@NutellaFetischist Amen. When cops turn fuckin corrupt and can be employed by dealers, firefighters have only one job...stop fires. You can't put a bullet in fire and eliminate it. You can't handcuff it and lock it up. It's either you stop it or it kills you. No bargaining, no negotiating. Firemen are heroes.
@BIGDADDYF50 this is one of the earlier firefighter movies. plus, its so good, that universal studios themepark has a special effects demonstration about how they did the fire seen in the movie. its cooler than it sounds, you actually get to watch a fake factory go up in flames. its like your inside the factory watching every thing get consumed through a window. one more reason. despite what this trailer wants you to think. the movie is actually a thriller about a serial arsonist.

I liked the movie for what it was...a Hollywood production. I liked it so much that I ended up purchasing the real CFD Ward/Ranger 2000GPM pumper (1 of 2) used in the filming as E17 & E51. After production it was assigned to 69s house in Irving Park. The 2nd was assigned to 113s house. Currently both former CFD engines are located in southern Minnesota.
Wrong, one of the wards has been purchased by the East Norwegian Township Fire Department (Schuylkill Co., PA) in 2000. It was originally purchased by station 2, but due to a consolidation, it is now assigned to station1. A letter of authenticity was provided to the department by the City of Chicago in 2001 due to disputes with other departments around the country. The engine was used in all of the pumping scenes.

@ContainedGaming Your point? I am a firefighter and I love this movie. My friends within the department love this movie as well. We have this movie poster in our rec room. Are some of the scenes unrealistic, sure.....but no movie is 120% I still believe that out of all of the fire movies out there....and there aren't many....this one gets it right. Ladder 49 is far worse than this movie.
@dynodonfb7 My point? Well I was just making a statement that is true. My dad literally laughs at what are supposed to be dramatic and amazing scenes. The plot is goofy, it is filled with clichés, and the dialogue is as corny as it gets. I don't give a shit if you and your dumb firefighter buddies love this movie. Critics hate this movie for Christ sake. All i am saying that this movie is unrealistic and truly just plain dumb. The final scene is hilarious and just shows how overproduced it is.
@ContainedGaming First off, I could give two shits what you think about my "dumb" firefighter buddies. When you place your life at risk and go running into burning buildings or exposing yourself to health risks that can shorten your lifespan by fifteen to twenty years, then I will give two shits about your opinion. What you need to realize is, you are stating an opinion and not a fact. Just because your father doesn't like the movie, doesn't make it fact.
who ever says they always wore tanks is an ediot when this movie came out my town only owned 2 or 3 tanks and so alot of the guys wouldnt wear tanks mainly because we had no choice it was risk our life with gear on our watch somebody burn to death
I actually remember this trailer fro When I was a kid, it made an impact. At the time it seemed that all trailers has the voice-over guy saying cliched things like "one man will discover..." etc. This let the dialogue and powerful images do the talking.
P.S. How much did Donald Sutherland ROCK in this film? Answer: A Lot

Great film. The fire's aren't that crazy intense at times, but that wasn't the point. The point was to make fire a character of it's own, and the stunt work and effects are amazing, and no film will capture firefighting as intense, everything else though. Howard had a lot of balls, as did Russell and company doing most of the stunts, ps, these firefighters had very little budge, a big plot point, hence not the best equipment.
Sure the fire scenes are unrealistic, but that's not what this film is about. It's about the brotherhood that occurs within the fire service. The relationship between Steven & his wife are what many firefighters & paramedics go through. Many firefighters and paramedics enter the field because they are sick of having jobs that serve no purpose, just like what Steven was going through before he entered the service. Men,women, boys, girls are inspired to enter the greatest career field by this film.

