Politically, Stewart was a staunch supporter of the Republican Party and actively campaigned for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. One of his best friends was Henry Fonda, despite the fact that the two men had very different political ideologies. A political argument in 1947 resulted in a fist fight between them, but the two apparently maintained their friendship by never discussing politics again. There is brief reference to their political differences in their movie The Cheyenne Social Club.
