  • this video is PURE GOLD!

  • that bowed bass... paul chambers was indeed a master.

  • On more than one video Kelly is sitting so relaxed in his chair, while his lines bounce all over the keyboard. One of the few modern pianist who could solo over insanely high tempos. Meanwhile, Chambers romps that bass.

  • i like to see how anyone plays with wynton's trio. and i love j.c.

    great post!

  • Wynton rolls keys like a madman in this set, such precision, his trio had it down, that's why Coltrane is mostly a bystander for this piece at least.

  • @jrl2320 he's like charlie rouse to monk in this one.

  • Very much,all Praise.

  • Very much.

  • people are mad because mr pc holds his bass a certain way...who cares, He can play classical music and jazz and groove !! I feel if you can play it whats the difference.there are some who are very orthodox in their posture and cant play to save their life.Mr chambers long live!!

  • Great to see Wynton Kelly here.

  • Super!

    Where is Miles!!!!!!

    Miles davis band without Miles!!!!!!

    haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • love paul chambers!

  • how in the HELL did this get 9 dislikes?

My GOODNESS what an excellent video! Truly inspiring!

  • wynton is unbelievable in this video! Such a unique, totally swinging monster!

  • I'll never get tired of hearing John Coltrane and Wynton is on my top ten list for piano players.

  • P.C.'s smile at the end of his solo said it all. Swing and cool. These guys are swinging hard!

  • Enjoyed this video to no end today. Wynton Kelly was my uncle as well as godfather. Seeing him here really moved me!!!!

  • what is this tune called?

  • @OthelloJerevenod "Walking" and then "The Theme"

  • @grrrroink thanks!!!

  • @OthelloJerevenod No problem man! :)

  • three amazing giants of blues and swingin'

  • p chamberzz !!

  • this is one of the most swingingest band every!!!

    Jimmy cobb my hero!!!

  • Such a balance of modern, classic, and blues in Kelly. Truly great. Underappreciated musician.

  • @astroscorp2 I agree man.Enjoyed this video to no end today. Wynton Kelly was my uncle as well as godfather. Seeing him here really moved me!!!!

  • @ramonberg Is there really a relation or are you being figurative?

  • @astroscorp2 He was my mother's only brother. I grew up visiting his house often in bklyn and going to the Centaur bar(where I could only drink coca cola!) while he,my mom and others shot the breeze

  • Underappreciated??

I don't know, at least here in Argentina he is a very strong refference

  • @astroscorp2 Wynton is a fairly APPRECIATED jazz pianist. If you want to talk about underappreciated, people along the lines of Tommy Flanagan or Red Garland fit the bill. Wynton was always well appreciated and known in his day. Tommy and Red, in large part due to the talents they supported, tended to take an undeserved sidemen role throughout their career. But yes, Wynton was a master of the blues in the post-bop period,

  • Man even the way Coltrane attaches his strap at the end looks hip as fuck. Damn.

  • Paul Chambers plays so beautifully

  • at 6:25 .. Yeahhhhh !! very good ending line

  • i love coltrane....and yes....this is walkin....is a awesome trio...

  • Wynton Kelly is just groovin!!

  • masterpiece

  • Cool! I love John Coltrane! What song is it and when was it made?

  • This song is called Walkin'.

  • Hard to even comprehend how ppl could think any of these guys couldn't read music. Most could play several instruments. Trane knew every scale backwards/forwards/sideways. Practiced 10 hours a day sometimes.

They're not like some 5-4-1 rock guitar players who have no theoretical knowledge of chord progressions, modes, scales etc.

  • Trane could read! Gosh!!! Man, people are stupid....

  • who is the drummer?

  • jimmy cobb i think he plays on the album kind of blue....(miles davis)

  • The apex in Jazz folks!

  • John Coltrane always had passion...Ravi needs to get that first!!!!

  • STOP COMPARING!

  • Nope...can't do that. When you step into the jazz arena you are weighed against great players whether they are standing beside you or the ones that are six feet under...

  • thats blinkerd viewing,,, shud be judged on own merits

  • There was very little pretense with some players. Would you see anyone now sitting in a chair that looks like it was in the studio cafeteria right before the gig and still crush it like Wynton does? Doubt it.

  • Two thumbs way up!

Paul Chambers looks so ackward on his bass, he probabaly would have been kicked out of any classical sympony for bad posture. And yet he is one of the best jazz bass players.

By the way , do any of you know if Paul Chambers was able to read music?

  • ofcourse he reads music man he was a composer and band leader , dont you listen ?

  • yes he could read music and his technique is actually very profficient look at his left hand! it's flawless.