@14Meows .......1. ITS HOLLYWOOD. 2. i dont know what kinda fire departement knowledge you have, but what the fuck kinda fireman uses an oxygen tank in a fire? and actually the part about running into a smoke filled room with no mask on...that happened, and that happened for 100's of years...read a book. the chicago fire dept didnt start wearing SCBA's (the AIR tanks) until the mid to late 80's.
@14Meows Actuly, big city firemen do get cocky because unlike smalltown departments, they dont have battalion cheifs watching over them all the time. To be cool, sometimes theyll make mistakes.
@14Meows We just referenced this movie in my firefighter training class. The only that's accurate in the movie is the actual images of a backdraft....even the turnout gear and how they wear it is wrong!
@14Meows I remember when I took level 1 firefighter my instructor joked that every firefighter should watch backdraft because it's exactly what NOT to do lol. This is just an old 90s film that's not a real depiction of firefighting operation. It's just a movie... Ladder 49 is the film you wanna watch.
@14Meows not true i was told by an older firefighter in the CFD and back in the day they did not wear packs and if you look into it now thats why alot of old timers are haveing problems cancer ect..
actually we never wore oxygen tanks, ever . yes we wore tanks with compressed breathing air but never oxygen. pure oxygen(in confined space) + fire = BOOOOOM!!!
@14Meows Dont know how long youve been in the fire service, but firefighters didn't start wearing SCBA's or at least they were not forced to wear them until around the early 1990's.
@14Meows clearly you have no idea what-so-ever what you are talking about either... you make this very evident by your comment.
" Firefighters don't run around in smoked-filled buildings without oxygen tanks and masks on "
obviously you don't realize that oxygen is flammable and with that said logic would dictate that firefighters don't go into fires with a tank of oxygen on their backs. Firefighters air packs contain compressed air, see now you learned something too....
@14Meows@14Meows clearly you have no idea what-so-ever what you are talking about either... you make this very evident by your comment.

