all of creation.it was VERY appropriate to have him co-star george burns in oh god the movie! perfect!he deserved that role, because he had that bond with god in real life. epic.his voice forced your minds eye to see the yellow flowers on the rolling green hilltop,or the trickle of a stream,or a hawk soaring over the trees.R.I.P
I saw this when first broadcast in '96, & at that time I gained a new respect for JD's vocal abilities. OHN is one of the more difficult carols to sing. To pull this off, live, & at such an early hour in the day (TTS begins its broadcast at 6:00am), is not something most singers could do. His voice had mellowed, & warmed by '96; & he nailed the song, high notes & all. Unfortunately, the voice was stilled too soon. For me, this remains as one of JD's most memorable & moving live performances.
Does it strike anybody but me that without his glasses and a little older he really looks quite a lot like Roy Rogers? A couple of my heroes! Bless you, John!
@michaeldonegan yes of course, one such as John who loved Nature, cannot help but love the creator of that Nature.God is the inspiration behind Johns many songs.
God is the silence, the stillness within us , silent but very awake.
John's voice was more than just a singing voice...it was a precisely tuned instrument. I don't think I've ever loved/love a singer more than I did John. He was given a gift and never abused it. He abused parts of his body but always held his voice to the highest standards.God loved him so much He had to have him at His side to sing for Him. He was selfish because He took him away from us mortals who loved him as much.
What a stunning voice, stunning performance and missed so so much..
I wonder if the people in the audience have seen this video or have it on tape from the program when it aired. What bittersweet memories to know you were there for his last ever performance. John Denver's talent was beyond measure.
love it! Because of John, I was inspired to do my own rendition of o holy night. no where near as good, but feel free to view it on my channel if you wish. Thank you John!
I had the honor of meeting John Denver at the Hayden, Colorado airport when I worked there in the 1980's. I had the honor of renting cars to him and fueling his Learjet. He was a kind and unassuming human being. Far nicer than most celebrities. God bless you, John, and thanks for touching our lives. We miss you.
So wonderful to hear decent music from a very decent heart. My youngest, grown son asked where the CD was that had Grandma's Feather bed on it. Raise them with goodness and they'll long for it:)
Simply, one of the purest vocal talents that ever sang a song. His guitar playing has , imho, always been under-stated, as well. John Denver truly was "a song's best friend". He's soaring with the eagles...where his heart and soul has always been.
How many of us get to do everything we ever wanted or set out to do in this life and then when it's God's will for you to pass on as we all will, you do it while doing something you love to do? That was John Denver's life and death. He was a true American hero and a great preformer. RIP John Deutchendorf
It broke my heart when I heard he died. He was one of my all-time favorites, and was a big influence on me. Even the corny stuff he did made him that much more likeable.
I saw John in a very moving Christmas concert, the Christmas before he died. I'll never forget how he sang Falling Leaves and asked everyone in the audience to hold hands. How I miss him, what a good man he was.
His was the first album I ever bought and the first concert I ever attended. Ironically I read about his death while on a flight to Las Vegas. I don't think I ever owned an album better than Poems, Prayers and Promises. This Old Guitar will resound forever in memory.
I can't help but get tears in my eyes every time I hear him sing. I agree with the person who said he is just the best singer/song writer there ever was. Where has this kind of music gone? We need more music like this now. John is so very missed.
As many of us who love John's music and grew up to hearing it! We lived in a very special era!!! If only we could rewind!!! I look at things today and wonder what happened! Although I was very upset to say the least when we lost him. I was thinking about it the other day. He lost his life doing something he loved. He was in good health. He is now in a better place! He didn't suffer! I think God said "John it's time to come home" Rest in Peace John! You've made an eternity of friends!!!!
Coming from the U.K I didn't get much chance to see him live, but through T.V. and later youtube I am able to see a truly great artist who in my opinion was one of the best live performers of all time. At least he left a string of songs with us that will last forever, not like todays so-called artists
@cornellbowmen - You are totally right - an era gone by. This man had heart in his songs. Anyone can hear it. Very few around anymore. All this stupid culture has left is holding up two fingers and rap about popping cops with a cap. But at least I can expose my children to the old shows/music thanks to people like michael here. Thanks for posting this
@cornellbowmen ......grew up listening to John....It was a special era as you said....I am glad I was a part of it....very talented man....very sad when heard of his passing....his music will live on forever for it is simple and loving and sung from the heart.
I had the pleasure of seeing John live in concert five times including his last ever concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London where he sang solo all night. My abiding memory was at a concert In Bournemouth where he walked on stage alone and sang 'Windsong', he had 2000 people in the palm of his hand spellbound by his music.
I was sat in the front row of a theatre when he sang 'The Wings that fly us home', truly one of the best memories of my life! R.I.P. John .
This is a great video, thank you for sharing it with all of us. It's difficult to believe that John Denver has been gone now for over thirteen years. His presence is truly missed. I never saw him sing Christmas music in person, but I was fortunate enough to see him in concert a couple of times. My first was in downtown Detroit, MI in 1975. Something he said at the end of his show always remained with me. He signed off by saying....Have a Great Life! What a nice messag e to send.
I just recently went on line to find some live versions of John. Gosh, I miss him alot. I hope they realize when they leave this earth they take a precious part of the ones that love his music. But, we keep his music close to our souls for they make us feel warm, comfortable and reflect on our past. He was a true "American" "Musician" and humble man. We miss you JOHN!!! (sincerely, David (oklahoma)) Retired Army.
i never really gave john denver credit for his vocal range, although i've always really liked his music.....but he uses his entire range totally effortlessly. thats rare amung today's singers.

