  • GREAT DEMO!

  • I looove The Chameleons, and like someone said before me, hipsters suck!

  • Hi stevobath! I so agree with you and believe we're both right because it's really all about the music and those who love it. Thankfully there are many Americans with good taste, sometimes too many since I haven't gotten my hands on an NME in ages and almost missed the latest Vive Le Rock. Bloody Yanks! :)

  • (for stevobath) I feel tremendous sadness and outrage when other acts from that era--good or crap are heralded and and The Chameleons get, if anything a blurb in tiny print like an afterthought and no photo. So insulting! Pardon the rant, but I do know what you mean.

  • Where's that synth coming from?

  • This is my favourite Chameleons song.

  • Comment removed

  • WOW!!!

  • man chameleons spawned hipster music crap bands but their music is unforgettable! only good music can combine elevating rhythms to deep emotional and philosophical lyrics such as this band.

  • @killforfiend How can you even associate the two groups? Where do you get your sources from? Hipsters are Industrial posers spawned by soulless white-suites pumping out crap. this is not "emo" music. It has soul and structure.

  • @ChameleonsUKfan2012 Alot of Indie bands today consider the chameleons as their prime influence or at least one of them, you can research it if you like, I know this is not "emo" music I Said that only good music can Combine elevating rhythms with deep emotional and philosophical lyrics.

  • Before Oasis, before even The Smiths these guys informed everything you listen to from emo to tachy punk. It is what it is but what it is is beyond comparison.

  • I'm an original fan as well, in fact, "Strange Times" (on wax) is not only part of the soundtrack of my youth, the music is forever. I like The Strokes as well, but The Chameleons are on a level few achieve. It's unfortunate they're so underrated, I wish they had tremendous success for all the right reasons. So much easier to feed creativity when not worrying about feeding the stomach.

  • @myraelisa But sometimes worry & strife are the breeding ground for creativity.

Los of bands have proved this. Once they make it big, the struggles gone & they end up pumping out shite! IMO :)

  • @stevobath You're right. But who knows what a little acknowledgement or recognition (songwriting award, Mercury Prize, etc.) could have done. Fans are wonderful, but appreciation from peers or "the industry" is usually better than money. I believe they were too intelligent and grounded to have become tainted or succumb to the demons. Their catalogue begining to end is so brilliant,

  • @myraelisa I agree, but in the end plaudits from peers do not make a band. Its the ability to touch real fans conciuosness in whatever way is possible.Im sure theyd rather have a hard core loyal fan base than a Mercury prize! They must be a great band as its more than viable for them to do tours in USA etc, where they seem to be better known & appreciated. Who said ALL Americans have no taste? LOL :)

  • Going to see Mark again in December at the Ruby Lounge in Manchester. Just absolutley awesome one of the best gigs I've been to in ages... and yes I was in the mosh pit

  • @Kowalskibfv

and I'm an original fan (42 yrs old) just wish I'd gone to see them before they broke up

  • @Kowalskibfv They just played in Dallas a couple nights ago.

  • @theeyeburninglight I saw them in Austin. One of the best nights of my life.

  • @Kowalskibfv My American friend went to see them in November last year, so theyre still touring.Im not sure if its the original line up though. I presumed they never really broke up more of a hiatus?

  • EXELENTE TEMA

  • The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge

    The Cure - Pornography

    The Cocteau Twins - Garlands

Most amazing albums of the 80's and possibly of all time.

    IMO :)

  • @MrMerlin87

You have very good taste in music spesh the Cocteaus

  • Great driecting from 2:04 to 2:07.

  • The Chameleons are my favorite band of all time. They keep me alive and going. Thank you, Chameleons. You motivate and inspire me.

  • The Chameleons, follow all links for one of the best bands in the last 30 years

  • @dobbdidi Why 30 years? More like since the beginning of time :P

  • I hate how bands like the killers, franz ferdinand and kings of fucking leon claim they are somehow 'post punk revival' where is the feeling in their songs or even the atmosphere? Maybe they need to realise in all honesty how pretentious they are...

  • @DesperateJournalist I can agree on the killers and Kings of leon,,, but cmon Ferdinand have very nic songs, you should listen to jacqueline.. Ferdinand are more post punk than those two combined and actually double. THE CHAMS ROCK!!!!!!

  • @DesperateJournalist Yes exactly. The 80's came around once.

  • My favorite Cham songs are Pleasure And Pain: Thursday's Child: Dont Fall.

    Great band

  • Nah Chapel Club is still better

  • I saw them back in 2000, I miss this band.

  • Mark looks so fucking sexy, my god <3

  • Serious real bands of the 80's like these should never be compared to todays bands....apples and oranges, both have merit, but one the teacher the other the student. Its all good!