@14Meows no we never run in wearing OXYGEN tanks air tanks yes but never oxygen tanks. you cant assume that every firefighter always follows what the NFPA says because we simply dont all the time
@awatters1993 And I'm not a BUD, fuckhead. Firefighters do not go running into buildings w/o SCBA's unless they have a death wish. They'd drop dead at the front door if they did. Ever heard of toxic smoke? That's usually what kills people in fires. My husband is a respected fire chief of over 20 years so I KNOW what I'm talking about!
@14Meows True that, back in the day when everything was wood and cotton, u could do that and get away with it, only it would catch u 20 yrs down the road. Now adays it is a must to have SCBA on even for dumpster fires. With all of the plastics and synthetics used today, it would be a nightmare running into a building without scba. I am sure there are some hard chargers out there that still do it, but there days are numbered.
@14Meows um no you dont really know what youre talking about unless you do the job, you sound like a soldiers wife saying shes knows whats up but you really dont unless youve done the job in their boots... and quit the potty mouth please - makes you sound like a 6th grader who just learned how to cuss...
@14Meows and you also dont know how chicago traditions were.... they didnt care.. they were there to get the job done.. and thats it.. look at vids of the cfd on here and you will see.. yeah it was stupid but thats how they were
@14Meows in my experience, I use compressed air tanks, rather than "oxygen" tanks, and to the best of my knowledge, so does every other firefighter in the world. At least get your facts straight. If you want to make a point about lack of realism, how about the lack of smoke in any of these fires?
People make out that firefighters are bad but they risk their lives by running into a burning building while everybody's running out so that they can save ours.
@krazyjordy who makes that firefighters are bad? I know here in the city some of them are known to steal items from people's homes - but for the most part, I've always considered them my favorite of all public service employees.
@WeHeartFilmTrailers in most cases, in people's minds, if one firefighter steals or does anything entitling bad ethics, he/she makes every other firefighter and every department look bad just by their own actions or mistakes. It is just how people think.
@krazyjordy Every single time firefighters come up in conversation, some one just Has to use that line. With all due respect, Take away his uniform and then see what direction he's running in.
@thucydidesse Google it you lazy ass! Or watch the credits? C'mon dude, I'm not a hater but the research involved in answering your question would take less than 15 seconds if you actually gave a shit.
I'm only 15 and I manage to sign up in a volunteer fire department and I gotta say at first it was ok but sometimes when my classmates ask me "why do you do it? Does it make you feel good" I reply "helping and saving people makes me feel good" Being a fireman will make you realize that you never regard yourself as a hero you just do what the job requires you to do. Cheers to all the firemen in the world. And I love this movie
i am also a firefighter os i have repekt for them really all guys doo a good job so i just want too say give the fire hell :D i can remember me first fire it was really shitt i was tired and sick me and the guy next too me said we ant go on but we knew there was a little kid in there but we couldnt save him :(
I remember when this came out but I saw this recently. I've only seena few pics that detail firefighter lives and IMHO this movie gives the best portrayal of it. I admit that I'm NOT a firefighter but I have several friends who are (on the FDNY) and it's interesting b/c they have the same mindsets of the people in this film. God bless anyone who's driven enough to do this, I dont' know how they do.
great movie, great fire fx, cool explosions, great trailer, great use of Horner's music from Glory. of all the stars in the movie, the trailer shows Scott Glenn the least ( 2 seconds ) gee I wonder why ????????? If you see the movie, you know the answer
I can't say for the fire side, but I'm a new EMT (our local Firefighters/EMTs are all one dual-service department, have to be licensed as both to join it). Even as an intern, it's very fast-paced and exciting. You see a lot of strange, unusual, and scary things, but you also make a difference in people's lives. Also a very close family with the guys at your station. If you're in a dual-service dept, you'll deal with a lot more EMS than fire usually.
I'm in the selection process for a fire department in another city, I have the written exam next month. If it's a career you're interested in, feel free to send me a message with any questions you have and I'll answer as best I can.
One of my all-time favorites! I saw this movie for the first time when I was eight. I had nightmares of backdrafts for at least a month, but if it wasn't for this movie I probably wouldn't be a firefighter today.
What? Weird because you recognize it or weird that its from another movie? They do that sometimes. Hans Zimmer's "Roll Tide" from Crimson Tide was used in the trailers for Independance Day and The Saint. Licenses expire or the studio that owns it can sometimes use it for promotional materials.
EXCELLENT MOVIE they should make more movies like this, cinemas in this days are full of crap, i mean movies with the actors making their own stunts like Kurt Russel and Billy Baldwin (THAT'S WAS GREAT) This days all accion and science fiction movies are full of CG and all that crap, i mean c'mon in this movie at least they use a real fire. Directors and Producers and Actors in this days have a lack of imagination and if there's people who know about cinema should be supporting me. Greetings
@Rancagua85 it is a great movie, but the fires in that movie ARE NOTHING like they are in real life. If you fought fires the way they do in the movie, firefighting would have the biggest need for men and women than any job ever.
I do love that movie though, regardless of its technical flaws haha
You do know there are two versions of the movie. The one that was released in the theater and on VHS/DVD and then another one that is the TV version. The TV version has several more scenes that I never saw on the VHS/DVD version.
Kudos for this post, couldn't find this trailer for longest time. Maybe someone here knows where I might find "The Flood" teaser that was on the VHS copy of The Ghost and the Darkness. (The Flood = Hard Rain). The teaser uses Battle on the Ice from Alexander Nevsky as music and makes the movie look WAY better than it actually was. It was still decent.
Great trailer, does anyone know where the voiceover at 0:15 comes from? I don't think it's part of the movie...was it done just for the trailer? "It's like organized confusion..."
Probably a cut scene (it's not even on the SE DVD so I don't know what the scene actually is). I did notice that similar dialog from that scene was in the movie that John Travolta was, about fire fighters (name slips my mind). I think they took the cut scene and re-wrote it for that movie.
I believe it is the scene where Jack tells the guys "we got one" while talking into an intercom box. I never saw that in the movie, but it is at 1:33 into the trailer.
That's something that Ron Howard thought of actually. Because Chicago is geographically situated on the Eid-Cart continental plate, smoke emitted from building fires is actually pulled into an alternate universe, where almost 99 percent of the population are unemployed voice over talents with missing front teeth. Kind of weird you know, being a Chicago Fire Fighter.

@14Meows Actuly, big city firemen do get cocky because unlike smalltown departments, they dont have battalion cheifs watching over them all the time. To be cool, sometimes theyll make mistakes.
railrider51 1 year ago
@14Meows We just referenced this movie in my firefighter training class. The only that's accurate in the movie is the actual images of a backdraft....even the turnout gear and how they wear it is wrong!
xtremehardy388 1 year ago
@14Meows I remember when I took level 1 firefighter my instructor joked that every firefighter should watch backdraft because it's exactly what NOT to do lol. This is just an old 90s film that's not a real depiction of firefighting operation. It's just a movie... Ladder 49 is the film you wanna watch.

@14Meows not true i was told by an older firefighter in the CFD and back in the day they did not wear packs and if you look into it now thats why alot of old timers are haveing problems cancer ect..

@14Meows obviously you have never talked to an "old timer" chicago fireman. fan.

@14Meows
actually we never wore oxygen tanks, ever . yes we wore tanks with compressed breathing air but never oxygen. pure oxygen(in confined space) + fire = BOOOOOM!!!

