SAFECITYUNITE, this is for you;pay them the equivalent of about 500years of salaries, pay for pain and suffering for EACH generation, hang a couple thousand of you people, whip a couple million of u,take for Atlantic ocean rides in the same conditions, have your women raped and publicly defeminized, then over-sexuallized(to look like prostitutes),lock up a couple hundred thou of u etc;then they'll go back to Africa.
Are you being ironic?! If not then: I would never dream of justifying the actions of people in the past. I do feel that the slave trade is often used as a tool for blaming people alive today for something that happened in the past. Regardless of my mixed heritage, I feel no shame for, nor do I blame anyone for what happened in the past. My European ancestors at the time were peasants. As for the "worst crime": this is still happening today in Africa and elsewhere. Like me, everyone (cont.)
.. in my family, regardless of their colour or heritage, finds the slave trade abhorrent. This is more than prevalent in the "white" branch of my family tree, as with other branches. As for Europe being built on slavery, well, the majority of Britons were either close to serfdom or city slums when African slavery was at its peak. The East India Company financially benfited Britain as a whole much more than the Africa campaigns (its cruelty has been historically overlooked in favour of (cont.)
.. the plight of Africans. I don't share in the guilt affliction of the British Raj either. But I do sometimes wonder whether Indian independence would have been so forthcoming had not the events and end of WW2 spurned a new look at fascist oppression...
It is also important to look at Europe as a whole having been built on slavery. Certainly some countries were involved during the colonial era - but not all!
Finally I'd like to reiterate that the abolition laws of 1807 were not fully (cont.)
.. enforced (by Britain - which was first to abolish slavery) until 1837, when the British navy was engaged in intercepting slave boats in the Atlantic and elsewhere. This is why this recent "memorial" (which I happen to believe is politically motivated by "PC" governance that is trying to put the slave story to bed to keep poor black people in Britian happy - but has actually angered many) is in any case premature. The real 200 year memorial (in the UK, that is) should take place in 2037(cont)
.. but what's to remember? A woman on TV recently was fighting for reparations for Black British people - most of whom moved to the UK after WW2. I wondered what I would be receiving, should reparations be in place? Do I get less than the woman next to me because she looks more African, or more because she's richer than me? I realised instantly how ridiculous it all was. Every black person I spoke to felt totally humiliated by this woman: "Get over it!" they said - whilst white people (cont.)
.. seemed to be thinking: "Shit. Have I done something wrong? Have I hurt these people because our skin colours are different?" They were quickly reassured by black people who said things like: "What's it got to do with you?" I thought: "That is right. Nothing. Nobody alive today chose what happened in the past - not slavery, holocaust, ancestors nothing." I still joke that I want my £5 though, and that the Italians owe me for what the Romans did in Britain.
