Howard absolutely couldn't have them fired. He's tried before. There's audio of him ranting about O&A going "The company will have to choose between the two of us!", and guess what? O&A were still around.
What I don't get is, why didn't Howard accept them and push people toward them? They wouldn't have had a reason to bash Howard if he was being cool, everyone could've flourished, it'd have been great.
He grossly underestimated them (perhaps even overestimated) and it bit him on the ass.