John D. was an amazing entertainer! Good at songwriting, fantastic singing, good actor, wonderful in concert AND he could juggle!! ( I'll bet many of you did not know that!) GOD Blessed this man with great talent! May GOD Bless him where he is now.
Thank you for showing this video, I am a huge John Denver fan, and I have always said his rendition of Oh Holy Night was the best, and I am so glad it is now posted. Thank you again, Merry Christmas, and May God Bless!!!!
I am about to turn 67 - just 13 days younger than what John would have been. I am sure that he would have made better use of those years than I have. I would gladly have given my life for him to still be here.
@indah007 Thank you for your kind comment. We all deeply regret his tragic passing but we still have these great perfiormances to remind us of the incredible talent that he was.
John Denver was the greatest musician of this century, and maybe the greatest singer we've ever heard. Shame that he passed on so early in his life, but I'm glad for the wonderful music he left behind. RIP John
Johns dad went by Dutch and Hank. Everyone in the family called him Hank. He was a awesome guy from what my dad says. We keep up with Abe and some of the other brothers but mainly my grandpa Larry and Abe. We don't see Ron and his kids much.
@puck57.... There were 12 brothers and sisters in the Deutschendorf family. My grandad is Larry Deutschendorf, Johns Denvers dad is Hank .My dad is Johns cousin so my second cousin. I put uncle I think in the previous post but my dad and John were cousins.
@01dutchgt Okay dutchgf- so your grandfather one one of JD's uncles. You said JD's dad was Hank- think you meant Henry John Deutschenforf Sr. JD was Jr!! Of course JD's dad went by Dutch. I know JD's dad was from a large family- that's where JD would go spend the summers on the farm. Just curious- are any of JD's uncles or aunts still living from those in the Deutschendorf side- just curious if you know & do you keep in contact with JD;s kids or Ron by chance. Thanks.
@coronet72 I remember that day so very well...we watched O Holy Night in the moring and saw him perform in Washington DC that night at Constitutional Hall....shared with friends, I might add he goofed up singing Jingle Bells.....certainly a day to remember. bhoehn123@msn.com (Barbara)
I've always considered JD as one of the greatest male pop singers of a generation. Him and the Big O. I am thankful to have got to see him perform live in Park City with the Utah symphony in the 90's and he never sung a note off pitch! Truly one of the greatest live performers ever. But he was even greater as a caring human imo. A great spirit and so missed. It seems only with time have we come to realize how special he really was.
My all time favorite song, sung by my all time favorite singer. What more could I ask. I never knew he performed this. Thank you for posting this. I am sitting here listening to this with tears streaming down my face
@michaeldonegan Oh my, I did not know he recorded such an album, I will be sure and look for it. I will definately add this to my collection. Thank you.
@57classic1 He recorded 'Rocky Mountain Christmas' back in 1975 and it is said to be one of the biggest selling Christmas albums of all time. The recent CD release has bonus tracks.
John also sings O Holy Night on his later live album 'Christmas Celebration Concert'.
aspen1987....I love listening to Christmas music any time of the year.....Especially when it's John's....Thanks for posting this....I have the copy of this cd.....love it....
@01dutchgt Hey Dutch. How is JD your dad's uncle- are you Ron Deutschendorf's grandson? I wouldn't think Ron would have a grandkid as old as you- so are you related through another relative- just curious. Thanks.
@01dutchgt Hey Dutch- are you Ron Deutschendorf's grandson or are you related through another relative to JD? I wouldn't think Ron would have a grandkid in his 20's like you. Just curious. Thanks.
@01dutchgt Thank you michaeldonegan for your post and thank you 01dutchgt for sharing your thoughts about someone so close to you and SO close to the rest of us......
I am glad you shared this Christmas song. It ended at 2:10 & that's when the detective called me to tell me my son was murdered. Thank-you for the share. Loved it very much.
jd look realy good here and I like his hair better then when he had the dutch boy style in the seventies or the crewcut in the eightys this looks good on him I think the best of any of his other stlyles he had over the years
Michael, this is indeed 1996. If you have a copy of "Christmas in Concert" John speaks of being on the Today show early in the morning and trying to hit the high note at the end.
Despite the trailer on this video, John would've been 53 years old. I think this is an earlier version. Either way, his voice is devine. What ever happened to talent? It's all "C" rap and bad language and anger...kinda glad he's not around to hear the destruction of popular "music".
Kel- the date IS correct- it was Dec. 19th 1996- it has been shown before and on a JD tribute show after JD's death they referenced it was his last Today show appearance from Dec of '96- so it is right. (Also happened to be Anna's 20th birthday as well). JD would have turned 53 in a few weeks from this recording- on 12/31 so he was just a few weeks shy of 53.
Thank you for setting the record straight. I can only report what I have been told about this clip. Otherwise, I have no firm evidence for establishing a date for this show.
I think John's voice got better as he got older...will always be a fan : (

