  • I have to sing this tomorrow. Can you say "intimidating"?

  • @DeathofRogue How did it go?

  • In case no one noticed, this is the melody to "76 Trombones"

  • @isotope526a1 No, I didn't notice. But near the end of the movie, they blend the two songs together. Did you notice that?

  • @isotope526a1 yeah that's true, just slowed down and with different rhythms :) just makes marian and harold's romance that much sweeter.

  • Thought this was just a hokey film back when it first came out. But, Now this is a great one and a huge favorite. Wilson probably was around to see this era disappear, but he captures it all with obvious love, affection, and knowledge of the times, and great great songwriting. The music sort of melds together into one great piece. An "Our Town" with music. This is Wilson, no dynasty, but one brilliant piece of work for all of us. Thank you.

  • 02:28 - 02:49 What was with the cup on the windowsill? What was dropped in it? What was the significance of it?

  • @stevenscottoddballz Hi! This is Monique Vermont...The cup is for the coin that Amaryllis is paying Marian for her piano lesson.

  • @artofdanceacademy

Oh, WOW! ANOTHER star replying to me! Thank you! Thank you also for the answer to my question.

  • i love this movie shirley jones is such a great singer,i wish they still made movies like this:)

  • What a classic. Nobody will remember half the pointless films made these days, but this movie and it's beautiful musical will live on forever.

  • just tried out for this musical todayy and this was our song it was so difficult:/

  • This was a great musical! I love Shirley Jones. Ronnie Howard was so cute. What happened to that little girl who played Aymarills? Too bad they don't make these musicals anymore.

  • @musicbuff9 Hi! Monique Vermont is here in Virginia Beach and on Face Book at artofdanceacademy

  • why did she pick up an empty cup?

  • This song is basically a variation of Seven-Six Trombones!!

  • shirley jones' voice kind of reminds me of butter... is that weird

  • Meredith Wilson wrote the music for The Music Man when Broadway show music was written to be so beautiful with haunting melodies.

  • Musicals today are so awful... All looks and no sentiment. Can't anyone write like this anymore?

  • What ever happened to beautiful music like this?

  • My great grandmother, grandmother and my mom and now myself all love(d) this movie. Ever since I was 3 i have been deathly afraid of thunderstorms, when a bad stormed rolled in my mom used to sing this song and "Wells Fargo Wagon" bc that was my fav. song to me to help calm me down. It's no wonder that besides RENT this IS MY FAVORITE MUSICAL!

  • @countrywillneverdie Me too :) I always cry in this song. I miss my mum so much

  • Yes Meredith Wilson wrote one tune and used it upbeat (76 trombones) and slow, (Goodnight my Someone). He was a musical genius!

  • Beautiful tone. Beautiful. Rich and beautiful.

  • simple and beautiful!

  • Shirley Jones seemed to have perfect vocal technique, too bad she is a republican.

  • @kevyjo LOL!

  • @kevyjo And too bad you're a bigot.

  • @swarze If you ever get the chance, rent a DVD of The 10th ( NOT the 25th ) Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables. The show is full of songs that use the same 3 or 4 themes. It sure made it easy to get the music stuck in my head. GREAT musical....

  • @swarze They did that on purpose cuz later in the show she sings that song while Harold is singing 76 trombones

  • I only just noticed, that this song is almost exactly like SEVENTY SIX TROMBONES. Same basic melody. How come it took me so long to notice this???

  • I love this song..."sweet dreams be yours dear if dreams they be.."" lovely sentiment...it'd be nice to get a little of that back in mean spirited America these days...care for our fellow citizen and wish them well!!

  • This song is framed like a American cameo--it takes on the charm of a hot summer night in Iowa--perhaps with a piece of chocalate cake and a glass of buttermilk. Ms. Jones sings and acts it to perfection.

  • the little girl can't really sing, but Shirley is freaking amazing, as always :)

  • @pinkvespa95 Aw! Hi! from Monique Vermont....They actually wanted me to sing it that way because they did not want me to take the focus away from the star.....That's silly because she had such a gorgeous voice...It's all good....