  • Not to mention his right hand. That is beautiful.

And man Wynton burns so hot. Awesome video.

  • I don't get that. There is nothing awkward or unorthodox about PC's posture with the bass - it's practically perfect. Left hand shows no wasted motion, bow is 90 degrees to the strings and totally relaxed when playing time. Doesn't look awkward to me.

  • @drgabrielsoileau who cares even you know he was good because you replied

  • All it takes is one freaking note to know that it's Coltrane. Listen to your standard 'smooth jazz' station, and you'll be hard pressed to beable to identify any of those sax players.

  • Volume is to low !

  • pc instantly wins in my book just for soloing arco ^^

  • Almost all Bass players of that era and those that came before solo'd arco. Before people were routinely using amps, arco was the only way to play loud enough to be heard over the rest of the players (especially in big band settings). To this day, many Jazz purists still solo arco because they think amps are 'cheating'.

  • wynton is such a badass jesus christ.

  • Thank you, wig...

  • Who is mr. PC ?

  • Paul Chambers

  • Amen! God is playing!

  • Ah. Correction. It's "Walkin" haha. Which is an F blues. The other is just some Rhythm Changes, though...

  • They are most definitely both blues

  • A simple F blues... I love early Trane before avante-garde stuff... I mean... I LOVE his out-there stuff, but this early stuff just shows Tranes substance side.

  • very true

  • I don't know where these things keep coming from but somebody is doing some good work.

  • Haha @ 1:59 Love how there's a triangle on his set.

  • Chambers was so young.

  • this was a miles gig that miles didn't show

  • paul chambers il mio dio

  • stunning !!!!!!!!!! thanks

  • This is goody

  • jojojojojoojojojo...master...maestro

  • Hey Brew,

  • COOL ONE!

FABTASTIC very very cool one, SO TO SAY!

    cheers,

    carlos

  • Thanks for this jewel !

  • Paul very very very FINE!!!!!

  • JAZZ MASTERSSSSS!!!!

  • Awesome.

  • Wynton Kelly is great. The master at his best.

  • is that trane on piano?

  • i didnt know coltrane could play piano like that plus big props to ron jeremy on the big guitar

  • I love the up right BASS, bring it back!

  • paul chambers was a heck of a bass player, unbelivable timing

  • yeah and nice lines to:) my favourite

  • merci pour cette vidéo un régal!

    tout est parfait

  • Quel est le sens d"un régal" en francais? (just curious, i'm studying french, thanks!)

  • paul is the man

  • yep i agree.Excellent, heavy and in time bassist he was

  • So my question is this, when Paul smiles at Wynton at 7:24, when Wynton comes back in, is he smiling b/c they just made a mistake or b/c they just did something really cool that no one else knows about -- a musical joke?

  • I think it was because Wynton and the drummer come in bang with a hit that Paul might have been surprised at. it was so quick and hip when they came in, and not in the "expected" place perhaps.

  • i think you're right, stones. wynton kelly came in playfully with a nice anticipation (came in on the 4 instead of on the 1)

  • i always thought that he noticed some1 in the crowd that he knew

  • I thought he smiled because PC played a badass solo so he had no other to choice but to smile, the power of music baby.

  • Wynton Kelly is awesome.

  • Yes, there's a secret "jazz scale." Every great jazz musician played the same scale in every tune to create their amazing solos.

If I told you the scale, I'd have to kill you.

  • lemme guess, the chromatic scale?

  • 1 question...how do jazz players make long songs and memorize each note...i mean look at paul chambers, thats like 2 notes per second! or is there like a scale they play with

  • Hahah. They don't! Beauty of Jazz is that it's mostly improvisational when you're in a small group. You oughta pick up an instrument and learn some jazz, man!

  • They don't memorize each note. They're very aware of the chords that they are playing and know the scales and transitions from chord to chord. Add to that an ability to create new melodies from the chords and of course to do all that while "swinging" and you've got jazz!

  • why did this question get -2?

  • Mr. Paul Chambers...awesome!

  • Wynton's left hand is awesome , Keith Jarrett use this rythms too , very swingy , cool vid.THX

  • Evidence, sir?

  • The most important sax player of all time. His contribution for the evolution of jazz was inestimable.

  • Thank you goddess technology! A gem, archived for posterity -though a DVD would be nice.

  • This is available on DVD, although that wasn't the case in mid-2006 when this was posted. It's been put out by the Jazz Icons label on a DVD called "John Coltrane Live in '60, '61 & '65". This is the from the '60 portion.

