We have parades in my town that only circle the city square. People who want to attend will stand in the center square or along the outside of the square. I know when I went to the PR Parade I was buying beer, and so were 1,000,000 other Puerto Ricans. Should the taxpayers put that money up? But then again, it's a ton of cops that are probably getting overtime to be out there. I'd like to see the real numbers on cost vs. revenue.

...and they cost taxpayers lots of money.
They should hold parades inside Central Park or along the West Side Highway..
and have them totally funded by the organization having the parade .

Dim wit, sponsorships, advertising, local business promotion and PR generate the bulk of the revenues at a net gain for the city, not for just the one day. Parades help to combat the idea that most the cities residents are flaming loud mouth retards like-well you. Net gain.

You also conveniently leave out how much tourist dollars these parades bring in. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade brings in tons of revenue, much more than 12 million.

hey, just fyi, it cost about $500,000 for a parade for a fallen firefighter, so not all the money is wasted, but most of it is. but i believe the money spent on our fallen firefighters is worth it

Do we throw a parade for a truckdriver that turns his wheel and dies rather than plow through the Stupid Asshole that caused the situation in the first place? NO. from an economic perspective- it's NOT worth it at all. If we lose a hundred firefighters a night, is it worth dropping $50,000,000 for them all on a damn parade? what good comes from these parades? nada.
like Bob explained, the money could be spent on beneficial things like education/libraries/police.

For your info- I'm a Master's Student at Erasmus University in The Netherlands, one of the best Economics Schools in Europe.
As Bob reiterated, Americans need to stop spending money when unnecessary. Maybe it's good for business, but it depends on WHAT kind of business it is.
Americans don't need to spend money on pretzels and beer that's inflated.
You need to check out Shadow Statistics, and realize what the truth is, VS how the Government wants you to think that SPENDING helps the economy

You didn't actually say what you were studying. If you were studying economics, you'd understand that America is consumer/service based economy, and that consumers consuming, whether you think it's good or not, keeps the economy running.

Tourists need to hotels to sleep in, and restaurants to feed them. They want things to take back home, they will shop while in the city, and spend money touring the sites.

I know when I went to the PR Parade I was buying beer, and so were 1,000,000 other Puerto Ricans. Should the taxpayers put that money up? No, but are you sure the tax revenue, subway fares, restaurants, hotels, etc doesn't make up they money the city spends? I'd think they're at least breaking even. But then again, it's a ton of cops that are probably getting overtime to be out there. I'd like to see the real numbers on cost vs. revenue.

I think parades should stay but the money should not be put on the city. I never knew that the city pays for all the major parades and that isn't fair because what dictates then which groups deserve a parade? I hate paying property taxes. I've always thought that was bullshit. Once you buy property, it should be yours, no if ands or buts . Now the only way i can see it taken from you, is if you have something like a meth lab on it, but that's a whole other thing. I don't live in NYC but if I did that would be MY $1.50 per year for something I get no value out of unless I watched the parade.
It is that type of thinking that has let the federal government nickel and dime us into a 13 trillion debt with 107 trillion in unfunded mandates that we have to pay each year.
Why doesn't the city charge just the parade watchers $1.50 or more instead of everyone in the city.