  • was shirley pregnant in this scene??

  • @pinkvespa95 I think so. She found out 3 months into production, so they kept cinching her up with a corset and adding bows and frills and stuff to try and hide it, lol.

  • My entire fifth grade out of the school preformed this. I was lucky enough to get Marian's part. Shirley Jones has been my idol ever since then(:

  • They show Emarelis from the front, and then then show her from the back, and there's a piano in front of here. So how did they get the first picture with a piano in the way?

  • @FirstClassSkeptic Hi! from Monique Vermont...This is a great question: They actually built a "back-less" piano and the camera shot from the back:.

  • @artofdanceacademy Oh. I thought maybe you were just playing a keyboard, and the sound was dubbed in. That would seem easier to do.

  • This is a beautiful song sung to perfection by Shirley Jones, a true classic to be remembered for ever, i am auditioning for this musical tomorrow, and singing this song, wish me luck!!! And a "classic" award to Ms. Shirley Jones

  • Ah, the days when you needed true talent to be in movies... and I'm a teenager saying this!!!

  • I wish they still made movies like this

  • @Sartye me too

  • She is a stunning women!!

  • Piano lessons were a quarter?

  • @NurseBevable The story takes place in 1912. The buying power of a quarter then would be several dollars today. Remember a new car in 1912 cost about $500, so piano lessons for a quarter were a good way to earn extra money. Piano lessons are still a good way of earning a little extra cash on the side.

  • We did this musical in November, and I had never listened to this song before...now I'm in love with it!

  • this is a beautiful song...... :,)

  • She has a gorgeous voice. (One of the related videos is Julie Andrews singing Feed the Birds... I guess Youtube puts excellent singers together :P)

I have to say... I prefer Kristin Chenoweth's version, not because I think she's BETTER, but I just like the sound of her voice a little more. I also like her ending note more, even though I'm pretty sure it's the same note ;) I'll check in a minute.

  • This is like my favorite musical of all time. One of the first shows I ever saw<3

  • Whats the name of the song where marian is fighting with her mother? plz answer

  • @iloveJapanese1

It's called If You Don't Mind My Saying So

  • O.O i have to learn this song for voice lessons. geez i hope she brings down the pitch

  • did you notice -- it has the same chords as in 76 trombones ---just done as a waltz, not a march !!

  • I'm in the 6th grade, and I'm doing the broadway version of this movie. I play Harold Hill. Is that a good part?

  • @mw2rlz818 that is an awesome part! Keep it funny and alive! Congrats!

  • @mw2rlz818 Yes! You are the male lead!! You are one of the most important people in the play!! Congratulations!! And good luck!

  • @mw2rlz818

It's the best part in the musical. The problem with the part is the first person to perform it on Broadway ruined it for everyone else. I'm speaking of Robert Preston.

Your director will tell you about Harold Hill. He is a con man, but Meridith Willson has written the part so the audience just likes him.

I don't know where you're from but if you're from Iowa, that would be great!

Hey kid -- learn to play pool, and break a leg.

  • @mw2rlz818 oh f*ck yeah! Congrats! u got a lead part!

  • i love shirley jones voice she is so pretty to:)

  • I watched this movie in my chorus class and ever since then I havent watched it again but I've really liked this song and I listen to it and sing it all thee timeee!!!!!

  • My favorite movie ever!!

  • she has a beautiful voice

  • I love this song and I love this movie. I'm proud that this movie is based on my town.

  • Beautiful singing

  • Who is the young girl playing the piano in this show?

  • love it! :)

  • This is my song for Vocal Solo Fest(:

  • My favorite song from this show (yes, I'm an old softie...)

  • this song and 76 trombones r the same song only faster true

  • She's amazing....Beautiful voice and looks to kill <3

  • @eclipsedheart93 did u know that this song and 76 trombones r the same song just faster???

  • @southparkfanatic101 Lol that's awesome:)

  • @southparkfanatic101 I never noticed that before--its in the same key and has almost the same melody!! Good song sleuthing!! One wonders if Willson consciously did this or not.