  • this was one of the truly great bands.........

  • I FEEL CHEATED!!! I grew up in the eighties, attended college, got laid, got high--it is my musical casket, my emotional straight-jacket. I never heard of the Chamelons or Pink Turns Blue or the Sound or the Sounds or the Fall or Adult Net or Bill Pritchard or Comstat Angles (pre-Land) until l-a-s-t w-e-e-k (09AUG2011). I feel like a Rennasance Scholar in 15th Century Spain---everything hip and happening is like 1,000 years old (30 years old; same difference)!!! God Bless You Tube!!!

  • They sound like Interpol or vise versa

  • @joshuavalencia1 haha, as you've allready figured you chameleons stole their sound from interpool and not the other way around :)

  • @IStehSHIT

Who is Interpool? Is Interpool an 80's band? I've seen the Post-punk revivalist band Interpol and they are w-e-a-k; I will take 'She Wants Revenge' over them ANYDAY and they are the personification of 'Plastic Soul'.

  • @IStehSHIT haha i was expecting this comment

  • @joshuavalencia1 actually one of the biggest influences of Interpol is The Chameleons :)

  • busco baterista para banda de Los Angeles... tenemos lockout y nos late el kraut, post punk, y shoegaze. ahora es 8/30/11... ke onda?... tambien tocamos esta cancion de cover para calentarnos en el ensayo.

  • 7 people are monkeys

  • it's just a trick of the light!

  • amazing.

  • Stop comparing Chameleons to current bands like the Strokes that suck big time compared to them.

  • @Staticnz WHOEVER THE FUCK COMPARED CHAMELEONS TO STROKES MUST DIE!

  • @Staticnz The Strokes don't suck THEY FIIING ROCK, but they are kind off shity compared to THE CHAMELEONS aren't they. Long live post punk.

  • @Staticnz I can't even believe when they call Strokes "post-punk revival". Seriously, they got nothing on the genre, it's retarded.

  • @Staticnz The Strokes suck big time, no comparison necessary. Sorry, Julian, all your songs sound the fucking same.

  • @genet13 Spot on! :)

  • this should be in the remake of planet of the apes. Even though I'm sure that movie will suck, at least there will be one good thing about it!

  • My fav band ever. Saw them twice after the reunion early 2000 in German. Traveled from Sweden for those gigs"

  • INTERPOL ES UNA ESPECIE DE IMITACIÓN DE COPIA UN INTENTO DE ''THE CHAMELEONS''..

  • I just found my uncle's 20-something year old tape of the Strange Times album in my grandma's basement. Best post-punk band in my opinion. Terribly underrated. I'm angry that I didn't stumble upon that tape earlier.

  • They're from a town called "Middleton" or something like that? outside of Manchester. Is Monkeyland about their hometown or what's the story behind it. I suppose I can go on Home is where the heart is and look for it but if someone wants to answer for the sake of meeting other fans, let me know. I knew a few women/young ladies (teen years) who were from there.I always pictured it differently until the internet. Hulmes .. fucking depressing looking.

  • @coptersoisoi Yeah they're from Middleton, about 6 miles out of Manchester city centre but a place you'd still class as Manchester if you get me? This is what Mark had to say about it.

"By the late seventies Middleton had become a very dull and insular place to live. Although nearby Manchester has always been a fresh and interesting place to hang out, whenever I was skint, which was most of the time, I'd feel very trapped in Middleton"

I know how he feels sometimes. Suburban MCR...

  • @jason2kill Cool man. Just goes to show things in Europe and the USA are becoming more and more alike. I mean "We're all fat and stupid people" here because people became complacent and lazy. many kids from the 1970s to the 90s really slacked off in school in the US. but I'm starting to see change for the younger people now. Schools pushing for higher achievements to compete with China and such, but funding isn't there now. but that's off topic I guess. thanks for the info.

  • Ohh.. and I forgot to add that the Suburbs out here in Cali or anywhere else is just as boring. That's what I meant by being somewhat more alike. Suburbs don't want loud nightclubs and drunk younger crowds waking the sleepy communities up. I miss the big city, but now that I'm well over middle age I realize it's not for me anymore. Plus it's worth a drive in the summer into the big city once in a while; rather then living there all the time.

  • @coptersoisoi Monkeyland is about the record industry and how they got screwed over by there label

  • @TheDempster

How did they get screwed by their label?

  • Dynamics--one of the many reasons as to why these guys own.

  • i never thought id see this on you tube great memories

  • i very much appreciate the band from the early 80 until now. thanks for posting this rare document of brilliant music history

  • Thanks so much for posting this song! Always loved this band, the lead singer's voice, the evocative nature of the music . . . perfectly lovely.

