in my opinion old school taekwondo sparring was better than modern competition. a clear example is a video that i watched of the 1985 world taekwondo championships.there were more kicking techniques and it was more exciting to watch.
I started at 21 i got more flexibility I am not the biggest of guys or the tallest of guys but ive gain a lot of confidence in being able to defend my self taking tkd. I wish my parents would have made me do some martial art when i was younger.
@Blasckdusk u have that completely backwards; but even then thats a stereotype.@Krosova most practitioners in west train in sports version(s), this is where the craze is in it. (In the franchising) However there are plenty of schools that still teach traditional aspects, close quarters etc...There are tons of people doing TkD now; so 100xs as many you'll see that are bad or misguided in it. PS U people do realize blackbelt is only really the start right? So its moot anyway to brag about skill
Sorry but TKD is LOL for a real fight. I´ve seen black belt TKD´s getting downed by kickboxers and muay thai fighters several times. No close combat defense and no ground fighting technics. Still having respect for every tkd fighter but I don´t see the self defense aspect in this martial art.
@Krosova TaeKwonDo does introduce ground training and self defence. differet schools, like mine, may teach selfdefence against: body seige, wrist grab, knife, gun, floor exerice, etc. it depends on the teacher and moxt importantly the fighter.
I Practice Taekwondo, I am a Brown Belt ( My master told me that i was supposed to be black Belt 1st Dan already, i just didn't took my exams...i didnt feel ready).I have practiced it now for 4 years, and let me tell you....it isnt easy...when you have to deal with KOs and dealing with powerful kicks...so if you want to get in TKD....it isn't for Sissys.
I don't blame Korean who didn't watch the game itself and only watched your local media to cover up. i am a takewondo fighter and i know you can't learn from these dvd's or what so ever they claim. the key to become best is to train yourselves, and push yourself to your limits, thats what it takes to be good fighter!!
@grozde they are making demonstration of what can be done when you are attacked. they are showing counter attack moves . in a real sparring he wont be doing this for sure
@DualMuNcho if you haven't already get back as soon as possible, im a blue belt, used to train at a GTF dojang and stopped when i got a job working late shifts, 8 years later im back but its so hard to get back to where i was, my cardio is so bad its unbelieveable, use it or lose it definitely applies here
Sang H kim my hero I need advice I just started TKD again and now I wanna learn how to spar and I will like to know what anybody recommends me to do to get better besides sparring ?

@Shadowizz hey there,,i recommend you to build up your stamina first..then, you will be able to apply the sparring techniques and skills.because without stamina or lack of it, we are not able to apply those skills and techniques we have learn.when we do spar, we will get tired easily.hehe..so,besides all the basics, kickings and sparring..we also need enough stamina :) goodluck~ peace.

Bruce Lee said it right, many martial artists of his time spent too much time on the development of skill and too little on the development of fitness. He trained for cardio, muscle strength, muscle endurance and flexibilty. No wonder he was so good.
Human leg is 3 times more powerful than the average arm. If trained well Taekwondo is not useless. It's pain. And why say Karate and Taekwondo are easy? They're not. They're similiar to eachother compared to Muay Thai, But a completely different Martial Art. Muay Thai teaches you the art of killing your oponent. Karate and Taekwondo are about selfcontrol. Used to protect yourself and your surroundings. Not saying Muay Thai is for killing only but that's the main philosophy behind it. Good Luck.
@aleeeea1 Just remember. Take the best of what you've learned from karate and combine it with the "more interesting" TKD. Be a complete martial artist.
@six6sixpounder Whatever works for ya man! Each style has their pros and cons! But there are a lot of shit money making martial arts schools out there that give styles bad names, thus they produce bad students who show that they really know fuck all!
who ever watered tkd down as a sport decided to not make it a blood sport so what taekwondo practitioners focus on more is speed and technique, that is why they're great at what they do. they move like none other thats y u say their kicks r fast. plus footwork and timing in real tkd is second to none. but muay thai IS a bloodsport and is more recommended for full contact striking. who ever watered it down as a sport decided to keep its effective aggressivity. cheers.
Yes...this is a dvd teaching techniques so they wouldn't really spar because it'd be too fast and unclear for the viewers who haven't taken tkd...think before you speak =_= the reason he's not kicking him is also of that reason
In my school we do not use protection, my instructor just uses me as a pad, :p.

you want ace kicks look at muay thai, just because there not fast or flashy there more effective and if done properly they can deliver more damage :)
