I'm no expert, but I thought the human species line splits off from lizard-like creatures before they evolved to dinosaurs and goes instead into mammals.

Such a catastrophe was followed by genetic re-design of many surviving species.
The meteor theory is the result of theophobia. The most obvious explanation for extinction is the flood that fossilized them.