  • sometimes the best bands are the least known.

  • I understand why people say that the Chameleons are underrated, that they shoud have deserved more sucess, but I guess this band is mainly appreciated by enlightened music lovers, thus unable to top the charts.

I don't wish they were more famous, I like the way they were and I can relate more easily to other fans.

  • @bernadotete amen!

  • For some reason I've only just discovered this band through a friend at work and can't believe how they passed through my musical net, an absolutely brilliant band and I feel ashamed to not have discovered them earlier. Timeless music that stands up as well in 2011 as it did when written in the 80's!

  • They come from where I live which is Middleton :D And one of my friends who is also in a band knows the guitarist. He was texting him last night when we were in the pub.

  • This was my favourite band in the 80s. It still is now.

So very underrated, so very unappreciated....yet so very deserving.

  • One of my favourite bands. (also on a side note, his hair is badassed:P)

  • Interpol blows..brooklyn posers..they is no comparison.

  • @196177 but the influence is obvious.

  • @miskiabicha check out the guitar work on Interpols "EVIL"..Almost a direct lift..the influence is very obvious..wonder if they admit that in interviews..or if that question is even asked? In the end it could only be good for The Chameleons...

  • @196177 Yes, I noted it too, Chameleons are teachers and masters he he.

  • @miskiabicha indeed! Rulers of the Universalmysticalpunkdom...

  • @196177 Why are Interpol hated by so many?

  • @MrDataCode probably cause they got pretty big?

  • "i need to know what is real" such great lyrics man

  • Geez - the Horrors lead singer ripped this off pretty blatantly on their newer material.

  • still top...

  • Remeber Loanhead!!!!!!!ps Roslin Club Ha Ha Wat a Night

  • Sheer brilliance!! Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • recently i've been listening to the chameleons, every song i've listened to i've liked.

  • @DreadDeather Hey, can I ask you why you decided to listen to them? I'm in the same boat, and truthfully I'm an interpol fan, and long story short--it lead me these guys, and Joy Division... etc. But above all, I really REALLY like this! Although I think that Script.. is overall the more 'ambient' of theirs..

  • para mi este es uno de los grupos de los 80's que mas me llamaromn la atencion, buenisimos los vi 4 veces en directo y volveria a verlos si se terciase....

  • So good dann Funky just awesome

  • 2:05 Just awesome I think they may have invented the so popular 80´s rock bit. That influence most melodic-rock bands inthe world. Thank you so much.=)=)!!

  • Interpol and the rest of the wankers copied them. They are huge.

  • the chameleons are huge bicouse they are in auer hearts sols

  • I'm so grateful that an old friend turned me onto the chameleons, otherwise I wouldn't have discovered what real music is.

  • fucking stunning!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brilliant!

  • they have always been really big in Greece! This is my favorite song by far! They are so charismatic... I totally am touched by their music so bloody much and forever...

  • que buena música :D tengo 15 años, no soy de le época pero se sabe apreciar ;D geniales!

  • @Tengocuentadeyoutub poor, pretentious life....

  • @Tengocuentadeyoutub AMAZING music, awesome lyrics, best band ever!

  • They are playing FAC251 on 12th June

  • Lol , the frontman looks like a complete douchebag in here.

  • @Tengocuentadeyoutub You're obviously an ignorant American... Listen to the music you twat. 'Douchebag' grow some balls man..

  • @Tengocuentadeyoutub You're making yourself look like a complete douchebag here :P

  • @0dxpx indeed! :-D

  • Thanks for posting Martin. Script of the Bridge has been by my side since the early 80s.

  • a rant to recant...all the things we ain't

  • I was 15, i was kicked out of many schools. my friend listened to the chameleons so i listened too. These guys saved my life, made me realise i wasn't alone in the way that i thought about things. I can't thank you enough, chameleons.

  • Un oldie des années 80!

  • LO MAS... GENIOS TOTALES!!!

  • I remember hearing this song with a british friend of mine around 84-85 in San Francisco. Us sitting in this park, drinking warm pink champaign and smoking large cigars listening to a sanyo (or sony) boom of a scratchy recording of this song, off of a college radio station.

  • @MrChameleon2010 to a boom box that is. :|

  • @MrChameleon2010 I love nostalgic memories like this. isn't life just wonderful?

  • @MrChameleon2010 beautiful...just like this song, thanks for sharing :)

  • This is amazing. Dreamlike.

  • I LOOOVE THISSS SOONG!!!! :D

  • What a feckin great song, one of the best bands ever !!!

