The women are carrying umbrellas because they don't want to get any sun as a tan in China is NOT desirable as it connotates that you are a farmer working out in the sun as opposed to white skin that means you live a life of leisure INDOORS.

In the west if you have white skin it means you are stuck in the factory or cubicle all day whereas a tan means you can lounge around the sun all day.