I am about to turn 67 - just 13 days younger than what John would have been. I am sure that he would have made better use of those years than I have. I would gladly have given my life for him to still be here.

01dutchgt 1 year ago 4
@puck57.... There were 12 brothers and sisters in the Deutschendorf family. My grandad is Larry Deutschendorf, Johns Denvers dad is Hank .My dad is Johns cousin so my second cousin. I put uncle I think in the previous post but my dad and John were cousins.
01dutchgt 1 year ago 2
@01dutchgt Okay dutchgf- so your grandfather one one of JD's uncles. You said JD's dad was Hank- think you meant Henry John Deutschenforf Sr. JD was Jr!! Of course JD's dad went by Dutch. I know JD's dad was from a large family- that's where JD would go spend the summers on the farm. Just curious- are any of JD's uncles or aunts still living from those in the Deutschendorf side- just curious if you know & do you keep in contact with JD;s kids or Ron by chance. Thanks.

Thanks.

I'd never heard this sung by John before - this is amazing considering he's in his later years here.

A younger John Denver recorded this song for his first Christmas album back in the 1970s, 'Rocky Mountain Christmas'.
michaeldonegan 2 years ago
I didn't know that, thanks. Is he 52/53 in this clip?
grimTales1 2 years ago
He was just approaching his 53rd birthday.

Dutch really knew how to sing everything he took on. He was truely a champion of talent.

I totally agree!

Michael, this is indeed 1996. If you have a copy of "Christmas in Concert" John speaks of being on the Today show early in the morning and trying to hit the high note at the end.
Keep the great clips coming!

Thanks Roger. I will ceretainly listen again to 'Christmas in Concert'.
michaeldonegan 2 years ago
Despite the trailer on this video, John would've been 53 years old. I think this is an earlier version. Either way, his voice is devine. What ever happened to talent? It's all "C" rap and bad language and anger...kinda glad he's not around to hear the destruction of popular "music".
kelroost 2 years ago 2
Kel- the date IS correct- it was Dec. 19th 1996- it has been shown before and on a JD tribute show after JD's death they referenced it was his last Today show appearance from Dec of '96- so it is right. (Also happened to be Anna's 20th birthday as well). JD would have turned 53 in a few weeks from this recording- on 12/31 so he was just a few weeks shy of 53.
puck57 2 years ago
Thank you for setting the record straight. I can only report what I have been told about this clip. Otherwise, I have no firm evidence for establishing a date for this show.