  • Wynton Kelly might be the best blues pianist ever

  • comparing pc to jimmy garrison-

    apples and oranges

  • Jimmy Garrison does a much more insane solo on Mr. PC... Live in Paris, on the Paolo Label

  • Does anything swing harder than this? That Wynton Kelly dripped swing through his skin - most effortless keyboard master ever. Passed away at a shamefully young age.

  • Love Wynton`s playing. Great post.

  • paul would walk you to the moon. One of the best,if not the best, walkers on bass

  • Nothing beats this. Man, swing just feels good. This was excellent. Anyone have a DVD of this?

  • It's on the Jazz Icons "John Coltrane" DVD.

  • incase your wondering - the tune's name is "Walkin'"

  • Miles called WK "the genius." Anyone about to contradict Miles? Just wonderful to see the genius in action, in such exalted company - thanks.

  • That's Countdown isn't it?

  • to t.r.---i think its mulgrew miller

  • That is definatly not Mulgrew- he was only 12 when coltrane died. They never played together.

  • Everytime I watch this, I get chills at how these guys swing!!! WOW!!!!!!!!

  • wynton is so underrated--one the the best post-bop players ever

  • Yes, I love his 13-chords behind Miles around 1958 (e.g. Freddie Freeloader), his pearly spring-and-sprung solo's, especially at frantic speed.

  • I completely agree. I love this guy. In the early to mid 90s there was a piano player who did a pretty good imitation of Wynton & made a couple of albums. Do you remember who that was?

  • man jimmy cobb played at UNF with Eddie Gomez back in January and I missed it only because I was short 5$ to buy my ticket, I was soooo pissed

  • is that "Walking"?

  • yeah

  • this didn't happen because miles was sick or whatever, this is the personel coltrane had at the time of his giant steps album

  • this is so great, love Jimmy Cobb's playing and all the others, kinda miss a cool happy sounding Cannonball Adderley solo though haha =)

  • timeless... this will be just as great 500 years from now...

  • The First mILES DAVIS qUINTET WITHOUT MILES! All the great guys just stopped playing with Miles, but they kept the repetoire on...

  • Absolutely unique!Look at the joy, respect for each other, drive and flowing phrases of Mr.Kelly, the bow technic of Mr Chambers and GodCobb/GodTrane.Who misses Miles? This is the ultimate post in music. Please take this pill 3 times a day, forever.!Thank you for posting it,Jclass. From Portugal,Joao Galante.

  • this is some serious jazz..can you just feel that groove anyone? XD

  • that was awsome

  • wonderfull!thank you!

  • damn... wynton kelly's on it!!!!

  • wyton was a genius

  • The greatest Paul Chambers!!!

  • Winton is the definition of jazz virtuosity here. HOLY SMOKES! Awesome recording, fab performances by all. In any mention of 2 musical geniuses, 'Trane is one.

  • The year, 1955. Young white cat from the wilds of east San Diego county Ca. arrives in S F fresh out of high school, Julian, pop 1200 or so. He makes friends with another young dude from The City and does some exploring. One night the find themselfs in the Blackhawk Jazz club (using fake IDs!) Get a table and enjoy some Oscar Peterson! We're noticed (young white kids!) M. Davis is there that nite, and comes to our table and joins us for a few min. what a gentleman!

  • Now by now if U take a chair like that using WKelly, the pianist leave the stage very angry...

Great musicians. The story of jazz (with MDavis too)

    byby

  • Walkin'!

  • This band is soooo tight. Wynton Kelly one of faves, no one does block chords like he does!

  • The swingingest most relaxed piano playing ever.

  • YES!

  • Yo - bro, he's got the flow. Ya know?

  • Christ, it was just my friend using my account having a little new years eve fun...i'm miles said something like that anyway =p

  • haha random shit man lol. seriously though hes one of my musical heroes. Miles i mean not that fuck lol

  • Muito bom...

  • i'm not even serious, but okay. hah.

  • this is some serious jazz..can you just feel that groove?

  • I read books on miles, never heard of him beating up people in alleys for not playing well, please. Miles admitted to hitting women and that's totally wack! All that other shit is opinion, so what.

  • ...Miles comment...in his autobiography he talks about being at a party and punching a woman in the chest. And you should know that he went to the gym and practice boxing. Yeah he was a dick...sometimes...very tempermental and moody.

  • Who's the pianist?

  • Pianist: Wynton Kelly - serious stuff.

  • paul chambers is such a badass bassist

  • Mr P.C. is a G.

and miles davis is a dick, he'd beat people up in back alleys if they didn't play well..

  • is that a fact?