  • I forgot the little girl gets to come in at the end there and steal the whole song...

  • @ivelosthewilltolive Hi from Monique Vermont. I played Amaryllis...Thank you for your kind words....

  • NYSSMA IS GUNNA GO GREAT!!!

  • not Shrley's voice dubbed

  • Nope. That really is her singing. Jones was a talented vocalist that was classically trained.

  • ahaha cool this came out the same year my mom was born!

  • this is the first time i saw this..used to hear it in in Ally Mcbeal. Love it! ;)

  • God I have to sing THAT for the audition. I forgot how hard it was to song...

  • @SpazMaTaz44 SO DO I. I HAVE IT FOR AN AUDITION TOMORROW

  • that is one odd looking kid.

  • @spritey0 Ya' got that right. She's always creeped me out. But it was excellent casting. Probably intended.

"We needs a strange looking kid to play the offspring of the star." Rodney Allen Rippy was the wrong race.

  • my elementary skool did this movie and i got the marian role and i had to sing this song.. i had to memorize it and sing the correct notes exactly , i had to kiss a guy and he liked me wen i had a bf and they were best friends, then the worst part i had to kiss 2 guys ..... not just one 2 but tht is wat i get for being an actor ... i was only 10 ! so embarising i had to infront of over 600 people a day !

  • You know... I know I'll probably be lynched for this opinion, but... I think I like the more recent version, with Kristen Chenoweth much more than this. I mean, Shirley Jones is a superb singer, to be sure, but I think that Ms. Chenoweth is better. Besides, this version can't even keep a consistent tempo, while the newer version can. And I can't help but notice that Ms. Jones seems to miss a lot of notes, while Ms. Chenoweth's performance is near flawless.

  • @sirrliv i agree.

  • @sirrliv Shirley uses a lot of what we call "rubato" or, as I like to call it, "Schmultz." Lots of drawn out notes, pauses, fermatas, etc. ...kind of to the point of ridiculous at times. Beautiful in some ways, yet kind of sickening in others. I see your point. I would rather sing it in her style (as opposed to Chenoweth's), but I would leave out a lot of the schmultz. Oh, and, I'd prolly go ahead and hit all the notes correctly too. =P

  • @ruthanastasia If, by drawn out notes, you mean she holds them for the time value written into the melody, then yes, she doesn't cut them off short. No offense, but I sincerely doubt you are a more talented singer than Shirley Jones.

  • @ruthanastasia Those in a musical, need to be able to act as well as sing... it's not all about the singing. In part, I think it's also about the time... the year it was made.

  • @sirrliv Surely you've got to be kidding! The tempo is varied in this number to artistically emphasize certain passages and sentiments, not merely march to a metronome like a band organ. As to missed notes, again, you must be joking!

  • @nashtwin8 No sir, I'm not joking at all. I can understand the tempo being varied for artistic reasons, but musically, the sudden speed-ups & slow-downs just don't work. Go back & watch the modern version & you'll see that Chenowith also varies the tempo, but in a much more tasteful way. Also, Jones really does miss quite a few notes, whereas near as I can tell Chenowith's performance is nearly perfect. Sorry, but I still prefer the newer version.

  • @sirrliv Please remember there's trouble in River City.

  • @etbella3 Trouble that rhymes with discord.

  • @sirrliv

Everything newer is always better, huh?

  • To all the people who keep performing this musical, Bravo!

  • we are doing the music man for my school choir

  • Yes I Am Lol ^_^

  • The maturity and development of her voice since "Oklahoma!" is so apparent....she is one of a kind;-) Thanks for posting this.

  • oh my lord .... I thought nobody could do a better job than Kristin Chenoweth... I still love her version... but this one is heaven

  • Wow

  • I get to play Amaryllis in the play next year. I am so excited!

  • @PianoLuver12 Hi from Monique Vermont...I played Amaryllis in the original movie....I'm glad you got to play this part!

  • in Musical theatre this year im singing this song to try out for her ^_^

  • i <3 this movie and song :)

  • A real nostalgic song and one which carries a lingering memory for me. Thanks for uploading a portion of the classic movie.