  • excellent work

  • My fave band - saw them at 9:30 club in Wash DC maybe 86 or 87. Went backstage after to give props. Very nice people - I said I wanted to visit

uk and he told me of the great moments they had running around Loc Ness in the middle of the night drinking and enjoying carefree times.

  • So damn cool. Look at 'em... they're babies

  • Reminds me of the very early The Church vids, like Bel Air etc.

  • great - what is THAT guitar?

  • One of the BEST bands of all time!

  • i like peanuts, bowie and the chameleons but i don't like peanutbutter....

  • I like peanuts, butter, Bowie and The Chameleons, but I don't like peanut butter.

  • los padres de interpol..

  • @normanren

De acuerdo ! Yo siempre e opinado que suenan muy parecido. Se nota claramente la influencia.

  • @normanren What a great comment! Journalists always write about Joy Division as their inspiration, when it's clearly this.

  • @normanren Interpol habean muchas padres diferentes

  • I don't like peanuts but I like peanut butter. I don't like Bowie but I like The Chameleons.

  • Such a great song.. but I think Second Skin is even better.

  • superb- bleak n chilling. always used to get the urge to play this if I threw back the bedroom curtains and discovered a white snowy landscape- just to add to the mood!

  • who killed sgt pepper?

  • phil collins

  • gr8 SONG.....................

  • the song is about middleton and how much of a shit hole it is not just in the 70's but even today its a massive inspiration for music look at the courteeners now

  • @tom2253

I thought it was about the music business.

  • I also thought it's about the music industry....

  • @karziflora

Nope! Check out their website for more information. Tom2253 was correct, although while looking this up I have seen the music industry idea but MArk himself said about what Tom said.

  • Thanx for confirming that !!!

  • not middleton - heywood - monkeyland...

    still a shithole !

  • dear martin, your playing tonight was awesome!!! I wish I would played with a musician like you

  • The Chameleons are just INCREDIBLE. I hate them being compared with Interpol. Interpol is quite a nice band, but I prefer the original to the copy. Unfortunately I was born in the early 1980s, so I missed a lot, but I remember when I saw The Chameleons in 2001. Support acts were The Dresden Dolls and White Rose Transmission, which is especially interesting, for White Rose Transmission was the latest (and last, RIP) project of Adrian Borland (The Sound).

  • Yeah they shouldn't even be compared to them considering they came first haha. I don't think there has been any other band like them. They're like the very dreampop shoegaze band that was intense.

  • i wana kno more bands like this...

  • Check out The Sound. It's not the same, but definitely a personal recommendation.

  • Spot on!

  • recuerdo que en 1984 fui a la tieda de discos y me lleve el primero de los smiths y el de los chameleons,es una banda de esas que por mucho que pase el tiempo sus temas quedan siempre, magnificos.

  • The Chameleons are definately in my

top five bands of all time. Along with

Joy Division, The Cure, The The, and

Bauhaus. Wish the music was near as

good today as it was then. It seems it had

more meaning and substance in those days.

  • yeah

i am not a big fan of the killers but they surprised me with that cover

  • Hace pocos días que conozco a este grupo y he de reconocer que son buenisimos, por cierto los he conocido a través de uno de los mejores grupos de la historia como son los SOUND de Adran Borland.

  • Extremely talented...all of them....Burgess, Fielding, Smithies and Lever...Manchester's hidden talent!

  • great song legendary group

  • Adorable and EverEverEverEverEvergreen!

  • this band never sold out to the music industry vampires----this song is about the music industry---listen to the lyrics

  • Why werent these guys as huge as lesser talent? This song is about the music industry guys---listen to the lyrics---they never sold out

  • great performance from a great band! thanks for posting this video..

  • Thank you so much for posting this 8-)

  • The Chameleons have always been one of my favorite bands and SCRIPT OF THE BRIDGE is my favorite album of all time. I'm in California. I never understood why this band wasn't huge. I push this band on everyone who loves music.

  • Just got that album on your recommendation. Now another Californian has it!

  • @zakkum67 same here!!! one concert (at least) would be nice!

  • @zakkum67 They perform last year at the echo were you there? it was a good show and I met mr burgess and he said he'll be touring soon with chameleons material.

  • All four albums are amazing - why does the world not know about this band - there is a strong following in the US though

  • i adore this song, saw them at the international manchester amazing!!! 1985? BIT OF A BLUR

  • martind1000- thanks for posting this tune ..one of there best ... but they have so many good tunes

  • I'm 100% convinced that Interpol is in actuality, The Chameleons. The similarities are so amazing, it's criminal.

Though The Chameleons have much better lyricism.

  • I was thinking the same thing. This sounds like it should be on "Turn on the Bright Lights". You're right. The more you listen, the more creepy it becomes.

  • lovely video this of the lads. thanks