@14Meows hey bud we dont use oxygen, its kind of explosive..just an fyi
awatters1993 1 year ago
@awatters1993 And I'm not a BUD, fuckhead. Firefighters do not go running into buildings w/o SCBA's unless they have a death wish. They'd drop dead at the front door if they did. Ever heard of toxic smoke? That's usually what kills people in fires. My husband is a respected fire chief of over 20 years so I KNOW what I'm talking about!
14Meows 1 year ago
@14Meows True that, back in the day when everything was wood and cotton, u could do that and get away with it, only it would catch u 20 yrs down the road. Now adays it is a must to have SCBA on even for dumpster fires. With all of the plastics and synthetics used today, it would be a nightmare running into a building without scba. I am sure there are some hard chargers out there that still do it, but there days are numbered.

flattracker68 11 months ago
@14Meows in my experience, I use compressed air tanks, rather than "oxygen" tanks, and to the best of my knowledge, so does every other firefighter in the world. At least get your facts straight. If you want to make a point about lack of realism, how about the lack of smoke in any of these fires?

@14Meows By the way, they are not Oxygen tanks...SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) contain normal breathing air, not oxygen.

@bumppo45 Correct: its same composition as normal air 21% o2 , 79% rest.
Closed breathing device do have a pure o2 bottle inside. But that was not featured in this movie.

People make out that firefighters are bad but they risk their lives by running into a burning building while everybody's running out so that they can save ours.
krazyjordy 1 year ago 11
@krazyjordy who makes that firefighters are bad? I know here in the city some of them are known to steal items from people's homes - but for the most part, I've always considered them my favorite of all public service employees.
WeHeartFilmTrailers 1 year ago 10
@WeHeartFilmTrailers in most cases, in people's minds, if one firefighter steals or does anything entitling bad ethics, he/she makes every other firefighter and every department look bad just by their own actions or mistakes. It is just how people think.

God bless anyone who's driven enough to do this, I dont' know how they do.

for those who is a firefighter, how is it like?
SamGTA4 1 year ago
I can't say for the fire side, but I'm a new EMT (our local Firefighters/EMTs are all one dual-service department, have to be licensed as both to join it). Even as an intern, it's very fast-paced and exciting. You see a lot of strange, unusual, and scary things, but you also make a difference in people's lives. Also a very close family with the guys at your station. If you're in a dual-service dept, you'll deal with a lot more EMS than fire usually.

One of my all-time favorites! I saw this movie for the first time when I was eight. I had nightmares of backdrafts for at least a month, but if it wasn't for this movie I probably wouldn't be a firefighter today.

It's really weird that the music on here is from the movie "Glory."
burningchisox 2 years ago
What? Weird because you recognize it or weird that its from another movie? They do that sometimes. Hans Zimmer's "Roll Tide" from Crimson Tide was used in the trailers for Independance Day and The Saint. Licenses expire or the studio that owns it can sometimes use it for promotional materials.
MOCNum1 1 year ago
It was "weird" because I recognized the music. I didn't mean it to be detrimental to the movie.

not that weird, both movies had the same composer. The one the only the great Hans Zimmer!

Greetings
Rancagua85 2 years ago 2
@Rancagua85 it is a great movie, but the fires in that movie ARE NOTHING like they are in real life. If you fought fires the way they do in the movie, firefighting would have the biggest need for men and women than any job ever.
I do love that movie though, regardless of its technical flaws haha

Kudos for this post, couldn't find this trailer for longest time. Maybe someone here knows where I might find "The Flood" teaser that was on the VHS copy of The Ghost and the Darkness. (The Flood = Hard Rain). The teaser uses Battle on the Ice from Alexander Nevsky as music and makes the movie look WAY better than it actually was. It was still decent.

Great trailer, does anyone know where the voiceover at 0:15 comes from? I don't think it's part of the movie...was it done just for the trailer? "It's like organized confusion..."

bumppo45 2 years ago
Probably a cut scene (it's not even on the SE DVD so I don't know what the scene actually is). I did notice that similar dialog from that scene was in the movie that John Travolta was, about fire fighters (name slips my mind). I think they took the cut scene and re-wrote it for that movie.

TELEVISIONARCHIVES 2 years ago 4
That's something that Ron Howard thought of actually. Because Chicago is geographically situated on the Eid-Cart continental plate, smoke emitted from building fires is actually pulled into an alternate universe, where almost 99 percent of the population are unemployed voice over talents with missing front teeth. Kind of weird you know, being a Chicago Fire Fighter.