  • @viclyn100 Really? so im i!

  • im in the music man right now playing amaryllis and it is so much fun!!!

  • I watched this in music class because my music teacher got fired cuz he hit a kid and threw one across a table

  • @abruhaha -- I love Youtube comments ...

  • @maddymud XD no it just so happened to be a rumor. He came back the next day

  • I sat next to Shirley Jones at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles when her son Sean Cassidy gave a concert there. She was incredibly beautiful and as charming as anyone I have ever met.

  • @hoytchristmas She is still a beautiful woman, and a hell of a voice she has. Have you seen Carousel or Oklahoma (I mean who hasn't really)? Fantastic!!

  • wow amazing!!!

  • in the begining the girl kind of freaked me out no offense i love this song

  • I miss her! I love my great auntie! I haven't talked to her in months! Thanks for reminding me!!!!

  • @TaraEN102 Shirley Jones is your great aunt??

  • @DorisDayFanatic Yeah! <3 her!

  • @TaraEN102 Anyone else smell a troll? >_>?

  • @TaraEN102 You are so lucky! Tell her "hello" from me. =D

  • @DorisDayFanatic Haha. Okay? Don't know your name but okay. Next time I call her up.

  • @TaraEN102 Hahaha! My name's Nicki. And thanks a bunch. =D

  • i have to sing this song for choir.......it sounds nice :)

(who is singing this song? she sings really well)

  • @tisarox122

For my first assignment from my voice instructor happens to be this song. I'm not singing this piece in a choir at all. Just me myself and I.

  • hmm I don't know who I like more cheno or Jones? I guess you can't really compare the two

  • that someone is named Shirley Jones! and she is the most amazing singer ever!

  • For who that don't know this part, the little girl falls in love with a boy named Winthrop. He doesn't like her back and the little girl is sad. Then, the woman tells her to replace the name with someone until she finds her true love to replace it with. So, she sings this to say goodnight to her someone.

  • I FUCKING LOVE SHIRLEY JONES. YESSS.

  • that kid is adorable.

  • Shirley Jones is great, and most remembered for her wholesome roles. But she's a big ol' whore in Elmer Gantry.....and won an Oscar for it. Slutty and sexy. :)

  • This is a great song and show!!

  • That was my Dad's favorite show, we took him to a Broadway revival many years ago, starring Dick Van Dyke, but the film was his favorite...Robert Preston. This song, he taught me to play on an old hammond organ...I used to play it all the time. Thanks for posting this....just amazing!

  • @hollyheartdogs1 If by real, you mean the original Broadway version, then you're right. Barbara Cook was in the cast as Marian. This is, however, the original video production.

  • Thats right. And if you look at my channel I also uploaded the original Broadway Cast

  • Shirly Jones is also great in Oklahoma!

  • this definitely is the real version.

  • my choir's gonan do this : D i've fallen in love with this song slowly as we've learned it

  • she was so amazing and young in Carousel

  • I remember the first time i saw this movie...my cousin was in it at his school. i was really young too, but it just stuck with me...and it's still my absolute favorite musical. this and west side story.

  • im 12 and i love The Music Man and West Side Story

  • so? It doesn't matter if you're 12 or not :P

  • I remember in 7th grade going to this high school music man and this scene stuck with me.............ever since than at those very odd moments, I catch myself imitating this scene. Such a dreamy song!

  • Shirley Jones has a gorgeous voice.

  • Comment removed

  • The orchestration at the beginning - right where the strings first come in - is gorgeous. Ray Heindorf's work I believe, for which he won an Oscar.

  • i know! i love the music man! though since i'm a musical theatre nut it only rates fourth in my top like 10 fav. musicals, lol.

  • Yes, exactly. I have to know, what's your absolute favorite? Mine is probably Wicked, which I saw this summer. AMAZING!

  • probably annie. i LOVE "easy street". i havent seen Wicked all the way through, but i learned about it in a musical theatre class this summer and it seemed really good!

  • what are your top 10?

  • my class just watched this musical in music class and now it's one of my favorites!!!
