Before there was MYSTERY! on PBS, There was Armchair Thriller in UK. I wasn't born yet at that time. I'm from Middletown,Connecticut,USA & when I was 8 years old my late Grandmum gotten me into British Murder Mysteries. I still love a good British Murder Mystery. Both "Quiet As A Nun" & "The Limbo Connection" we're shown on MYSTERY! on PBS in USA in early 1980's at time legendary actor Vincent Price was host.
The thing I remember is after seeing the opening credits my dad would say; "Right son its time for your bedtime. You have school tomorrow".Sleep!!? How can I sleep after seeing that face??!!I swear he did that on purpose!! That is still,to this day,one of THE scariest opening credits for a show I've seen :+O
I was one of those petrified children!!!!!!!!! That blood on the chair has stayed with me for years, scaring me!! Seeing it again has bought it all back!!
Nowadays this slot is probably occupied by Coronation St or Emmerdale. This is all ITV seem to churn out in the mid evening slot now, boring soaps for boring women with no imagination.
This trailer or rather that red screaming face would absolutely terrify my kid brother who was 6 years old at the time...so much so, he would not go to bed alone, and would have absolutely horrendous nightmares.
As a kid I got these trails mixed up with the actual (slightly less disturbing) title sequence so I was always sticking my fingers in my ears and hiding my face (or hiding behind the kitchen door) when Armchair Thriller started. I would only come in when the titles were finished and I knew it was safe (until "Quiet As A Nun").
I seem to recall an ITV series called simply "Thriller." One episode "Come Out, come out, wherever you are" gave me nightmares for quite a long time. It was shown in America in the late 1970's. The scene featured a person in a skeleton suit chasing a girl through the woods. Does anyone remember this series? I was only eight or nine years old at the time......38 now. Would love to find it on dvd.
You might be thinking of the story "Buddy Boy" from the tv series "Beasts". A bizarre story from Nigel Kneale involving a dolphin & a pornographer. Although she isn't electrocuted in a swimming pool, but her death is similar.
You can buy the complete series of "Beasts" on dvd.
My God, I was still six at the time, now I'm 36. I remember I used to lie down on my mum's lap and watch this series. But the most scary bit that I still have imprinted in my memory is the faceless nun...I was TERRIFIED at the time, and still have nightmares about that faceless nun to this day!
In retrospect, Armchair Thriller was a great series... the only problem was that bloody animation. I would like to hear some explanation from someone in authority at Thames (who commissioned it) or the ITV network (who allowed it to be shown) as to why they thought it was suitable to be shown pre-watershed, as it patently WAS NOT!!!
I remember she turned the radio on and there was a report of a mass of rats terrorising the countryside. I remember the end - I doubt we will ever uncover this episiode so .. **SPOILER** for those who don't want to know .. don't read ...
The folks arrive home .. she runs to the window to try to warn them .. they get out of the car ... the scratching in the house STOPS ... and yep, you've guessed it ... screams from the people who have just exited the car, are heard ...
If I remember rightly, after that, all is quiet then there comes, the "scratch scratch" on the floorboards as they try to get to her in the house.
The rat story is called "During Barty's Party" & is not an Armchair Thriller story, it's from the series "Beasts", a 6 part series of stories by Nigel Kneale shown on ITV in 1976.
You can buy it on dvd ( as you can with Armchair Thriller, both released by Network ). The best story is "Baby", which ranks as possibly the most unsettling piece of tv ever broadcast.
Does any one remember the episode with the rats attacking the house? Its along time ago now but i seem to think it was a armchair thriller which had this episode but not sure?
I've been wanting to find this for ages ... is there a baby sitter in the house? Starts with scratching and then wheverever she walks .. the scratching stops, then resumes just underneath where she is stood?
Don`t know, but i seem to remember that the family dog left the house because of the sheer panic! I s+++ myself as a youngster after watching this ha ha.Glad you remember it aswell.Wish someone could put it up

That scene when she climbed the ladder and there was a face less nun rocking in the chair. I was 10 years old when I saw that. 40 now and I still get the shivers when I see it!
When I was six I slept in a dark room with no windows. I went straight to bed after seeing this trailer and all I could see was that screaming red face. Great stuff!
Great!!! And bloody terrifying, too!!! Having just watched all six episodes of A DOG'S RANSOM on DVD, I can confirm how great this 30-year-old series really was. Miles better than anything now. Thanks for posting these great, memorable clips, Black Nun!!!

This trailer is the single most terrifying thing that I remember from my childhood. I remember being in great discomfort watching it.

I remember watching this on ATV. There was a lot of mad/creepy telly on in those days. Today's television is boring by comparison

The poor, poor little dog!
Once seen , never forgotten.
The end of each episode with THAT music and THAT picture of THAT dog is the most harrowing thing in a tv programme I've ever seen.
Keep telling yourself , the dog's an actor, the dog's an actor.....
Where's me pills!
