Thats an amazing tone...i can never get that full velvet sound....but it sounds so concentrated like its on a baritone or something? Good job. Doing this for my university audition
Thank you! I played baritone for many years before i started playing euphonium.. it has been some years since this recording was done, so i'm not quite happy with the way i played some parts now :-) but i think that is how it is when you look back at somtehing in the past. Good luck with your audition! I have just been accepted to a music university myself!
I know its been a while since I posted my last comment on this, but I did this for my music jury and got a grade of 2.43 out of 3. Only complaint was rushing on the 16th note runs.
I think you missed the part of us not being professionals - we had a good time playing it and that's what matters in the end - when you're only doing it as a hobby.
I disagree with everything you are writing in your comment, perhaps with the exception of your definition of quasi cadenza as it is basically correct that a cadenza (amongst other things) is a free solo passage that may or may not conform to the meter. However, you missed that the soloist during the intro actually is playing with the beat a bit.
the euphonium player was phenomenal, as was the flugelhorn player on the solo cues. the low brass (tubas, trombones) were good as well. all in all, an excellent performance
the trumpets werent the best...for professionals that get paid to do this they need to be more spot on...now that euphonium was spectacular....lovely sound and piece was flawless
either way professionals or not, i think you took my criticism well, and for that i say your personality is great, you guys really did a spectacular job on this piece, i know its difficulty
Is that a trumpet playing the oboe solo cues? Or is that simply the most beautiful oboe tone I've ever heard? Great euph by the way! I'm playing this as a HS senior with my wind ensemble. I'll post mine as a reply after the concert (May 15th wish me luck!)
Throughout the piece there are duet spots between the first oboe and euphonium. An example starts at 1:11. However, the first trumpet part has the cues for the solos for an optional change in timbre.
That's not trumpet. That's Flugelhorn. Do I really sound like a trumpet? :s In my defence - i had just gone from playing trumpet to playing flugelhorn. I don't sound like that anymore. I've softened up a bit.
My mistake! I was just trying to figure out if that was an oboe, and now I realize that this is a brass band. You definitely don't sound like a 'trumpet' here. It is positively a flugel tone.
Really enjoyed this, certainly the best recording of this piece so far on Youtube! I used to play this piece and you've really got the style of it nailed! Band sounds a little tired but that's to be expected with a live recording. Well done!
holy shit, your ensemble sounds good. I used to be in a band, I played french horn, but I'm pretty sure we didn't sound nearly this good. At least I didn't haha, but I was probably the worst french horn player.
Well some of the higher notes in the trumpet section were a little iffy but in terms of overall musicality it was really good. And I'd say it's harder to achieve that than it is to just play all the right notes.
My orchestra had a friend-orchestra in the netherlands. I wanted to come with my dad when the strings were going to the netherlands - but i wasn't allowed to come, cause my dad was convinced that I would get bored and ask for money to go to Amsterdam alone. He was not to far from the truth....XD
Me and my dad have both quit the orchestra now, But we've had dutch people from that orchestra over here.
Ah well... maybe next time. Then you should go on a holiday to Amsterdam. There are enough things to see and do. For me Amsterdam is nothing special anymore I even worked there for half a year.
I love this song! We do it in band =D

The begnning is marked quasi cadenza, so it lets you play with th beat abit, she didn't do that and there is not enough expresion.
